NY chicken lover!!!!

Winter can go away now...All I have been doing the last few days is moving snow, moving snow and moving more snow...

I agree I am sick of the white stuff and sick of freezing. As far as I am concerned their should be 4 days of snow one to put you in the Christmas mood and the mood to go get the tree, then Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and the day after Christmas that's enough. I wasn't born a penguin so I say enough of winter. LOL

I see young laying hens on Craigslist all the time for $10. Some buyers think it is high, but it takes more than $10 to raise a pullet to that size. I would think a less common breed should bring more.

Quite frankly I've paid more than that for chicks. Buyers who think it is too high are cheap and know nothing of raising chickens. Lazy people who want you to do all the work. Let them go to the hatcheries and pay shipping.

I sell older hens for $5. They're usually still laying but not as much as when they were younger. That's the thing with non hybrid birds, they lay for a longer period of time. Fewer eggs at a time but for a longer time. Seems to me if you're going to make a pet out of them, then you want a bird that will lay over the long haul.

This little girl started laying again last year. She'll turn 7 on the 21st of this month. I've a couple of her kids that I hatched.

I didn't have a lot of $ in the roos I butchered. I will not even think of how much I spent on feed before the pullets started laying. Some people have more expensive hobbies. The eggs are yummy though. I just spent $162 on twenty five straight run from SandHill, paid extra for the faster shipping. The wife's not happy. She's really not going to be happy when I take a road trip to Pyxis's to pick up a few more Lol:lol: No new guns for me this year, I probably won't get anything for my birthday either Lol!
Chickens can become a contagious disease I guess.
How are those coming along Pyxis? I have $ now. Thought about asking about quail after reading on here how fast they mature, but the wife will probably make me live in the coop Lol!

Heck ! if you come all the way to Pyxis - the 3 of us should meet for lunch or dinner someplace ! Maybe Bakin can even join us ... would love to meet you before chickenstock.

What kind did you get?

I want some huge chickens, so I ordered ten white jersey giants, went with whites cause nobody seems to have them. His are a closed flock originally from Golda Miller, the same breeder Maria Hall got her flock of blacks from. And I ordered five blue langshans (the max) and ten black langshans. They might not be breeder quality but I can do the work myself, want them for myself and food for the family anyway. The big cost is going to be for the coop expansion to keep them separate, and separate from my existing layers.

Got to thank you Metella for letting me know Pyxis has cemanis. I think her cross will serve my purpose of a meat flock better than the cemani redleghorn hatching eggs I was going to get. Hatching eggs scare me anyway, haven't hatched yet. Going to try my welsummer's eggs soon, rather practice on some that don't cost $$. Never been up that way before, might have to do some fishing. :)

Chickens are definitely contagious and for some they turn into other farm animals so be careful there. I started with less than 10 chickens have lots more now although I had over 100 I have scaled back and processed and canned a bunch that were getting old and not really laying but I also now have rabbits, goats, sheep, pigs, and as soon as the snow is gone and construction can begin again I will have cows.
