NY chicken lover!!!!

I ended up going to the show but didn't buy anything. To new at this to start going crazy adding birds, but my wife really wants ducks next. She liked the runners (great egg birds from what I've read) and also some of the geese. Was hoping to see some full sized Silver laced Wyandottes so I know what to expect, but only saw Bantams. Wife also really likes the looks of the barred rocks, and she was impressed with a really big white rock roo.

Quick question, can i feed 1 week old chicks strawberries or fresh corn? Wife is dying to give them treats already.

I'm sorry to those of you that I've missed saying hello to. You will enjoy this thread. I'm sorry to say that I'm someone that doesn't feed many treats. My dogs get dog food, cats get cat food, chickens get chicken food. I'm the one likes treats But others do and will share I'm sure.

I agree with the statement to build big or not at all We just got through putting on our 2nd addition to the original coop.

Things are so dry here that I've watered the dirt in the garden tonight with the sprinkler and tomorrow I'll plant seeds/plants. The ground is nothing but fine dust.

I give mine treats that young. But I'm only a year into this whole gig and am FAR from an expert.

Yeah...lol.

We just added a grow-out pen today, and are finishing a section of the chicken coop that we had previously been using for storage of chicken supplies and food, etc.

It will house our young pullets and cockerels until they are large enough to integrate with the flock. Then, it will be our bantam section. My silver sebright hen and silkie hen will live in there full-time. And if, indeed, the blue silkie chick I have is a cockerel, as I suspect, he'll probably hang out with them, too.

I'll bite,

I'm not one to feed little ones treats. Chicks are babies and still growing. I keep mine on Grower only. Perhaps some electrolytes if their outside. I like to keep them on Medicated for the rate of a 50# bad then on non medicated if I want. Is there a special reason for wanting to give 1 week old treats?

Wyantdottes are a nice bird for our winters. Most rose or pea combed birds were developed for that reason alone.

Welcome to the addiction floydp97! Build big or dont build at all!

Jlaw--I feel your pain. I have been checking the terrorists and havent found anything until today! Mites. Grrr. So I am off to bribe them into the coop then treat them with eprinex and poultry dust. Already took care of the silkies and they are mite free. This weather hasnt helped any and neither are all the wild birds that are around. I am going to war.

Tab---I want that recipe Rancher was talking about. Sounds real good!

Sally--Im being careful. Resting it then doing a little something then resting it. Arnica gel seem to be helping as well.

So beautiful out. Going back out to get some more vitamin d. And trick and treat the terrorists.
It's only my roo so far that I can find lice on. Before it was all the ladies but I think he spread it because it was only those who laid eggs. But now even those are ok but he is just covered. I hate it because it keeps his muffs and beard from growing in. They go after the soft feathers first.

I think we wait until about a 3-4 weks old. Even then it is peeled seedless grapes and we make them tear them apart to try and keep them from choking on them.

I wouldn't do fresh corn for awhile I'd be worried about the lining on the corn not breaking down enough and getting stuck in crop or building up somewhere. Strawberries I would treat as the grapes about a month old or older. Some people ship chicks that are past the 3 day mark with oranges to keep them hydrated and some vitamins. I have no experience with that and you would want to look it up before giving the chicks any.

I also agree with the statement to build big or not at all we started with one small coop then built another bigger coop, then a big barn, and now I am having another big barn built.

Didn't make it to the show today had a ton of stuff to do around here. I love my new goats they are so social actually will probably be getting 3 more on Tuesday. I can't wait until they are old enough to be bred and give me milk I plan on making cheese and soap with it. My baby chicks are getting so big they are starting to fly out of the brooder tote so time to put the wire top on. I have to replant some of my peppers tomorrow as some didn't make it otherwise my garden is doing great. Suppose to rain and T-Storm on Tuesday so figure better get the garden finished up while I can.

We made it to the show just after noon yesterday. The girls picked two boys and their sister to latch on to and run around with. I'm glad they were good sports about it, my girls are very energetic. After the show DH helped me to plant my main garden. He did the tilling and hoeing while I planted. I just need to plant the little beds I have around. The black flies were awful last night. I could feel them just running into me while I was finishing up the garden.
