this is what you made me think off. :lau
Lol!

Hello all you fellow NY chicken lovers! I'm new to having chicks and learning a lot here. I'm between Rochester and Syracuse in Ontario county. I've been looking for a couple of blue or lavender orp pullets to add to my peeps. If anyone is close and has any, let me know please. Have a great holiday weekend all and enjoy the sunshine! Finally!

Evening all. Came home to see my silkies still out and the brats/monsters also out. They are having a wonderful time running around. Of course the terrorists beaks are out of joint because the upstarts are out and they arent. Bill must have gotten startled because when I opened the top on the crock pot hot tub to say hi he was so relaxed that he just fell apart. So we ate him. He was good. Gave his legbones to his children to pick at. They loved that too. In the end, he provided for his children.

Going outside now for chicken therapy. Need it after work today. Later!

Plum tree took nice, will be planting it at the farm tomorrow. We had hail here yesterday but I had the plum on the porch and it was well protected from the weather! Went to a relatives and got several apple trees, not sure what kind, he says he has red, yellow, and greens ones and he has no idea what kind of apples these little trees will be. He needed to mow and had several and was nice enough to give me the ones he didn't want in lawn. Those will hopefully go in tomorrow too. I put each "clump" of apple trees into bags in buckets and added about 1 liter of water to hydrate the roots overnight. I'm hoping that some of them take.

All's well with the chickens, they are happy in the back hall. Fredo goes outside to play with my son. It gives me a chance to clean out the droppings, and replace the bedding every few days!
Been so busy lately, cleaning the barn and trying to get everything ready at the farm for when we move there. Still not building yet.

Hopefully soon!

DD and I spent fun in the sun time with the chickens this afternoon. Here is a picture of the make-shift chicken tractor. It is really meant for the meaties. We covered half with tarp in case it rains or they just want shade and get out of any kind of wind.

all meat birds (red broilers) at 4 weeks old.

broilers with mixed in egg layers girls =) enjoying the freedom (but scared like crazy of DD. Well at 2.5 she more scares all the chicks although she means well.

A cautionary tale for those who are tempted to love their chickens a wee bit too much and/or are having problems with egg production:

Every Friday a client gives me all the bread from her "meals on wheels"....she doesn't eat bread being diabetic. Every Friday the chickens greet me at the car door looking for bread, which I happily throw out on the lawn for them to peck at til their lil' hearts are content. Every Friday I collect 6 - 8 eggs.

Every Saturday I collect 2.

Every Sunday I collect 4.

Every Monday - Friday I collect 6 - 8.

Ya think maybe, just maybe, the breeds of chickens I have are put off laying when they have too many carbs?

Very interesting Cass. You may be on to something. I guess you should go a few weeks without feeding them the bread so you can find out for sure. My chickens get "snacks" once in a blue moon around here. But when they do get bread I'll have to see how their egg production is the next few days.
