NY chicken lover!!!!

I need advice on what rooster I should order. I'm getting a mixed flock ( 15 ) blue laced wyandotte, buff Orpington, speckled Sussex and Dominique hens. I know I will probably get a male out of my order but feel I should order a male. What will be the best kind???

If you were going to get a rooster out of the breeds you are ordering from I would choose the Orpington. I have a Cochin rooster in my laying hen flock and I love him but I have had Orpingtons and thay weren't to bad either. It just happens to be that cochins are the type of chickens that fit me best. If I was going to get any rooster though it would either be a Cochin or Orpington.
My Cochin rooster that heads my free range hens- Bruce

Thank you . I think a buff Orpington rooster will be good. I love how big and puffy looking they are:)

The other thing I would consider is do you plan on raising babies ? Did you want purebreeds ? or all mixed ups .
If you got a Orp Roo you would have some babies that would be all Orp ...if you got a different color orp you might get some splash ones maybe ?
I would look at pics of the Roos that match the hens you have & then decide .
Buff Roos look pretty plain ...in case you want one that is more eye candy

I would order no roosters. There are plenty of folks who have extras for free. Like ME!

Now too, you'll want to get a rooster of the breed you'd like more of. What I see missing from your "mixed flock" is Easter Eggers. If this is your first group you'll regret not having colored eggs. Any off these breeds you've got crossed to an Ameraucana or Aruacana or perhaps an EE will yield chicks that if a pullet will lay color eggs.

I had a couple of hatcher Dominiques and they made great broody moms.

Mutt chickens can be very pretty and good layers too.

I wish you well,

That is what I was thinking also.... Hhmmm this is hard my husband wants just one breed but you know chickens are addicting:) the main reason we are getting them is eggs/meet we have a little homestead and you never know when having chickens can save your life

Pictures of my Light Brahma "not" feathering in..

Any advice? Shes pretty bald under her wings too.. 6/7 weeks olds. Seems other wise healthy, shes a little bit smaller than the rest, but makes up with attitude..

What are you feeding her and is she with other birds. Older ? Younger? Is she with a rooster? I say put her on a high protein diet. I prefer Dumor 20% chick starter or you could go with Dumor 24% .

I wish you well,

Heres Chippie & Baby ..I let them out of their cage today ....so the are in the coop run now

Heres the little fort ...I made for the chickens out of scrap logs trees bark .
They almost never use it ..when it rains or for protection .They decided to use it their own way ...

I really like it. Very cool. Mine need something similar for shade. They go in the woods cuz it's cooler there. I bet your birds are very happy.

I did have Silkie for a year, hatched out some babies and then my sister caught "the fever" so I ended up giving her my whole flock of 14. Now Silkie are cute but (sorry Silkie lovers) they're just not "chickens" that grandma had. I am leaning toward mostly Orpington in my flock. I like mutt chickens so I don't mind if we get some unusual looking chicks:)
