NY chicken lover!!!!

When the day comes and we build our next home, I have plans to have a barn built along with it! THEN I can hatch out more because I'll have the space for it. I can't imagine what I'd do with 25 chicks if I had that many hatch out and I couldn't sell them. But yea if I had the space, then I'd be all for hatching that many at a time.

lol I don't know what I would do ether but I can normally sell them fairly easy. I only sell easter eggers so I sell them for like 2-3 dollars each after a week or two I post buy 5 get 1 free. So far I sell them all after that. But I also have aback up there are a few people I can give them away if I have to.....

How dark is the roadway? If it is pretty darn dark, put on your flashers around those areas....people out at that hour are very afraid of flashing lights (Might be a cop, might be drunk) Others are almost asleep so the flashing gets their attention from a long way off.

It's dark, the lights come on and off. I always have my flashers on since I don't have a light up top. Some people still honk at me and flash their high beams at me (like that is oh so productive to helping me if I really needed assistance as they drive by at 65-75 miles an hour on route 31!) I've had some people stop their cars and try to play 20 questions with me. "Who are you?! What are you doing at our mailboxes at 1am?!" (as I point to the car full of newspapers). My favorite morning was when I drunk man insisted that I hit his car when I came across the road to the next side road I deliver to. He slammed on his breaks and got out screaming at me. I drove away and called the cops.

When I have my own place with a barn and I can move my horse home I'll be so happy. I hate having to drive 35-45 minutes to see him whenever I want to go out there. I should be able to stick my head out the window, throw some treats down and watch him chow down!

What types of other animals do you plan on having once you move to this farm and are settled?
Ducks, they like to bathe! A dog to protect the chickens, maybe a horse. The goal isn't to raise and sell animals, it's to raise animals to be able to cook and sell the cooked food. One cow for milk, but idk, cows terrify me, they're huge and scary. I can't imagine trying to help a cow give birth to a calf. I got close to an Alpaca once and was shaking in my shoes! They are scary big animals too. I was praying the whole time that it didn't bite me. We planned to start slow, see how it goes with a chicken first and move forward from there. So far, we really love the chickens! We're new to this whole farming thing. We tend to be more of indoor people. Any advice is great. I read all those replys about dirt. Looks like our Dyson's will be working overtime!

Well trying to learn how to crochet and so far I don't think I'm doing it right. I can make a straight line like no other but let me try and link it back and build another row and eh not so good. So if anyone needs straight lines let me know im your guy lol.

Quote: Hi, I hope my post didn't upset you...I tried to be funny, sometimes it doesn't work. I hope it works out for you. You can advertise that your food comes from the cleanest animals in New York..no joke!

You would think ducks are clean, I mean they are swimming in the water, grooming themselves all day, but if you could see the amount of wet stinky poop that comes out of them, Oh my....I am having my first experience with waterfowl, and the part of the name "fowl" should be spelled "foul". Talk about lotsa poop. I also have Sebastapol geese. Even bigger poops..I now understand why they say don't let your animals swim in streams & ponds. They pollute the water so fast. Also, a new wrinkle is that if you have a stream that runs through your property, onto others properties, they say you cannot let your animals in it because it will pollute your neighbors stream. Makes sense.
I'm glad I won't be tempted to let mine loose, although I don't have a stream "on" my property, my northern boundary is a stream that is quite large so I have to fence it off. Although wild ducks and cranes use it.

Yes ducks, even tho I prefer them over chickens, are definitely more messy when kept "indoors". And by indoors I mean their house/coop of course. That water that they will "bathe" in, will also be pooped in! Mine are outdoors all day every day. The only time they go in their coop is at night and it can become quite messy within 2-3 days. I am all for keeping animals somewhat clean but there is only so much you can without driving yourself crazy is all I'm trying to say. These types of animals should be let outside, they will love it and they will look forward to it every single day. And if they become dirty, owell. They'll clean themselves up. My silkies have amazed me with how messy they've gotten at times and how nice they look the next day. Let a silkie out into the rain and you'll REALLY be amazed at how nice they look the next day.

Your post didn't offend me! I love the input/advice. I'm happy that you cleared up the stream regulations. We do not want to pollute! We do have a separate pond though, it's independent of the stream, but would check into this further because we don't want to make messy's for our neighbors!
We aren't planning to have a lot of animals, enough chickens to make eggs to cook and make something sellable, maybe quiche? Growing some trees. It would be so nice to have flowers for sale, and plants too, maybe extra eggs. We are permitted to have a farm store. We were thinking that perhaps we could round up other folks with items for sale, canned goods, and have them available at the store. Just a thought.

I've seen some really neat ideas on YouTube for DIY duck ponds that people have used, they are easy to clean and they recycle the water by using it to water their grass, gardens, etc. Ducks don't need a huge pond, one of those pond liners would work, especially one of the ones with the drain plug at the bottom. You empty it out refill every couple of days, they'll love it.

Speaking of ponds for ducks, I'm tempted to purchase one of those pond liners or one of those huge 350gallon Rubbermaid tubs for the ducks. Someone actually has one for sale in one of the FB groups I joined for only $150. My pond that I started is slowly dwindling away. The more the ducks splash in there the more the mud from the sides sinks in. The rocks and pavers I placed along the front are sinking and I'm already moved the pavers back away from the edge once to keep them from sliding/falling in and landing either in the pond or on a duck while it's in there. I'm thinking this spring, if I can just dig that out a little wider I can buy one of those pond liners and just place it in the pit that's already there and fill in the empty spots with the dirt and rocks after it's dried up underneath.
