NY chicken lover!!!!

My silkies are so stupid they FALL OFF THE ROOST.

I put them back on THREE times and they fell off all three times. I left. I just couldn't hold in my laughter any more and I didn't want to wake the sleeping hens. I don't mean jump, I mean they FELL OFF. It's a 2x4 with the 4" side what they stand on. Of SHOULD stand on. Of course they are the dumbest birds I have ever seen in my life. One got stuck trying to get up the ramp. It watched 4 other birds walk up the ramp and still couldn't figure out how to get up on the ramp, kept jumping up on the side of the ramp, toward the top of the ramp, but wings got stuck under the ramp. Like I said, Stupid. As soon as I figure out which are roos and which aren't, I am going to be giving away a couple of dumb as rocks roos. I may have to pay people to take these birds. I mean they are DUMB.

Cass, what color are they? Mine are all white and I would like to get a different colored roo and make sure there is some genetic diversity. I can't tell yet what mine are, they are only about 5 weeks old.

Hey Horse--I have some blue silkies and I am pretty sure at least 3 are boys. They are 2 1/2 months old right now. Let me know if you are interested. I live near Kingston. Mine are still learning to go up the ramp. They come down all right but I have to herd each one up the ramp every night. Its getting old fast. I have 11 right now but will be looking for homes for the boys (except for maybe two of them). The 5 that are in the brooder I am not sure yet as to sex. My blues I am pretty sure but you know the saying...until it crows or lays its anyones guess.

Very interested, Madsen. They are close enough in age that it would work out nicely. You are only 1 1/2 to 2 hours away and it would be a fun trip. Keep me posted on who crows and we can work something out when you are ready. If my big coop isn't done I will put something together to keep them in for a while.

Go with Madsen's Horsekeeper. Mine are all white also.

I would take one of your blue roos Madsen...maybe trade ya a white one? But I don't want to breed my silkies...they are just too dumb to reproduce. I mean really, FALL OFF THE ROOST???

I believe that to be true. But why do they prefer to sleep in a pile on the floor? My theory is they are too dumb to figure out how to stand on the roost.

Hahahaha! Could be.

I also had silkies from 'show quality' byc eggs, so mine were EXTRA floofy. Just giant poofballs. had one almost starve before I figured out it couldn't see the food and gave it a trim and a hairclip. So I don't think they could even SEE the roost unless I put it about an inch from the floor. Plus of course, they can't really fly (or mine couldn't).

Mine don't roost on traditional roosts either. Hubby made them little "roosts" out of 2x6's & they do like them. Maybe they're afraid of heights because their vision is impared.

Most of my silkies sleep in a pile. They're not the brightest crayons in the box, but they're some of the prettiest!

horsekeeper -- I'm curious -- why would you not want to breed your white silkies to other whites. White covers other colors & patterns & when bred to blue, you're going to "release" the hidden genes. If you intend to eventually sell the eggs or chicks this makes them much less desirable & less valuable. Are they from a breeder?
