Hey there, I have a chick that is wounded last time in her head and at her lop left eye side. Although she is recovering and eating properly how could make her wound to dis appear :(

Yes I was, sorry, forgot all about using the quote button. Also i'm not worried about buying any there, its just having the gas money to get there. Its a little over an hour drive for me and my truck isn't the best on gas.
maybe someone lives near you ? you can ride with ?

Lynzi777- I'm so sorry about your ducks. The people down the road from us have ducks and everynow and then I actually will see one dead next to the road from someone hitting them. We live on a kinda busy road so when they go over to the other persons pond drivers dont care, I've had to hit my breaks a few times to avoid them but I also keep my eye out on them. Would it be a possability to maybe post Duck crossing signs? If people are knew to the road they may not know of them but it could help people to know to keep watch for them.

On another note, today was the first day in almost a week my chicks didn't wake me up from making lots of noise. They actually kept there food and water un-tipped over so they didn't make tons of noise. I'm kinda looking forward to when its nice so they can go outside.

It was dark too ! You can cover them with a sheet or blanket to keep light out & turn out the heat light.
Longs they are inside they will cuddle to sleep & be just fine . It gets them used to a natural cycle too .
By turning out the light at night ....they know when it is getting dark it is time to go to bed ..
I'll have to google it, they definitely get up there, about 10 feet up in the air at some points and fly across the whole yard. My KCs aren't heavy at all. They are same size as mallards if you ask me.
So sorry ...this is one of my greatest fears too .. aniimals getting hit by cars .
Signs might help .
My chickens have been trained ...I cough when I cars is coming ....( roo danger sound )
they look up for the danger ...most times they respond & run away from the road

Quick Question...do any of you keep silkies in with your regular-sized birds?  My neighbor had some silkies and I wanted to buy a couple from him and he didn't think they'd do well with my established flock.  He thought they'd probably pick on the silkies too much.  I am creating a smaller pen inside of my main coop...a grow-out pen, if you will.  I figured I could probably just keep the silkie in there (plus another one, as I wouldn't want it to be lonely), but that grow-out pen will be small and I'd prefer to keep all of the adults together in the main coop.

If you keep your silkies in with your regular flock, do you have problems with the larger chickens picking on their feathers?

I'm so behind on my reading but wanted to comment on this. I used to keep my Silkies and larger birds together with no troubles. I only separated them when I acquired a rooster. He was more than 3x their size and I'm sure was hurting them, so the separation. (Knock on wood) I've never had problems with feather picking between them.

Why do Birds .... sounds like you are pretty much a city person who wants to learn to be a country squire - and that is cool. There is so much I did out-right wrong with my first horse ... just because I didn't know. I for sure don't want you to leave this thread as IF you listen and really think - you can come up with some great info. And this is a great place to pick up information ... I am a much MUCH better chicken owner due to the people on this thread! (thank you all)

Poodles, golden doodles are hypoallergenic and would make great pets that you can love on all day long ! Why don't you visit with someone who has one ? I have a golden doodle and you are welcome to come here - see my chickens and love on my doodle ....

BUT as Pyxis spoke up about the chickens - I HAVE to speak up about the large guardian dog issues ..... ALL and I do mean ALL people I have ever run into who had to put their dogs to DEATH - started off with the attitude you are showing to your chickens ... and calling their poo " a messy " is really indicative of where you are mentally - you are city with a certain outlook toward life. You will NOT be able to rehome a LGD when it starts to maul you, push you around and rip up your arm. You will have to kill it. They can't transfer their focus like other dogs, and you will have set some deep patterns within it that no farm is going to risk the time to train out. Any LGD that you get will be doomed to death. You have to be able to evaluate yourself. Trust me - I had two dogs with high wolf content - I know from strong and powerful dogs.

Just ask Pyxis - we were discussing a donkey - I said my personality will not mesh with one; much as I want one and tried it out for a few months .... my personality will not mesh with raising kids unless I was able to have a full time nanny - so I like kids, I babysit and even mentor - but I don't have any of my own. Ask Bakin how good I am with her kiddos - and how we get along - but that is for visits - not full time.

So what I am trying to point out is ... much as you may love farms and farmers and the farming life ... you are not made out to deal with some wilder sides of most animals. So what you need to do is live in the country - but chose what you visit and what you own very carefully.

Personally - I would never rip you up or put you down as a person, the world needs all kinds and is better for it - but I could not have a person as a friend who used the term "a messy" because for me - that is too passive aggressive, too wavering on self-delusion, too wishy washy - and I gravitate toward hardly honest people.

Please do a serious self evaluation and set up your new farm so that you can visit things you love but do not have the temperament to be a caretaker for - and then DO surround yourself on your own farm with what you can husband with aplumb ! Please. And I really do extend the offer to come out to my place for a nice afternoon and walk and talk and sit and sip and you can just soak up my set up and see how it strikes you.

I do remember you lived here while he opened the Troy Dino...right after you said it, of course.  :lau   His store is in Rensselaer County.  That info will help you search online for places.  Averill Park would not be a bad commute for your hubby...schools are good at the elementary level (don't know about upper grades).  Center Brunswick is just up Hoosick Street about 6 miles...Tamerack schools are wonderful....small town feel, large area finances.   You should be able to find some place to rent.  I did a quick search and found several in Rensselaer county.  One *I* wanted to rent...LOL....but it was too big for the two of us.   Your best bet is NORTH of Troy for farm land and decent commute.  North Greenbush is a good area too.  WONDERFUL schools.

Ohhh yea, I remember East Greenbush, that might be an option. I'm going to do some looking around today just to see if there are any houses for rent in a country like setting. I just fear that even IF there are...what are the chances those landlords will allow chickens.
:-(

Can we please stop focusing on Why not? She has made her position clear, she wants to do things her way. She loves her birds and thinks that this can work for her family. She is kind and gentle. Many, most of us see serious problems with her views on animals, but she will not change what she does because she does not see a problem. We are all here for her if she wants to change anything, but if we continue to try to convince her she will shut us all out. Please, let us move on.

If it is scabbed I would keep her separate from other chickens until it falls off.
If you have/get "blue kote" you could use that to discourage pecking from other chicks if you cannot separate her.
My favorite treatment for open wounds is "vetericyn" a topical gel that heals wounds very quickly!
Good luck :)

Nutty - the reason he keeps getting shuffled around is because this company is growing so fast and each time it expands they shuffle people around to train/help out in other areas. Then they take their best managers and move them up as well. He's one of the very few people who has advanced this quickly in this company, he's always looking for opportunity a to advance to get to where he wants to be. The next open will be Chicago and they just signed 3 other cities as well.

Oh I understood why they move him just was wondering if their was any certain set length of time between moves. I guess it is like being in the military but it still must suck moving all the time I would hate it .
Any baby bunnies yet?
