Nice to see you & Danielle again ..And Tab & Travis & the Girls ...the baby is getting so bigg....cute as a button .
Met Some New to me people today also ...
Had a good time ...but it was freezing cold ...So gratful for the food stand next door that had HOT Coffee .
all the Doors were open in the poultry building like it was 90 degrees outside ..BBRRRrrr

It was definitely chilly. Had a good time yesterday and we did well in the show. 3 firsts, 1 best variety and 1 reserve variety. Good to see you guys yesterday.

Sorry I haven't been on much - went and got my cat irradiated for his thyroid, had to replace a bunch of high $$ crap at the house (septic, well, furnace - ouch!)..

The hawks have been brutal here this year - they got my tiny little hen from CB the other day and within 10 minutes of my deciding to give them a little 'out' time they almost got my little araucana BB. She ran for the electric fence and and got stuck. I was able to free her and lock everyone else up under netting, and that's where they stay except for maybe an hour before roosting when I'm out there. /sigh. The hawks were just perched all around our yard, as bold as can be. Seems like they are worse on cloudy days, oddly enough.

Ugh there was a HUGE redtail hawk yesterday afternoon perched on a tree branch just looking down at the chickens. I spent the rest of the afternoon doing work outside and supervising...Ugh stressful. The chickens were all hiding under a bush but there are always the one or two that stray away when they see something interesting.

Has anyone bought chickens from a breeder/hatchery in Saugerties, NY? He has Salmon Favorelles and Cochin pullets available for $15 & $20 and I was thinking of getting maybe 5 or 6 to add to my flock. Everyone's super healthy and getting along fine in my flock, so I'm a little hesitant to pull the trigger, even though it's only a 30 minute drive from me. Hoping to use this gentleman in the future since he's within driving distance--would LOVE not to have to ship the little chicks in the spring!

What kind of cochins are you looking for? LF or bantam and what color. We raise exhibition bantams in a few different varieties.

That's tomorrow isn't it?
didn't go, went to church instead even though iv'e got this cold that won't go away. Not a real bad cold but just annoying. I only shook hands with people I don't like.

DW has been complaining she's cold all the time, which for her is unusual. She's lost of a lot of weight. Had the thermostat at 71* Lord have mercy!! I'm surprised we didn't a "thank you" card from National Grid!

I'm sorry to have missed Tab and Travis. Should have brought my grandson to see the girls. Of course the princess would have liked being with other girls too.

Forgot to close up the side coop last night and found the chickens out this AM.

They were all okay, thank the Lord.

What am I going to do with Robbie? Robbie is the name I've given to a young roo? who, I'd left in a box on the bench. Forgot to send him with all the others sold to Ed and Crystal.

What has happened with Robbie is I put him in with Big Delores and her gang, but he is younger and never really took. Meaning get up on the roost with them. It's getting cold so cuddling up is good. Anyhow I picked up Robbie and cuddled him and carried him around a bit and now he follows me, letting me pick him up and pet him. He/she's and EE. I just can't keep anymore. As it is I'm hanging onto four which may be all roos cuz they're Buckwheat and Frenchy's kids. I have no idea where I'll put them when they move to the coop.

I'd also like to send out a prayer request for my SIL and DD. They've issues that need to be worked out. Also pray he gets lots of work. (he does construction) They've been a big help to u$ in our tragical situation. I thank the Lord for them a hundred times. I've hired him in the past and he is a great worker.

Well I'm going back to rest.

I am so not ready for the cold weather. We got a flurry yesterday. BRRRRR. I hate the cold. Just got out the rest of the winter clothes. Realized that I need to buy new winter boots this year. Been working on trying to get outside ready for winter. Trying to figure out where I'm moving things around. Need to move the coops closer together so that they are better protected from the wind and so it is easier to shovel the run. Last year placement made it hard to clean out the duck hut. I was hoping to have the ducks in their own Hoop coop for winter, but don't think that is going to happen this year...unless we win the lotto

So my last hatch is all over. We only had one duckling hatch. The cochin eggs never developed, one of the maran eggs was about a week then quit, the other was good last night, but this morning it was pushed out and ice cold. I brought it in and warmed it up, but it didn't make it. So with only one egg hatched I had to say sorry to one of my broody mamma's and kicked her out. I left the duckling with my silkie, Chleo. She is a great mom so the duckling stands the best chance with her. Hopefully MJ will get over it soon unless I can find any other chicks to give to her. Got a better picture of our little duckling. Just in love with it, just wish that it wasn't crested, but oh well. I'll take the crest as long as it is a little girl..If it ends up being a drake it will have to go.

Will have to try to hatch out some more next year...more chickens and more ducks.

I need to get on here and vent now that I'm on the computer and can type faster. Let me just start by saying that when I say "I miss NY and all the friends I've made up there" I don't think you really understand just how much I really miss NY and all of you folks.

I don't know if I'm just having bad luck, I'm doing something wrong, or what...but I swear, chicken people in New England (or at least the few I've contacted that are in CT & MA) are no where NEAR as friendly as those in NY. I have met some really stuck up, rude, and just flat out unfriendly people since moving here and it's really starting to discourage me from doing anything more (like showing) with chickens. A friend (A new friend I met here in CT thru chickens who is actually NORMAL!) and I went to the Little Rhody Poultry Show yesterday and my gosh, you would think some of those people were being held there against their will! Could care less to answer your questions, it would be shocking if they even gave you the time of day. One woman that I've been going back and forth thru emails with has been giving me the run around for weeks now - weeks! Just to basically tell me that her birds are sold at shows and she will not set any aside for me. Even though I kept telling her over and over that I am interested in purchasing 2 birds from her and would meet her at ANY of the upcoming shows. She told me every show I wasn't going to and when I told her the two or three I was going to I find out she's there and could have cared less to tell me! WTH?!? I am reaching out to you in hopes to find some birds and you can't commit to ME? I've heard the purchaser not committing but the seller?!?! I don't get it. Then my friend and I find out that few ladies we questioned about having birds who just replied to us with "no" when we asked if they had any, DON'T want to sell birds at all. Ummmm OK. So why can't you respond with "I'm sorry I don't sell birds". Is that so difficult???

These people are so short with you, can care less to associate with you or any other people there for that matter. They stick to themselves like they are just on top of the world. I'm sorry but when I go to show I like to meet as many breeders as possible, especially those who might be able to help in the future if I'm ever looking for something. I love the information I gain by talking to them and I just plain like talking chickens! Isn't that what's fun about going to a show?? I just don't know what to do because I really wanted to show next year but I don't want to associate with these people at all nor would I ever want to be around them. Maybe I'll just hike it up to NY and attend those shows. Ugh - Rant over.

Meanwhile, my friend has found the birds she was looking for, and I am so happy for her. I put her in touch with one of my out of state friends I got birds from and she will be getting 2 shipped to her next week. She is so excited.

I am sorry for your experience. This is the exact experience I had when showing Cavies/guinea pigs and there are a few on BYC who are just like you've run into. I did have one friend but she got old and I think sick and sold or gave away all her stock. Then she passed away.

Fact is dear, they can't relate to other people. It's not you. They're everywhere, usually very clickish and drive many newbies to the show circuit away. Whether dogs, rabbits, chickens or kids they're just words I can't say.

What is it you're showing? I say just fill out your paperwork, bring your birds and ignore the snobs.

I don't show because they're usually on Sunday which doesn't work for me. Not to mention buying cages to carry birds and all the other stuff. I'm just to old.

Try to connect with some judges. Ignore their uppityness and press on. There are some here. I know a lady in Alabama who shows Silkies. I'll pm you her address. Perhaps she can sell you or me some eggs to hatch.

Love ya,

Rancher, to old to show, Hicks
