NY chicken lover!!!!

Remember that silkie chick I posted a pic of a few weeks ago, asking what color he/she might be? Well now that she's feathered out some, I'd like some second opinions, lol!!!

Well any doubt about culling my SS roo is now gone! I went out a little bit ago to do my evening pre check just to see where everyone was and when I was in the chicken run the ******* came at me again. I was lucky that he only just gave me a little scratch. In the past he has only came after me when I had my rain boots on. If I was in my flip flops he left me alone...until tonight!

. I went and got the rake and caught him. I had him hanging and was just getting my supplies together when DS asked me what I was doing. She was very upset and begged me not to do it. So he got a stay of execution for the night... I had to have a talk to her about the difference between our pets and our farm animals. I tried to explain that our farm animals will come and go, but our pets are here to stay till death. I told her that their silkies are pets so they will be staying, but Mommy's chickens are farm animals and they will come and go. Some will find new homes when we sell them or give them away and others like Captain will be culled and we will have a nice chicken dinner. She was reminding me that he doesn't bother them and I had to tell her that yes he is only going after mommy right now, but it is only a matter of time before he comes after her or her brother maybe when they are playing in the sandbox not paying attention to him. She made me pinky promise that I would try to find him a new home first. I explained that there are a lot of roosters in the world and no one wants a rooster that is getting mean, but that I would ask anyway...

So here I go....

Does any one want a large speckled rooster.

6 out of 7 chicks hatched today, the 7th didn't make it. It was actually breach in the shell. Legs were down by the little to nothing left of the air cell. I got nervous and tried to help by pipping a hole in the air cell end and that's when I found feet instead of a beak! I lost it.
:-( so I have 6. 3 blues and 3 splash. The blues will most likely be up for a grabs but I'm probably going to hang I to them for a little just because one seems so light, so if it's a light blue I'd like to keep it.

Set 7 Silkie eggs in the other bator today! Fingers crossed they're fertile and something hatches!

It does help to know what some of the possibilities are.  DW is a diabetic, has had heart surgery in the past (age 42) and high blood pressure so they're monitoring lots of stuff.  She did okay yesterday with her first Chemo.

BTW, what is Chemo ?  What's in the drugs and what is in the Radiation?  anyone?

Rancher, they use different drugs for different cancers. my mother, at 78, just went through chemo, 3 different drugs for 6 mo. She took her anti nausea s med before each chemo day and never suffered with it once. She's in remission now for 9 months. (Hodgkin's Lymphoma) My Dad had radiation 40 yrs ago and I can't really comment as I'm sure it's changed drastically by now and anything i would say would be so outdated. He was never sick either. Prayers to your DW.

Waiting for this next rain storm. Everything was updated to severe. Everything's closed up tight. Last night I got soaked through my rain coat. I just knew that after this winter that we'd be in for a stormy summer. Dogs are even ready, very agitated.

No thanks. I already ate my equivelent of your "large speckled rooster" and he was Yuuuummy.

Nutty --- I'm sad to hear about the calves. Some people are rotten in their behavior and view towards animals. I feel they deserve our respect and care. Especially when our food comes from them. I still have to squeeze berry picking into my schedule. The girls will not be happy with me if I don't make home made jam for them.

edited to add: Welcome to the new chicken lovers!

My vet turned him in so hopefully something gets done by the law. Of course now I have to find a couple more calves. As far as berries I ended picking 51lbs. in less than 2 hours have half zliced and frozen and theother half will be made into jam and pie filling.

I recommend keeping two roosters at all times of breeds you want to hatch from. Wish I did and lost both my BR's and my Dels. Now I keep one older guy and one younger guy. Won't get rid of the older guy til there is a new kid coming up.

I've got two B. Marans, two Del, and two for the EE's. One EE and one Araucana. I'm not sure about the BR's but expect to have Roos for the CR's.

Nutty how are those chicks doing?
Rancher they are growing good I never lost any of them they had some good lively chicks.

Wood ash. When mine had creepy crawlies I dusted them every night in wood ash for 5 days then a week later. Everything was gone. I also leave a dusting pan out with wood ash and some peat miss mixed in. I was lax about refilling it for a few weeks & they ended up with mites so I will never do that again lol

I use wood ash and about once every 2 weeks I sprinkle the dusting powder in with the ash and dirt keeps them all cooty free.

So to more serious stuff of the day.

I was watching the news of the Twin Tornadoes and it broke my heart. Folks dealing with houses being completely destroyed and here I sit worried to let my chickens out due to a Fox. What a boob I'm being over something so minor.

I'm sure they'd trade places in a heart beat. Especially the family that lost their 5 year old.

Lord have mercy,

Have a nice day folks and hug someone you love or not today,

I agree when I start to sweat the small stuff I think about the fact that their is always someone out there in a worse situation and to just appreciate what I have.

Ok did my berry picking got 51 lbs of Strawberries should be done with them tomorrow and soon it will be Blackberry and raspberry picking time I know my bushes all have at least green berries on them and some are getting close to be red now if I can keep the chickens out of them long enough to pick them.

I have all sorts of new little chicks hatch that were under my broody silkies the crazy little things are running all over the place it is comical to watch them.

Good thing I decided to let my nurse job talk me into working this summer when I wasn't teaching as sons college is going to cost me $10,000 for the next year. Told him he better remember that when I am old and need someone to support me.

Thankfully someone up above was watching out for the hubby tonight as a young girl going to fast lost control of her car hit him head on and then bounced off of him and put her car in a ditch and the worst part was he drove his corvette so it was really damaged but thankfully no one was seriously injured hubby is sore but will see how he feels in the morning and the girl ended up with a busted lip. Her mother was upset about her insurance and the fact that they are going to have to pay to repair a corvette and my reply is well be glad she didn't get hurt and maybe next time she gets behind the wheel she will drive the speed limit.
I told him he was so lucky he wasn't driving my corvette or I might have had to of hurt him LOL!

so, when is the best time to cull a young rooster? 5 out of 6 of the chicks we got this spring are roos, maybe 14 weeks old, so when will these roos be in the best shape for butchering? looking forward to eating fresh chicken, i just didnt want to butcher them too early...
