NY chicken lover!!!!

So I have been MIA again... It seems now that my littlest is walking it is so hard to get on the PC and catch up here!! I am almost 45 pages behind and don't have time to read up!

Hope everyone is well. We are in for a cold snap again. Temps dropping quickly this am. The bright side is I am getting eggs again finally!!

Rancher- The chickens I got from you last summer are finally laying (well the 3 that ended up hens) the rest were roos.

I think I may do an Easter hatch this year, scouting for some eggs maybe dual purpose breeds, that like the snow.

It was me and yes it is open but call store at 315-942-2976 before coming out as hours are mostly nights and weekends right now. I will post prices of all the feeds, waterers, feeders, incubators, and other chicken stuff tonight right now I have to get ready and go do the nurse job last night was the teaching job but am off the weekend.
Where is your store? Did you list prices somewhere? I am looking back through the thread but can't find it.

So I have a question. I'm rebuilding my free range/ laying hen flock. I like an assortment of colors in it and was wondering what anybody's recommendations would be. I'm planning on getting 6-8 hens so if you could get any 6-8 chickens of any breed what you choose. I like to have LF Cochins so I will probably have one of them for a rooster. I was thinking about have some Ameraucanas but what else should I get to have with them. I loved the Comets when I had them but the single color was kind of boring to me. So anybody who has an opinion on something that makes a good layer and looks good free ranging, I'd love to hear it.

Need some advice...What incubator should I get? I don't want to get to big of a one...no cabinet ones. Don't want to be given the option to hatch so many. I'd like to stay under $200 before shipping. Has to have an automatic egg turner! I like the little Brinsea, but I do like the idea of being able to hatch out a few more. Maybe 10-12?. Was looking a the some of the others that holds up to 30-40 like the Hova-bators. I know that I don't have to hatch out that many. I just like the option of being able to set a dozen.

For those of you that have tried different types which ones do you like the best and have the best results? Help me!
I have had good luck with the Hovabator-Genesis. Has digital temp & humidity readout. Comes pre set for correct temperature. no egg turner though. It was around $170 including shipping. I only use it to hatch goose eggs the last 3 days. I had an older model for 8 years that I still have as a backup. I think the turner is around $40 more.

Country Boy - a Lemon Cuckoo Marans would be lovely - colorful, dual purpose :)

Mutt hens come out better for just visual differences .... I like my olive eggers crosses .... very fun

Hi everyone. I'm Paula from Syracuse. I'm a big lurker, not so much a poster.

I saw Nutty's post about feed and since we have layers, and soon to be piglets I plan to make a run down their to stock up on 100lb bags of feed since it is so inexpensive!!!

I know there are a few other people in the greater Syracuse area. Would anyone want to order feed and I can pick up? If so we could work something out to help me cover the gas for the trip. You can message me if its easier. I have a pickup and trailer.

I don't advocate for the use of poisons. The risk of poisoning pets being my #1 concern, but also that of wild creatures eating the carrion of a poisoned animal and being poisoned themselves. I just can't feel good about that, but then I'm a nature nut. Death by poisoning is an incredibly painful way to go and all surrounding wildlife shouldn't run the risk of that fate. OK, now that's 2 more cents from TOB, totalling a hefty 4 cents, LOL.

Really nice set up!! I like it!!

TOB
The summer of the dead cats our neighbor said her cat was poisoned. Our cats had to be put down at certain time. Old boys. My DD's cat also old got hit by a car. Anyhow my neighbors cat died and the vet said poison.

As a rule I don't use poison for mices or other things. I'd fee bad if the chickens got some.

My research into poison, rat and mice is that other animals can eat them and get poisoned second hand. Things like Coyotes, foxes, birds of prey and of course cats. They've found traces of whatever is in Decon and the like in other wild animals. Rat/mice poison has a large dose of Cumadin or whatever it is called and the animals bleed to death.

Of course I've no love of Foxes and coyote, but folkses house cats I'd hate to poison.

Well that's good to know.

My C. Rocks have started laying.

I don't mind if folks tell me what's what with anything they get from me as it helps.

I'm getting ready to hatch again.

The Genesis is just about the cheapest or it was in better incubators. The newer ones are very nice I think. Incubator Warehouse was nice to deal with and I'd go back to them if I were buying another.

Well now you need to post more often, or you'll be forgotten.

What do you figure you'll charge for delivery? I'm in E. Syracuse as you can see. Per bag? Per trip?

Part of the reason I didn't drive to get feed is by the time I figured in my gas I was just as well off to buy it at TSC or CM>
