NY chicken lover!!!!

Many people are in the same boat. I'm English and when people say what are you doing in NY, I simply say that I can afford to live here! Despite taxes, cost of living etc. the US is currently much cheaper than the UK to live in.
My SIL's parents moved here years ago when his father retired from the Bobbie force. His mother is a nurse with fibro---- and needed the warmth of California.

My Dd met him on e-harmony and they've been married a few years. He transported over here when his company crashed and burned.

Now his brother has transported here too. He's in NYC.

I can't believe it's 6pm already! This day FLEW by! Went and got some shopping done at the mall this morning, lots of sales on clothes for the kids, had to take advantage of that since I have no idea what is going on in August! Hopefully we'll be living in a house I like. We're leaving again for CT tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed we find something. We have a couple of showings in CT and some in MA. I just want to be able to come home and start packing knowing our stuff is going to another house and not storage! :fl

Silkies/Sizzles got moved to ke5hde's house last night. That was actually lot easier than I thought it was going to be. Makes me feel good about moving it to the next house. I thought that coop was going to be a nightmare to move! My friend came over with her trailer and we were able to get it on there within 15 mins. All I have left here is Stella, Ella and Gru and the kids' ducks. I need to find a home for the ducks and Gru. I'll list them soon on CL I guess.

My 4 last bunnies will be coming with us, one of them had babies a couple of weeks ago and they wont be ready for new homes until late August. So I have no choice but to keep them all with us.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Lynzi I wished I lived closer to you, I'd love to hold on to that splash eng roo for you :(

I wish you luck finding homes. Did you post on the rehoming page here?

Well I don't deal with folks who use four letter words. Shows they have an attitude I don't chose to deal with. That said a Raccoon will make short work of that coop in short order.

That said it's an nice way to recycle a swing set. With some modifications it would be good.
I totally agree with you about the coop. I saw this on CL a while ago and my first thought is...that chicken wire isn't going to stop much. It looks cute, but doesn't look safe enough. They are also asking for 6-8 hens..I'm not sure I would put that many in there with out free rangeing them, but that is just me.

hey rancher, i know you make alot of jellies and jams, do you make strawberry freezer jam? if so does it turn pink when you freeze it? just curious as thats what just happened to mine. i thawed one out and it turned red again, tasted great. just wondering if everyones does this

My mom made freezer jam all the time and it did that too

Morning all. Nice cool start to the day. Everyone is loving this cooler weather. All the little silkies have figured out the ramp thing except for one. Had to rescue him/her and put em inside. Silly baby. Swapped shifts with a girl at work so I dont have to close tonight. Winning! Does mean coop cleaning when I get home but thats ok. Working all weekend so I wont have any other time to do it.

Lynzi--glad to hear things are moving along for you. I hope you find a house soon so you can pack with knowing where your stuff is going. Good luck finding homes for everyone. Very kind of Ke5shd to take your birds for you.

Rancher--any word on DW leg?

Featherpicking wellies--there is a thread somewhere on byc about featherpicking. Some chickens do it no matter what. I have a couple who do it and Ive tried everything. I have a few hens who are bare butts and Bill, my former rooser, looked horrible because they picked him so. Said hens are done laying I think and so will processed as soon as the pullets start laying. Hopefully no one else starts. Havent seen any of that behavior in anyone else.

Enjoy this beautiful day everyone!

Ugh I know, I moved here from Canada because it was cheaper and there were actually jobs down here (it's impossible to get a job in Ottawa without being bilingual). It's amazing how high the cost of living can be in other places compared to here!

I really do like the idea of recycling the swingset however I do agree with you that a raccoon (or really any predator for that matter) will make very short work of that coop. Any hens that go in there don't stand a chance...

I haven't lived here long enough to really see how "pricey" things can be but when we moved to NY from CT people made comments about how it would be more expensive. Yea sure there are towns that are more costly to live in than others however this is the cheapest place we've ever lived. The houses up the road that are going for $250-$300k would easily cost $450k back in my hometown! I'm gonna miss living here for sure! Not looking forward to this move.
