NY chicken lover!!!!

Stopped at the Cortland TSC to check out the chicks as a reward for little girl being well behaved during the shopping. The had Khaki Campbell ducklings, some pullets from earlier in the week and three tanks of various red chicks. No signs up to specify the breed of any. Also picked up a double pack of red heat bulbs to keep on hand since they are on sale. Same with another lamp, although I do believe I have another somewheres. Will be moving the valentines beasts to 2 tanks in the garage tomorrow, as they have far outgrown the current housing.

@myfivegirls;
WOW! Someone from my neck of the woods, I usually use my phone mobile version of BYC so I don't see where everyone is from. I was just cruising Craigslist and happened on some rare breed chickens for sale, checked out your website and then googled it, hmm saw your on BYC, where? couple posts on "NY chicken lover!!!!" (nice website you have by the way)
I live in Masonville work in Walton at 'Breakstones' best darn cottage cheese and sour cream in the whole USA!! I get some free cottage cheese occasionally, the chickens love it! Nothing better than free protein. I see you have ducks, I was lucky where I lived on top of a mountain, mile from the main road I free ranged mine (Pekins, Khaki Campbells and Mallards) year round and never had any problems because my in-laws let their Beagle free range also Lol! We moved a mile down the road with a nice small pond, the neighbors pond is huge at least two acres with running water coming across our front yard, small stream feeds our pond and theirs. About a 25 foot section never froze in the winter and the ducks spent the whole winter there. Never had any frost bite. (pond froze completely over this year, first time I saw that?)During warm weather the ducks, now mostly khaki mallard pekin crosses, would start sitting on eggs and I lost them one by one to predators, so I got rid of them all

I had one Khaki Mallard cross that hatched out over twenty eggs at a pop many times, she was a egg laying machine when she wasn't setting.
I don't know if you have ever tried it but what I did with the older ones was grind the meat up and make burgers out of them, duck taste a lot like beef anyway and duck burgers are awesomely good on the grill, and duck link sausage in casings, you can get the casings at Price Chopper. I miss my ducks they were awesome!

That is so awesome! We are literally only 1.5 hours away (I commuted an hour one way just to get to work, so this is wonderfully close)!!! Now my daughter and I will have 2 road trips to do - one to pick up a duck downstate and one for feed!!!

I wouldn't mind if I was getting 4 - 5 hundred pounds but I can't.

Went to TSC but not tempted in the least.

I have been saving EE hatching eggs for someone and then they don't show. So I Post I have another interested party and they say okay let them have them and now they're not returning e-mails. I am not happy.

Anyone here interested? Other wise I'll be tossing two dozen eggs.

My daughter is visiting her boyfriend at Colgate for the weekend, so if you would otherwise pitch them, I can call and ask her to pick them up while she is close to Syracuse! I have an incubator that is not yet in use or waiting for eggs, so I can certainly hatch them out

Howdy all. Just finished reading all 15 pages of post since my last post. Been a crazy week of unexpected doubles and covering for others at work. It makes for a nice paycheck but messes up the sleep, eat and chicken keeping cycle!

Got more snow earlier this week and now its warming up some but windy as all getout. Everything is a sheet of ice again and will be all mud if we get the 40s all week like we are promised. The girls never wipe their feet before going in the nest boxes to lay so I am cleaning eggs constantly. The brinsea is loaded with silkie eggs and the genesis is loaded with reds and crosses. I cooked up a bunch of eggs and added them to the broccoli, grapes, cooked carrots, leftover tuna salad and bacon grease. Stirred it all up and delivered it to the three coops. I am their Goddess!

Dh made a fabulous breakfast pizza this morning and boy was it tasty. Only thing is he used processed ham, which has nitrates, which I am highly allergic to. Couldnt figure out why my lungs were causing me trouble till I asked him about it. A hefty shot of benedryl liquid and it has subsided somewhat. He tells me I get sick on all the good stuff. I tell him the good stuff doesnt have all that crap in it and thats why I can eat it and not that processed stuff. Sigh.

Looking forward to having fluffybutts in the house. Its the only thing that keeps me from going crazy looking at all this white.

I hear everyone about cleaning the coops. I would love to clean mine out and put fresh stuff in but wading through 3 feet of snow to get to where I normally dump the used stuff is not going to happen. My buckets I use are also buried. I am hoping for some meltage and thawing that will enable me to get at least the silkie coops done.

Be well my friends.

Beautiful day today! Hit 41F - heatwave

Warm enough for m to reduce the mountain of poop to small hummocks, looks (& smells) better, 4 feed bags full - lots of help from the ladies. They are sooooooo bored. No more pecking at each other tho' thankfully. Egg production has an uptick too got 6 yesterday, 4 today so far. I threaten them with the stew pot but they know I'm bluffing.......
Hope to get the lumber I need this week so I can start the duck hut and fence in the garden areas from the deer (& chickens).
I hope everyone had a splendid day - looking forward to warmer days ahead....
