NY chicken lover!!!!

Hey fyre--good luck with your mri. You'll be okay.

Nice to see everyone is hatching out silkies!!! I do believe, after listening to some strangulated noises coming from my brooder box the last few days, that my Mumbles is not a queen but a king!!! It dawned on me yesterday that what I was hearing was an attempt to crow! Oh--just heard it again! No matter, he is very sweet and will still be spoiled. I suspect that at least 2 of the babies are boys as well. Guess I will have to either trade them for girls or get them some girls! He sounds so funny. He is black. If I cross him with the bbs girls I have, what color will the babies be?? Of course, this wont be for some time yet as they are babies.

Another dreary day. Put down grass seed yesterday so my big girls are confined until the grass actually grows and gets established. Sigh. I see a whole lot of stinkeye and complaining in my future.

Hehehehehehe --- Nothing quite like the sound of a teenage silkie learning to crow!

If he's black, then mating him blue will give you all blue & black, with splash all blue(really nicely colored blues) with black, all black. At our house, we run all 3 colors of both sexes together. The dominant cockbird is Rafiki -- he's blue, Oscar is next on the chain of command -- he's splash & then Chicken-monster (hahahahahaha) who is black.

Hmmm...could it be a possible paint? Take a pic...I'd love to see it!

I was trying to make paint, but thought the experiment had failed so I moved the girls back to their own coop.
I'm flabbergasted! And giddy!! I have 2 Hat Trick Paints -- I took one out & Noah took out the little odd white chick. Noah said, "Cool! You made Paint, Mommy!"

I tried to take pics but need to do it in natural lighting... flash isn't showing this like it should. I have splash chicks ---- they soooooo don't look like this!!! I noticed a cluster of black feathers on the top of it's head. Then another little bunch on its back & wing. My splash don't look splash till they're older either. Guess those girls are moving back in with the whites!

Trish -- you'd better look closely at the light silkie babies you got from me!!!

Well ----- It look like a Really good Splash!!! Hahahahahaha! I went over it feather by feather & found a grey one.

Oh, well! At least I can sell the light colored chicks -- I was afraid I was going to have to grow them all out!

And this is a fine example of why you shouldn't look at baby chicks after taking a pain pill!!!

You all have the best names for your chickens!

Gandalf sounds perfect for that one guy!

Yucky here to today and last night, thunder and lightning during the early early am and then around 0800 again. Dripping and sopping wet - the chicken pens and the duck pen look abominable - they are so wet they are getting "chicken smelly". Was working on cleaning up the ground some this past Monday but of course it started to rain and so that was that! Everyone is fed and happy though but I had crowng and quacking to go around for a hundred birds!

I have to put grass seed down in some areas and the seed I put down last week the BRs got - they have taken to following me and my husband around again and MAN they have decided that the back yard is now becoming their domain also - used to be that they knew they had to stay out of the back yard due to the dogs. The other day 8 of them were in the backyard (which has a six foot fence around it - very pretty and hand built by my hubby) I had just put grass seed all around and the greedy little things were sucking it up. Needless to say I let Loki my last older St Bernard out - they all saw each other....she kind of sauntered off the porch...one Roos JP (the big bopper) ran to the fence and squeezed himself between the fence boards - not an easy thing to do since he is so big. Then Loki trotted over to where the one set of girls were - hysterical!

if chickens had human faces you can imagine what they looked like. Loki trotted after a couple of them and they went through the fence.....on the other side of the yard were three hens left....one went through the fence post haste....by this time Loki was ignoring the rest...I had to get her attention - so she sauntered over with her ears pricked up as much as they can like "hey! my yard - get your own....move along" the other two hens muttered and strolled through the fence.

to me it was pretty dang funny! No fowl came to harm in the interaction which was great. However, it didn't cure chickens in the backyard! Looked out two nights ago and this one hen that follows us like a puppy at our feet was at the foot of the porch stairs thinking about coming up.

Babies are doing great!

Meagan: I think Thursday afternoon will work - let me double check though! I had the same thing with some of the others (it's Pat!) we had gotten - they were GORGEOUS and a couple I swore were girls finally started crowing and fighting with the other Roos - I am sorry to say that I couldn't keep them all and had to cut it down to one of the gorgeous Copper and Black ones.

Now the BRxEE are looking pretty great! No one has laid yet and one of the black ones is now named Vader - told Hubby that I think it is a girl also but he/she gets picked on unbelievable! The one that was a dark grey color is now laying and has turned a very pretty "pencilled?" look on her upper body. The other one who was a pale color has turned a gorgeous lavender with some grayish and almost a creamy color has started in on some of the upper feathers. We believe she has started laying and MAN she is mean now!

So what is a top hat silkie? Send pictures everyone - I'm loving it!

Begged out on the MRI today, rescheduled for Monday when the husband can be there.

Renee: All I can say is Yay Yay Yay! This is going to be so much fun! Thank you everyone on here (Trish, Renee, Meagan, Hensey, Happy, Cydney83, Rancher, Madsenaccord and anyone I forgot which is sure to be a ton) for feeding my chicken fever and helping to enable me and teach me so much! You guys keep me sane!!!!

Cold in the house today and two of my incubators fluctuated in temp
he.gif
down to about 97 degrees on one and 94 on the hatching one - I do hate the styrofoam bators!

What I sometimes do is lay a blanket or towel over the top of the incubator and see If I can bring things back up. Plus the placement of you incubator is important. No high traffic areas with people going by to cause a breeze. Find a room that has an even temp.

OK HERE'S THE SILKIES AND FRIEND.

the first two are the porcelain, the second two are the blue, the third two are of the unknown, and the last is the blue orpington. all pics appear lighter than they really are and the third looks more grayish.

Good morning Rancher!

I have one of them in an alcoved area where it stays pretty constant the other two are in the dining area with minimal traffic but one is close to an outer wall - that may be the problem.....will that mess up the eggs I have in lockdown since they got that low for probably about 2 hours? Have towels on the two now to help with temp -I noticed it also seems to help with the humidity staying up.

The BRs in the lockdown incubator are now on day day 25 - I have them in a partial egg carton at a slight angle with of course little point down - no peeping but they all look good - should I give them a couple more days? Our BRs that have hatched before have always been BIG hatchlings - don't want to disturb them too much.

I canceled my Murray McMurray order just a few moments ago

just in case I do end up with Shoulder Surgery not to mention all the eggs waiting to hatch and the ones I'm getting from Renee I will be dizzy with babies!

I will probably order the babies end of June since the last date to ship the "Rarest of the Rares" is July 11th for them.

I need to get some of these babies grown anyway for sure!
