NY chicken lover!!!!

Lynzi,
What has been going on? I haven't been on lately n missed a ton.

Hey Miquwid!!
Well I ended up having to move due to DH's job situation. He got a new one based out of RI but will be stationed in Wellesley, MA. We found a house in Woodstock, CT but it's in a lake community and does not allow any kind of livestock or poultry to be raised on the lot. So I've been touch with some people in the area that would allow me to raise them on their property (just my Silkie/Sizzle flock) but I am waiting until school starts next week to meet with these people. I have wayy too much to worry about right now with getting the kids ready for school in time (the 25th they start!) and getting physicals done, I had to go to the DMV today, that was a nightmare! All this just so these kids can go to this school! Ugh The birds are in good hands now with Ke5hde so I don't have to worry about them which is good and helps a lot with everything I have going on right now. I actually contacted the realtor we worked with who got us this house and asked if she knew of anyone in Woodstock with land or a yard they'd be willing to rent/lease to me so I can get my birds down here. She lives right down the road from us and said there were two people off this road with a ton of acreage that might be willing to lease me an acre. Not that I even need that much but it's nice I have options. We plan to buy a house next year and will stay in this town so we won't have to move kids' schools again. So for now I'm just keeping my fingers crossed everything falls into place.

So I am wondering about brood lamp/heat... My chicks are 3 weeks old and are feathering out nicely I have the lamp on all day and night ( turn off for about 1/2 hour during the day) it stays between 75°-80°. It is staying about 75° in my house during the day do I need the brood light on during the day? And at night it drops down to about 65°-70° but wouldn't they be confused with the light only on at night?

We used a red heat light and kept the light on at night for the first month.

After the first month, I gave them a shaded area so they could hide from the light if they wanted to catch some sleep, or come into the light if they needed some warmth. That worked well for us.

I made sure that the temperature under the light was as follows:
1st week 95
2nd week 90
3rd week 85
4th week 80
5th week 75
6th week 70

By the 7th week they were going outside for short periods of time
By the 8th week they were ready to go into the coop (it was beginning of June and pretty warm out).

They are now almost 19 weeks old. I have their coop wired to a timer so that they get light:
from 5:30am to 6:30am (I usually let them out around 5:45am anyway)
from 7:30pm to 10pm (They usually come in on their own around 7:45pm and I close them up at 8:00pm)
The rest of the time they have a very low wattage blue glow night light (in case someone falls off the roost) like this one: http://www.amazon.com/AmerTac-71282...ubst_hi_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=04N2Y3Y66VW5WQ67H2YS

I am expecting those eggs any day!

Lap-- Do you know of anyone with surplus pickling cukes? I don't have many and I need to feed my girlies pickle addiction.

I wondered if other chickens loved cukes like mine do. They go crazy over them.

Made 32 pints of bread and butter pickles. I had a few leftover pickles left and along with tomatoe skins and other veggie leftovers from making sauce and stewed tomatoes the girls crops are BULGING tonight. I'm afraid they might be crop heavy & tip off the roost tonight. I think the babies crops are bigger than them

For the winter I found 100 watt bulbs at Dollar Tree. (Heavy duty...only way 100 watt can be sold in USA any more) But I am delighted they are the heavy duty cuz I find those last longer when used for heat in the coop or over the brooder. I usually switch to the 100 watt bulb 100% of the time at age4 weeks. Helps with the power bill....those 250watt bulbs draw a LOT of power

morning everyone ..i introduced my 2 flocks to each other yesterday ..it went pretty good i think so far ..the roo went after a couple of the older girls and they stood their ground..they were intermingling by the end of the day ..i still have the 2 coops and wont open it completely up till the end of the week..i went to close them up for the nite and found one of the older girls in with the new ones on the roost..i put her in with the older girls because i was afraid if i wasnt there when first light hit she may get attacked by the roo..hes still running the new girls away from the older ones but i think hes starting to catch on that theres more ladys ..he really think hes "THE MAN"..lol

This can happen when they realize the "order" has been changed.

I've been moving Shorty and Cottonball to a half hoop with three younger chicks. Shorty gets attacked each morning by Godzilla and poor Cottnball is so picked on, I'm tempted to just give her away.

I don't know why she gets picked on. She's nearly bald.

In other news. I had a EE hen sitting on one lone egg for what seemed like forever. Last evening I found it had a still born chick in it. Can't say what happened. It was a maran egg.

Well rain in the forecast and miles to go before I sleep. Have a good day.

Rancher, I hope I get it all done, Hicks.

I would stll turn the light on a bit during the day ..like a couple of hours before sunset . Then turn it off at night & cover it with a blanket or sheet .
It will keep warm in there & they will cuddle & they should all be warm enough . Also they will get used to sleeping at night time too .
