NY chicken lover!!!!

Speaking of feeding your chickens squash...I am highly allergic to wheat, barley and rye. Is there something I can grow or feed to buy that won't break the bank for my chickens that is healthy for me to be around???
Squash and pumpkins I can grow in abundance on a good year....sunflowers too.

Thanks
Chickens will eat almost anything that grows in the garden ...so you will need to fence them out ..
spinach , lettuce any greens beet top s ..broccoli top leaves etc strawberries tomatoes

Hello,
I've been busy trying to reading through this thread to get some information, but there are just too many pages! :p

Does anyone know who I could contact to purchase about 10 to 12 day old guinea keet in or around Saratoga County? I have been wanting to get a small flock started for years and finally have the space. I'd be happy to be put on a list.

I have searched my local Craig's List but couldn't find anything listed.

I appreciate any advice you have to offer.

Thank you!

Have you checked the Facebook Swap Sites? There's a pretty active one called "Sloansville Swap" or something like that and a few others. I'll check really quickly what they're called. You can put "ISO Guinea Keets" and I bet you would get a lot of responses!

Can hives be placed in some sort of lea? Perhaps an evergreen cove type of thing. I know which was the wind blows here so when I place the shelters for the chickens I place them so the block the snow.

The sun comes up at the front of this coops and the snow blows in from the same direction.

That would work well for them. They would enjoy the shelter in all seasons! They are fascinating creatures to watch - I sit and watch them for hours..in my next hive I'm thinking of building in a plexiglass window so I can see what goes on inside - that would be fascinating.

I almost picked up a bunch of silkies last year from TSC. We were going to Fla. for a week and the wife said they could wait. When we got back they were all gone and they didn't get any more.
TSC gets their bantams in a assortment, not hard to pick out the silkies with their extra toe and black skin.

What area are you in? They didn't have any here at ours in Oneida. However, they did have a pamphlet you could order from... .

Good morning fellow chickenistas! So we only got an inch of snow with maybe more coming today. Its windy and downright frigid this morning so it looks like a water hauling day. I am glad we didnt get the dumping they are getting elsewhere. I think Lindsey may be getting hit though. People are throwing our local weather guys under the bus for their forecasts. I say they should be grateful that we didnt get hammered. The weather guys said it could go either way. I elected to stay home today in case the power goes out so I can run the generator to keep heat in the house. Better to lose 5 hours of pay than having frozen pipes.

Everyone piled out this morning despite the cold and wind. I will have to refill feeders as well because they are eating more in this cold. I will have to give them some corn later to heat them up.

My neighbor is still home so she hasnt gone into labor yet! Its another boy so I can brainwash him into being a chicken lover as well! Big brother Timmy is already one and knows my chickens almost as well as I do.

Still working on this afghan. When I picked this pattern I didnt know it was going to take this long. Thankfully the next two I am doing are mile a minute ones so they should go quicker. I hope so anyways. Got some stuffed chicken patterns I want to make as well. Now that I think about it, work is really interfering with my crochet and chicken time! lol I have to work to support my habits!

I hope all of you are doing well. Lynzi--check in when you get a chance and let us know how you are doing.

Rancher--glad to hear dw is doing ok. She will be cold because of the radiation treatments. You could crochet her a shrug to wear that would keep her warm in the house. I made one for my mother and she likes it a lot. Even wears it in GA on those days is damp and cold.

Going to go finish my coffee now. Will check in later.

Delaware County. They had them in a bantam assortment. I can't remember what other breeds they had, I know they had one bin with pullets, they had ducks too. The only ones in a mixed up assortment was the bantams. At their Sidney store and Oneonta stores.

Guineas are seasonal layers. Probably none around until mid spring at the earliest.
