NY chicken lover!!!!

I've had it happen before with roosters, especially brahmas. The males feather in much much slower.

Might just bee a real slow grower. looks almost like the runt of the litter. I've bought a few that took awhile to feather out namely my barred rocks. Also my rooster ee is taking longer than my 3 hens did not sure if it's the barring or just wanted to take his time. Should be fine just make sure has plenty of food feathers take a lot of protein to make.

Look at those smart little stinkers on the roost already.. love that lil one on the end just hangin out.

Now to other news.

Lost a chick last night.  Got up cuz the furnace is acting up and found the little guy at deaths door. It didn't make it.

Now the furnace is by Charles Heating and only just over a year but past the warranty.  Of course!   I told the girl on the phone I was not happy that I never get reminders of service, nor did I remember getting a notice that my service agreement was up.   She says I did and I honestly don't remember. Still the furnace is just over a year old.

The old one was much older and It would quit every winter when it got cold so we had a new one put in.  Fat lot of good that did.  This one is working but was making a funny noise and I think the blower or whatever wasn't pushing the heat up.

Ducklings are doing okay but more work since they're so messy.  Not sure I made the right decision.
Rancher, I TOLD YOU THE DUCKS WERE MESSY. AND THE OLDER THEY GET
MORE AND MORE MESSY. I had Call Ducks for 10 years and did NOT enjoy the MESS and more MESS. The Chickens are so much easier. Regards, Aria

question. has anyone had a chick that barely had any feathers at 3 weeks? We did our first hatch ever and there is one that kind of concerns me. when it hatched its eyes kept getting crusted over so every few hours I had to clean them with a Q-Tip so it could find the food and water. now its eyes seem fine just no feathers. Any one have ideas? Here is a pic I took today.

They are lovely youngsters. Hope your little feather-challenged one catches up. It seems healthy enough appearing otherwise!

News from the hen house:

My Brabanter, Gertie, has finally started laying! The only white egg out of all the girls, and surprisingly not all that small. She lost her mohawk. Not sure why, she seems OK otherwise. I'm wondering if one of the other hens ripped it out. I've been mingling the 2 flocks together a lot more. Anyway, she looks like Friar Tuck.

As mentioned, the original flock of 4 and the younger additions of 3 are now mingling more peacefully. Still a few altercations, but (knock on wood) nothing too dramatic or serious! I'm hoping to get that darned cage out of the coop once and for all. Maybe this weekend. It'll make my life a lot simpler, unless they start to really beat on one another.

Enjoy the sunshine and the temporary warm-up. I hear middle to end of next week is going to be frigid again. Please, don't shoot the messenger! We can thank Canada for their freezing cold air! Having to "Vaseline up" 7 chickens is not something I want to keep in my nightly routine! (Boy, that doesn't sound good!!) LOL!

It took me all week, but here they are my chicks that hatched last weekend. And my one and only frizzle NN OE started laying this week. Her egg is the one on the left, center is an adult OE, and right is an adult BLRW egg. Hope I didn't miss anything but I can't go through 204 posts.

Yes, I have had that happen to a couple of my own egg's hatchlings. Sorry to say, neither of them survived to an age to lay an egg. One died at about 4 weeks and one at 9 weeks. No reason, just not enough feathers and POP, dead. I suspect, since they both hatched from the same color egg that something genetic was going on with that hen/roo combo.....I don't have the hen anymore, so I shouldn't have that problem this hatching season.

Seriously it gets so wet here I can build them a long hoop with an open top run and they'll be in heaven every time it rains. I'll need about 5 or 6 cattle panels for it though. I'm sure in the end it will be okay. If not I just eat 'em.

I hatched out 27 out of thirty and that's a record for me. Lost one of the Ee's though. Don't know why. I'll be hatching again just not too soon. Got 5 Blue Swedish Ducklings too.
