NY chicken lover!!!!

Give her some eggs from the 'bator?  Maybe 2.  Chickens can't count....then you can stuff all the chicks under her when they hatch and you won't have brooder dust all over the place.

I got one more chick today and it isn't thriving. Going to give them till tomorrow night then start candling or try water testing them. I moved the broody again tonight, this time putting her in the nest box from outside rather than inside the coop and made sure she was pressed down on the golf balls before letting go. If she sticks in there, I'll give her some chicks. The chicks hatched 1 Friday night, 6 Saturday. Do you think they would still take to the broody Monday night? She is a first timer and only solid broody since Thursday.

Hello everybody! I'm pretty new here, live just outside of Ithaca in Newfield. I have a question for you NY folks- I'm thinking about building a hoop coop out of cattle panels that will have one solid, wooden wall on the wind side with the rest covered by a tarp/plastic. Will that get my birds through a brutal winter like the last one or should I build a solid wooden one instead?

Thanks :D

Welcome! I recognize the last name, work with Bob when he comes in FSA. Nice guys. :) I have a hoop, but park it inside my horse barn. Rancher and others have hoop coops outside year round. As long as it is ventilated but not drafty, and keeps them dry they will be fine. The hoops can get hot in the sun though, so keep that consideration in mind too.

Worked on the duck pond yesterday. Dug out a lot more. The ducks were in it a lot today. It filled in last night after we got yet another rain storm. Just trying to work out the details with DH as how to fix it better. We are trying to figure out how we want to finish it. I keep changing my mind what I want to do with it. Not sure if it is going to stay there or put one somewhere else. I hate that the last few years I keep second guessing myself and can't decide what I'm going to do with anything.
I found a kiddie pool at Aldis for 8.00 for the ducks ...it is a little flimsy but if we sink it in the ground it will be just fine .
Also the sides are too high for the ducks to get in yet

Is there a time you can talk ? Ask him I would like your advise on something ?

Morning all. I cleaned out coops and played musical chickens this weekend. Found nasty crept crawlies and eggs on a bunch of them so they all got treated. Some of them are the kiddos 4H show birds. Any suggestions on non chemical solutions to the crawlies, I'd like to stay away from DE if possible. I'm also looking for tips on regrowing the feathers I plucked that we're covered in eggs. Our fair is in 6 weeks

DE isnt a chemical it is
Diatomaceous earth /ˌdaɪ.ətəˌmeɪʃəs ˈɜrθ/, also known as D.E., diatomite, or kieselgur/kieselguhr, is a naturally occurring, soft, siliceous sedimentary rock that is easily crumbled into a fine white to off-white powder. It has a particle size ranging from less than 3 micrometres to more than 1 millimetre, but typically 10 to 200 micrometres. Depending on the granularity, this powder can have an abrasive feel, similar to pumice powder, and has a low density as a result of its high porosity. The typical chemical composition of oven-dried diatomaceous earth is 80 to 90% silica, with 2 to 4% alumina (attributed mostly to clay minerals) and 0.5 to 2% iron oxide.[1]
Diatomaceous earth consists of fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of hard-shelled algae. It is used as a filtration aid, mild abrasive in products including toothpaste, mechanical insecticide, absorbent for liquids, matting agent for coatings, reinforcing filler in plastics and rubber, anti-block in plastic films, porous support for chemical catalysts, cat litter, activator in blood clotting studies, a stabilizing component of dynamite, and a thermal insulator.

Pictures of the babies I hatched from Chickenstock:

They weren't too thrilled with the flash from the camera. I'm happy with 22/34. Every one was fertile and started to develop. Had a few early quitters, some late quitters, one died during hatch and one was so deformed I had to cull. A pretty good hatch considering the power outage and high humidity during the incubation. Had just one sticky chick that got a total immersion bath so it wouldn't stick to the wire and everyone else did well, even the couple I had to help a little bit.
Cuties All ! whats the one on the right doing ?
It looks up in the air ..LOL

Welcome! This is a great thread. I haven't tried a hoop coop bc I have way too much wind, but they sound like they work well for some. I live just east of Watkins Glen, so not far from Newfield. What type of birds do u have?

Another busy weekend down. Fiona's birthday party was today. Travis borrowed a bounce house from his friend. The kids had a blast. Nora started crawling this week. She can really motor when she sets her mind to it.
Our hatch from stock was due on Friday and it was a failure. One chick hatched (one of crazy4chicks's eggs), none of the moderns from ladylibra hatched. The only thing I can think happened is the temperature changes because the weather has had some drastic changes lately.

Rancher-- Chemo and radiation are not a picnic, but one round and then monitoring aren't so bad over all. Good luck! Hopefully it won't be too bad for her.
Tab you are in for some big trouble now that Nora is mobile LOL!

Welcome it a great place!

I have numerous silkies who were broody hatch out a bunch of chicks so have baby chicks running all over their area and they are driving their mommas nuts as they are chasing them all over it is quite comical to watch.

Sadly neither one of the bull calves made it the Holstein passed away this morning, I hope the law does something to him my vet was so mad this morning that he was calling to make sure they do something. Now I miss the little guys so time to find some more calves.

Going in the morning to pick berries ought to be fun in the 85 degree weather. Plan on making some Jam. Am off until Wednesday so got lots to do .

Nutty --- I'm sad to hear about the calves. Some people are rotten in their behavior and view towards animals. I feel they deserve our respect and care. Especially when our food comes from them. I still have to squeeze berry picking into my schedule. The girls will not be happy with me if I don't make home made jam for them.

edited to add: Welcome to the new chicken lovers!

You aren't far from me at all, we go there for dinner often. As for chickens, I have a little bit of everything including a 3 month old white silkie roo I don't want to keep - in case anyone is interested.
