NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning all. New job is going well. Lots to learn. Liking it real well so far.

Rancher---bear boards are pieces of plywood that have nails driven through it, set 2 inches apart. You lay them on the ground in front of where you want to keep them out. If they try to step on it, they will get poked or get nails in their paws. Nails have to be at least an inch or more long as bears have thick skin and heavy fur.

Nutty---keep us posted as to when you will have your chickenstock. I looked at onchiotta but that is way too far away for me to attend. You and tab are about as far as I can travel.

Those with an excess of beans, have you ever pickled them? They are fabulous pickled and I couldnt make enough fast enough for my kids to eat.

Lisa---I hope the peeps work for you. I have a few pickers in my flock of reds. They are on turkey/game feed, which is high in protein and have plenty of room/ Some are just pickers. I had some barred rocks who did the same thing. I just put saddles on the girls who had it the worst. That helped.

Almost done with the last baby set Im making for a former coworker/good friend. Got my mother started learning to crochet when I was down visiting last week.. She is getting it.

Off to work again. Everyone have a wonderful day.

I have one rir "pokey" that continiously pecks my light brahma's "bob" feathers from his rear end. I have tried blue kyote, seperating her, peck no more lotion, hot spray, increase protien. and a ton of other things. I recently purchased pinless peepers. I hope thisxwill work. Bob is very easy going to he does nothing when the ladies do this.

Any other suggestions?
I'm clueless. My girls are still young. If you find a good solution make sure to post it please. Incase one of us has the problem later.

The
There will be no fall Chickenstock I am changing my work schedule at the hospital and don't know when exactly it is going to happen so am unable to plan a weekend. I will be hosting my own chickenstock in the spring and will host one every year if other BYC members want to host one that is great just means more gatherings. My chickenstocks will not be just BYC members and if BYC members do not want to attend because of this that is fine.

As far as the Cold Springs Farm feed I am the dealer for the area so if you would like some pm me I have all there poultry feeds in stock.

Well I have a card made out to send you and I will still put it in the box.

But it is nice to hear from you just the same.

I've hatched out 60 chicks expecting there to be one in September. ....................................... just kidding.

I've got ducks hatching under broodies for Luv. I've been trying to hatch a few more marans and Delawares.

I think it's good to clarify yours will not be just for BYC members and I'd still like to come. Please be sure to post here when and what so I can plan. I'm sure you have a better idea of what you'd like yours to be and how to accomplish it. Don't be discouraged.

I think I mentioned in the card that there will be no more trips in the spring or fall.

Though DS and his are being transferred to Alaska early next year, so I'll have to be strategic and not go when it's real cold. I have a BYC friend in Alaska. It might be nice to get to meet her face to face. We met through the Granny Square swap.

Anyhow I'll hold on to the aprons DW made and let her know we won't need any more made til next year.

I understand about the hospital thing, but please don't stay a stranger.

Hopefully when we get this car looked at we'll be able to make a trip up. DW comes back from Florida this week. You'll like DW. Everyone does. Me not so much.

Bear boards? I've considered something similar for gardens to keep cats and squirrels out. I figured to bury them slightly under the mulch. Course now with chickens that won't work.

I've considered a chickenstock and I'm sure DW would got for it but we have so many mosquitoes and our septic system is not great.

Lord know DW likes to do such things. She always helps at Church weddings and banquets. She's baked more cookies than I'd care to mention. One wedding there were cheesecakes on every table and she made the wedding cake too. Of course I help too sometimes. We have warming trays and Drink container with spiqets. We have all these individual glass cake tray things on stems. I keep trying to get her to get rid of them. She did my daughters engagement party here and for a friend of ours. She's very confident. Me I get stressed out. I just follow her cue.

Tab and Travis are very nice of course, but I'd like to do more to help them next year. If they host. Maybe manage the grill and burn the burgers and dogs. (I know she'll see this and get the hint)

Look like it's rained a bit but I always have something to do.

TTFN,

Rancher

Oddly i dont find the ny forums very helpful or friendly. Ive posted questions in here and basically been overlooked or ignored. It seems if you are not an all day regular..no one really answers...sadly...i hope other newbies to these forums are getting better results. Just my experience...
i am sorry if we have ignored you ...I reply to most posts ...I must have missed yours ..
Just post again..like you did ...
I read / post on 4 different threads ..(which can be hours of time each day spent ...so I dont answer every post )
I have had chickens 3 years & am still learning chicken stuff ....will we ever know everything ?

You seem to know which girls are picking ...RIR ? is a bigger hen ..she might need more protein than the others
I would only give the pickers the extra protein ...if you give it to all ...there still may not be enough extra for the ones that need it
Try giving them something else to pick at ...
Get a suet cage to put in a fresh veg - cabbage , lettuce , cukes , zucchini, or any greens
You can hang a cabbage from a string ..see if that helps

You already have enough on your plate ...Busy Lady ...

Is there a back up plan for Chicken Stock? Cold Spring Farms In Sharon Springs is organic feed company I just learned about today anybody use their feed? I change green feeds daily what every abundant, 50% grain feed change over monthly. Sad is when your dog eats more vegetables then your Kid!

We could meet at a TLC that is centraly located ..Does any one know how to start one there ?

I have an Ameracauna rooster. The girls sit next to him & pull the feathers out of his beard & muffs. He sits there & just lets them do it. The girls were eating his feathers............yyuk ! I added black oil sunflower seeds to their diet.  It seems to help a little bit. I also give them raw &/or cooked meat, carcasses from turkey dinner, venision during hunting season  etc. The other day I tossed out raw burger to them. OMG, they were in heaven.  Sorry I don't have any other suggestions

I guess it is natural for them. Ido give them black sunflower seeds and mealworms to up the protien, but naybe pojey just likes to eat feathers.

I use purina crumble feed...
