NY chicken lover!!!!

I get my colored spiral bands here : www.cutlersupply.com

I use sz 12 on all my hens except the smaller ones. I have Australorps, BR's, BLRW's, EE's,

I use sz 14 on my roosters - Australorps, Orpingtons, SLW's

I designate a color each year, that way I know how old my birds are. If I have the same breed from 2 different sources, each source gets its own color and the bird still gets the color of the year too.

Hey thanks for mentioning cutlersupply. I had never heard of them but they stock almost everything!!

It was posted today, so they should have some left. Think it was buff Orp, barred rock, RIR, comet and 1 other. All hatchery chicks of course.
Not sure where you are, but I hatched out Buff Orp and Partridge Rock eggs from Deb in Pompey. She sells hatching eggs and occasionally chicks if she had a broody hatch some. Cydney88 had Partridge Wyandottes, but were higher priced than I wanted to experiment with. I have one GLW roo, so got some mixed chicks.

Hello all. Just finished cleaning out all three coops and I could only do half of the terrorist coop as I ran out of bags to put it in. I figure that was 300 pounds of crap alone and that was only half. Had to bag it as there is still 2 feet of snow in the yard and I cant get to where I normally dump it for composting. My back now hates me and will make me pay. On a happy note, I feel much better knowing that the silkie coops are 100 percent cleaned, sprayed, treated and fresh. All walls, floor and ceilings were cleaned and sprayed. Have to do some painting again this summer. Turned over the run as well and both groups had time out to roam. By the time I finished in the terrorist coop, it was warm enough that the mud was horrible. I had on my yaktrax, which was good cause I was going up and down hills moving stuff. Once the snow is gone, I can finish cleaning out the front of that coop. The terrorists were beside themselves when I lock them out of the coop. Never have I heard so much whining and complaining and oh what efforts to try to get in! They were just bent out of shape that they couldnt see what I was doing.

I have decided to part with a pair of black silkies and am offering them here first before posting them on craigslist. Einstien and Witchypants were hatched out in June from my blues. Einstein is a very nice cockeral, nice cushion, good foot feathering, correct toes and has the great personality of his father, Little Man. Witchypants is a smaller but equally nice looking pullet. She is like her mother, Sassy, in temperment (bossy, vocal, needy) but she comes in a nice little package. I think they will make some very nice babies. I am only breeding blues and certain blue splash as I am working on light blue coloring. If you are interested in the pair, pm me. I will not sell them separately.

Candled my silkie eggs last night. Not sure about a few so I will let them go a few more days. Will candle my rir eggs tonight to see whats what. Lord knows the boys have been busy with the girls. I have a broody barred rock. She screamed bloody murder at me last night when I went to get the eggs. Got everyone all upset. I told her to muzzle it and took her eggs. Laying has picked up and so have my egg customers.

Okay, time to get busy again. Hope you all are doing as well.

My compost pile is growing by leaps and bounds with the spring babies - too cold to turn it all into the garden. Got hubby some rhubarb crowns when he was in the hospital - he just saw them today and is thrilled. Too cold to plant anything yet though!!
The yard looks like a giant swamp. The birds liked hanging out by the house, so the layers are melting down into a giant pond of nastiness. May have to more drainage, with the goose nest flooding and the seasonal swamp expansive and worthy of any monster truck rally....
Rancher's eggs are little beasts!!!Candled them and all but two had giant vessels and embryos with little eyes staring back at me! I'll give the two a week to see if they catch up or drop out, but the fertility is fabulous! I'd say the new temperature control module in incubator # 1 was a roaring success!!
Can't wait to see what hatches!!!
(And I can't wait for this mud to dry out!!!)

Jeff Foxworthy says;
You know you are a true upstate New Yorker when..."

"Vacation" means going South past Syracuse for the weekend.

You measure distance in hours.

You know several people who have hit a deer more than once.

You often switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day and back again.

You can drive 65 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging blizzard, without flinching.

You carry jumper cables in your car and your girlfriend/wife knows how to use them.

You design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit.

Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow.

You know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter, and road construction.

You can identify a southern or eastern accent.

Down South to you means Corning.

You go out for a fish fry every Friday.

Your 4th of July picnic was moved indoors due to frost.

You have more miles on your snow blower than your car.

You find 10 degrees "a little chilly." and 55 is shorts weather.

You actually understand these jokes, and you send them to all your Upstate New York friends and to those who used to live here and left. (Chickens).

LOL!! Yep!

Beercan--every single one!

So the terrorists finally figured out that the big door was open on their coop and have made it outside to forage. After a bit of time The Duke also realized he could go back in via the pop door and out the big door to get to his girls. His brother Rooster, however, is still frantically running back and forth inside the run trying to figure out how to get out to the girls. And they say silkies are slow. Mine have figured out how to open the door on their run and go in and out if I dont lock the doors. Major mud city out back. Oh, and those reds lied to chicken daddy when he got home and said I abused them by locking them out of the coop. Of course he have them goodies.
