NY chicken lover!!!!

Rancher you are a wealth of information.
Do you know of Sally Mason-Kennedy?

She is close in Morrisville and she is selling
Silkies on CL.

Or is there anyone on our forum that would have
Silkies for Sale?

I know you think Silkies are Aliens. But we love them
and in a small barn there is only space for one breed.
And the breed we have ...Silkies. Regards, Aria
Now you know I'm only kidding, right? I had silkies for a bit. Came back from Alabama with hatching eggs and three were silkies. I was going to keep them but the rooster was not nice and he crowed and crowed, so I sold them.

I don't know Sally and I'm not sure what information you mean, but I do read a lot. DW and I like to go to Barnes and Nobles, have coffee and read magazines for free. Anything that has chickens stuff catches my eye. Even silkies.

I would never let anyone harm silkies, though I won't go near them without my tinfoil hat on.

I read that in the movie the Body Snatchers originally it was Silkies and not Pods that were taking over.

I am going to hatch some silkies this month or so. I have 2 now and they are great!

Broke open five eggs today, all fertile. Looks like I'll have some Mille, Mille/Cochin and Mille/American game mix eggs going into the incubator when it gets here. Good job Billie Boy! (Yes my bantams are mixed for my viewing pleasure)

Welcome! He is a nice looking rooster. Not sure if you are aware that the meat breeds don't live very long. I hear the do much better if you ration their food. Also thy can not reproduce.

Thanks for the info, I did read that the meat chickens don't live long and have trouble getting around. I need to get my son mentally prepared for that. I have decided, since getting this chicken, that I would like to have more. Dual purpose birds, maybe a few just for eggs. Does anyone have any suggestions about breeds? I read that Rhode Island reds and brahmas are good dual purpose birds. Do they get along well with each other? Will they fly? Do they need a lot of room??

RIR can be awesome great layers, I'd recommend them for someone that has room.
Brahmas are huge but friendlier, but don't lay all that great. Easter Eggers can be pretty good layers of usually green eggs. Not all are equal though. One of mine has been by far my best layer even against leghorns. I really like the EE even though I do not plan in keeping them.

Thanks! I would like to buy almost laying pullets. Any source recommendations?
