NY chicken lover!!!!

morning everyone ..another rainy day here in Lakewood..i guess it beats all the snow ..the grounds starting to thaw atleast ..lawn needs major help ..lol..i got a stack of pallets dropped off and i need to get building a new coop or just make the one i have now bigger ..so much work and so little space between the rain drops ..

one more day and my new babys will be here ..

i have 5 welsummers pullets and one cockral

10 columbean wyandotte

15 mixed cochin bantys ..

the cochins are for a friend ..but i was thinking of trading here for a couple girls to use as brooding moms but read that the Wyandotte tend to broode well ..what do you all think ..should i trade her to have the brooding hen or just depend on the Wyandotte to get the job done ..
No need for broodys if you have a broody wyandotte. I had a glw hen that went broody every spring/summer and Elanor would sit in the nesting box till an egg hatched. She was awsome.

Stony--I thought I had you with that one. Kinda reminded me of 60s music a little. I will ponder awhile for tomorrows word.

I checked the silkie eggs in the bator and they were all dead. One had quit and the other two Im not sure. Anyways, I cleaned it up and reloaded it with 20 more silkie eggs. Perhaps the larger quantity will allow for a better hatch. Candling the big bator tonight to see how many of the 40 eggs in there I have to pull. I have 15 heritage rir eggs in there and the rest are all mutt eggs. Life is about to get real busy around here! A little sunny and heavy south winds is drying out the ground and coops nicely. I released the terrorists this afternoon and they have been very busy re-landscaping my yard. Thats fine. Saves me the workload. Have to move rocks on thursday and start building my next raised bed. Lots of rocks here so I might as well make use of them.

My cat is telling me its her goodie time. I shall have to go now as she expects her treats. Spoiled diva.

sorry to hear about your hatch Pharm...I think I have a goner as well. Hasn't moved since yesterday when they went into lockdown.

the other one pipped but I think it's having trouble and I'm scared of helping it and screwing things up. It's the one egg from my Splash hen. Glad you have another large batch going in! Good luck!

Hey everybody. I have been on very very little lately and am over 60 pages behind on this thread. I've been doing a lot of horseback riding and what not. I've spent the past week cleaning coop, barns, water dishes/ bowls, and then all my saddles and other tack. But, here is a photo of the last ride I went on the other day. As far as spring hatching goes, I'm just now starting to save eggs to set as the cochins are slow at laying lately. :(

Ouch! That's weird! Was it left in the nest box a day or so and was possible missed and started developing? Do you have a broody that was laying on it?
Nope, all the eggs get collected same day and the one broody I have right now gets kicked off the nest nightly so I can grab eggs. I'm worried now that somebody I sell eggs to will come across one like that...

Lynzi and Pharm - Sorry about the hatch mishaps. Keep on trying, and Lynzi, I hope the others are OK and the one that pipped continues to make progress.

WELCOME TO ALL NEWBIES! Nice to have "flock" additions!

I have 2 Egg Questions:

1. My Lavender Orpington, "Chumley", has been laying some eggs that have what I assumed were calcium deposits on them (rough, raised and pebbly deposits the same color as the shell). But I've stopped putting calcium supplement in her feed over a week and half ago and these eggs are still coming (see picture). They are downright bizarre looking. Should I be concerned? Do something different? Or just don't worry about it... ? Since losing the sussex, I'm nervous for my girls. Thanks for your input!

2. 3 or 4 of my birds lay eggs pretty regularly with "meat spots." I know these are harmless for consumption, but they're gross. I pick them out with a grapefruit spoon, which works, but is a pain. Once again, is there anything I can do to alleviate this problem? This is not a new thing, by the way. The same few have always laid with the specks in the egg, from the get go. I've heard it's a hereditary thing, but don't know if that's fact or fiction. Thanks again!
