Rubbermaid tubs. A few of them. Good for stoage in the winter when not in use-dual purpose.
I have a tub, and I will use it for a short time....but it will not hold them IN very long...the 4 may wind up back in there cuz they are the smallest in number. Silkies are 5. Next group is either 7 or 4 itty bitties and 5 all the same size...which may be 5 or 6 weeks old. Hmm...6 weeks old can go outside right?
I made our first two brooders myself.
Yeah... me with no carpentry skills!
I bought the largest storage tubs that came in clear. cut the center section out of the top, drilled the corners & centers on the long sides then used nuts & bolts to attach hardware cloth to the tops.
The brooder lamps sit on top & get raised as the chicks get bigger.
Of course hubby had to out-do me with his amazing "chick-a-vision" brooder.
It's just shy of 3x5. Plexiglass doors on one end & solid plexi panel on the other, wood sides, vinyl floor & 2 removable hardware clothtops. He's such an over-achiever! THEN he built a small brooder that fits perfectly on one half of the big one... just to show off I think!
I also have three 3x3 wooden crates that I got dirt cheap. Nice ones. He built tops to fit them too. For the youngest chicks that move out to the garage brooder complex, I stapled the new silver bubblewrap insulation to work as a heat reflector.
