NY chicken lover!!!!

I'm waiting patiently for another egg from my lavender silkie today, doesn't look like I'm getting one unless she too decides to lay one over night. I want to get out there soon after they lay so they're not all duds due to the cold. I just hate to throw them in the incubator and have them all not develop because of the cold temp when I could have stuck them in the fridge and used them for eating. THATS what I hate most about hatching and having none develop. Maybe I'll do a small hatch of only like 5 eggs. I'll start them in my LG and then when others hatch and are removed I'll transfer the new 5 into the Brinsea. We'll see.

JWEBB ~ That's a lot of eggs!!! I'm curious about the Bantam Chocolate Orpingtons because I have seen them listed for sale on here before. Are they as small as a bantam cochin do you know? I didn't even know there were such things as "Bantam" Orpingtons until end of last year. IF I ever do decide to part with the trio of Orps I have and stick to bantams, I would like to get bantam orpingtons IF I could find them in the same colors I already have which are the Lavender, Splash and Blue.

Speaking of Orpingtons, The woman I got my Lavender Orpington hen from runs a 4-H group (I believe) and her daughters are in it. Anyway, they are having a Chick Sale Fundraiser and I came across her ad on CL this morning.,.,

If anyone is interested in purchasing chicks to help the Country Homesteader's 4H Group you can email her here: [email protected]
Looks like the chicks will be available on April 12th.

Yes they are little like the banty cochins... and so cute omg with fluffy little butts.... in love. I hope some hatch I only got four eggs. we'll try it! I did google last week and found lots of bantam orpingtons. Like their big counterparts they can be pricey and I didnt get any. then I saw the eggs and decided to try that, if it doesnt work out I am not out too much.

Update on the missing Guineas...
Out of the 4 that flew the coop, 3 have returned. Two said "enough is enough" and walked right into the run. The last one was spotted today by a friend as we were leaving the house. He was in the middle of the stream on the ice...pretty sad shape. I had to walk through the snow, down to the creek.

He just sat there, so I broke the ice and walked right in (brrrrrrrr) and picked him up. Poor guy...so run down. I walked him up to the coop and offered him all sorts of food and water. He is now separate from the crowd and recovering. I am still concerned he may not make it, but he is looking good with no obvious marks or cuts

I did a far and wide recon of the surrounding area and not a feather, nor any tracks could be found of the last missing one. Of course the only one left is all white

At this point, it does not look good for the last one, but I will keep looking

I hope he makes it. Can you use a dropper and get some warm sugar water down him? Maybe the other will still show up. crossing my paws.

Well that's good to know I ever do get completely out of the Large Fowl and just stick to Bantams. Although, this year will really be the test to show me they're egg laying ability. Last summer was awful! LOL

Stopped at Cortland TSC tonight: mixed bantams (looked like 3 toed, clean leg silkies), golden comet pullets, tetra tint pullets, production red straight run, Rouen ducks.
Asked manager Jen when their shipments come in: seems to be random so far this year, this batch was new today. Prior years was every Monday morning. If I had the brooder box clean and ready, would have brought home some pullets for hubby's production chicks. There's always tomorrow ;)

I stopped at my TSC yesterday and they only had Cornish cross chicks. Thankfully the chick I left with was stuffed for my nephew. He wants chickens really bad (I'm a bad influence his mom likes,to tell me :D ) but he needs to wait till his coop is cleaned out & secure run is built. So that won't be till at least June lol

It also helps that I have a limit of the number of hens I can have according to the Town. I live thru you guys when you hatch out chicks :D

He ate fresh spinach, carrots, brocc, rice, squash and regular feed with corn

He is now hiding in my long nesting box...poor thing

I hope so too!

Funny to books never mention this type of stuff it's always, "Oh they're so lovely and friendly, easy to care for, no trouble at all and you get lots of fresh eggs every day".

Horse manure! There's nothing easy about losing a bird.

Speaking of which , I'm up three Dels and one EE. So far not one Birchen Marans even though there are quite a few pips.

I hope these Dels are girls cuz I found one on the floor of the coop this afternoon. No idea what was wrong. Her crop was empty and I didn't notice anything this morning.

I'm surprised you have a limit. What is it?

It's horrible! I keep thinking there is one out there, now alone to brave the night...not knowing if it is on the ground starving to death, or has already been taken in the night

Everyone else is cozy in the coop and he is out there wondering where everyone is

The one I found today has tucked himself away in a nesting box and did not want to come out and the others are perched and crying out...perhaps letting the other one know where they are, I don't know, but I didn't try to quiet them just in case they really do have a connection.
