NY chicken lover!!!!

Your stove is lovely. We have no heat in our kitchen addition (20 x 30 space, and chilly) something like this would work well here I think. Someday. Our next door neighbor has one. I thought I was losing my mind one night seeing "fireflies" in the middle of winter. It was small embers coming out the pipe from the stove (well away from the house, pipe sticks WAY out).

I am getting really excited about the idea of getting chickens from Natureberry. I think my mom would come out here and watch Lily (our daughter) and Scott and I could go on a chicken date some weekend

She is too little to really care about chick selection and going anywhere alone as a couple is a huge treat for us.

I understand completely how big of a treat alone time with the hubby is. I have 3 young girls (5,4,and 5 months). Enjoy it when you get the opportunity!

Hi guys, we live 45 min east of Buffalo, and 45 minutes west of Rochester. Our "town" is so tiny I never mention it by name on line (we have a young daughter) I haven't read the whole thread but I am seeing alot of local people in the posts I have read. Very cool!
Just thought I would say HI

Forgot to mention I got my pellet stove in and finished installing it yesterday. Man this thing cranks the heat but I don't have it in the best location to heat the whole downstairs. The layout of my house is "U" shaped with my kitchen off the bottom of corner of the U. My living room is in one tip and my sons room in the other well the stove is in the living room roasting 85ish in here on low. By kitchen it's only 70 and my sons room is cooler. This summer we will move it to the bottom of the U part of house and have angled to go all areas just didn't want to order more pipe to do it this year with this cold snap we have now.

Heres a picture of the beast. Not pretty i think it's more of a basement/workspace type of one but it works good and thats all i care about. Used about 2 bags so far i think. cheaper than propane so far.

There are corner fans...little things that move a lot of air that you can mount in the corner of a doorframe. That's how I moved air from my wood stove room to the room I slept in in the past. (Now I just sleep in the cold. brrrr)

JLaw, your stove looks great!

My egg count is all over the place. Sunday 6, Monday 4, Tuesday 6,
Wed. 7, yesterday 2, and I thought they were giving up on laying, and it would be winter forever. But, Today 7 again, and part of a frozen one on the poop board. Maybe Spring will come. Of course, there are 14 who could lay eggs if they wanted. I wouldn't have enough pockets...just imagining it.

Wow, Welcome to ALL the Newbies! Have you guys been hanging out another thread?!?

Glad you found us over here on the NY Thread, glad to have you!

Well you can tell Spring is around the corner. Little critters are starting to venture out from every direction! Soooo many little tracks in the snow that I've never seen before. And in odd spots too. No direction to them whatsoever. Weird. I'm still waiting for DH to take care of that nasty rat out front and reset the new traps. I want to put two out front in front of the three holes dug out there. There are two sets of tracks, one that comes around the front ad up to the shed in the back yard and the others go from the house to the woods in the front/side of the yard. All the tracks look like this...

I'm beginning to think that maybe they aren't rat tracks tho...The spacing is about a foot apart. I don't see rat "leaping" to get to where it has to go. A mouse maybe, but a big fat rat? So I'm thinking either mouse or chipmunk? What do you guys think???

Hey coop I just thought of this. How friendly are your birds? You say a lot of people let them get into trees and they come from Africa so use to hiding and moving. So I was thinking maybe they see you as the threat and are trying to get away from you. Every time you go out there you could be inforcing that thought into them as you circle the tree. I know my rooster aint too friendly and if my kids circle the flock he goes after them but if they just walk through he leaves them alone, I think its because he sees them as stalking when they circle the flock. Just something to think about.

I agree. And it's a fine line between too scared to jump and too scared of the human. I leave them be as much as possible but I walk by their visual range when going to the coop. I shake their spinach bag and softly call to them :)
