NY chicken lover!!!!

Love the bearded dragons! I've always wanted lizards- iguanas or beardies... I forgot about that! Uhoh, my obsession has been re-kindled!!
droolin.gif
Now I'm a grown up with my own house, I'm allowed to have the things I want! (Sometimes I still forget that!!)

We don't know exactly. We took her in from some other local people who couldn't afford her when their cat got sick - they said she was about a year. We adore her but we don't really think a cross-country move would be safe or fair for her. Once we know a little bit more about our timeline we will look into rehoming her. Fortunately I am a nanny and one of my families has experience raising beardies and have been thinking about getting one. I know the little girl would love it! But I feel so bad re-homing her. (Her previous family fed her *gag* crickets though, so I'm glad that we spoil her with dubias. and oh, how she loves hornworms!)

Whoo all caught up!

I finally made the splurge and got an automatic chicken door. I keep having to close it though because it is so cold out.
ALSO, I have a hatch going simply because I want to see how my new incubator fares. I hear myfivegirls is doing a winter hatch, anyone else?

  • Rancher, good point about the fried rice. Have you ever tried kerrygold butter? Its a little pricey but delicious

  • A lot of you are talking about nipple waterers, I'm using the red and white ones that are heated from TSC but I think buckets and nipples would be more neat. Did you make this device yourself or purchase, from where?

  • Lapeerian thanks for posting the bee info. I have never heard of Brushy Mtn. but will check out the site.

On that same note, for anyone who is interested, wny beekeepers assoc is also having a meeting SAT JAN 16th TIME: 9:00 A.M. to Noon(ish) First Presbyterian Church 9 Paine Street (at Main) East Aurora, NY. PRICE: $10 at the door (no pre-registration necessary). TOPICS: Bee basics including bee biology and behavior, equipment, and a quick overview of beekeeping.

PART 2 DATE: Saturday, January 30, 2016 TIME: 9:00 A.M. to Noon(ish). TOPICS: More in depth details of a beekeeper’s year focusing on specific seasonal tasks and analysis.

I found out about it because I have been thinking about getting into bees but I don't think I'll be able to attend those dates. The site also has a place for people in the area to sell equipment and maybe bees too? Also there is a forum to discuss where you could prolly find local help if wanted.

Yes, there is a bee thread on here. Not a local thread that I found, been pretty quiet lately too. There are several beginner bee courses around this month, so if you can't attend one, you may be able to find another group or online courses. Or just start with attending your local association meetings, they are very informative. And like chickens, everyone has their own way of doing things. Finger Lakes Bee Club has a meeting Sunday January 17 at CCE in Ithaca. In March is Geneva Bee Conference.
Another supplier that I found was Shastina Bee Girls and GloryBee. They are in Oregon, but very easy to work with, small selection of items but reasonable prices. Again if you sign up for newsletters, you can often get coupon codes for free shipping or % off your first order. As for the bees, try to find a local supplier that has bees bred for the area. Some places ship from southern warm regions, the bees are not hardy for our northeast weather. The Southern Tier Beekeepers go in together on a club Nuc order, but think we will get some from a local fellow beekeeper that collects swarms. I did find a Vermont bee breeder, has Hygienic breeding (they fight off mites), would like to get for hubby but don't think they would ship.

No hatching here yet, don't want chicks inside anymore. But am thinking of what I want this year. Although next week my dad should have the horse barn electric hooked up! Then maybe I can hatch early spring and hang a heat lamp (safely) in the barn aisle for chicks in the Eglu.

Laperian gave you some great info. Some other sites you may want to check out for alternative hives are: www.beethinking.com for Warre hives and www.goldstarhoneybees.com for top bar hives. I have top bar and has just received my first Warre hive - I'm excited to see how they compare...

Are any of you in need of some backyard breed hatching eggs or a few dozen eggs for you kitchen?

As I am not insured yet I am willing to take donations for the eggs. I mostly just don't want them going bad. We use as many as we can but it's just not enough.

I'm interested, currently looking for my next hatch. Can't do anymore of my own as the other half says I only need so many Mille's and none of my standard sized are laying yet. Of course I see any porcelain D%uccles I'm jumping on then. Would really like colored layers as I use the extra eggs for crafts, ( the true reason i had to have chickens) but the other half wants his meaters now. What kind do you have and about where would pickup be?

Mine are a backyard mix. Cockerels are one gold spitzhauben and one silver spitzhauben. Pullets are production reds, black astrolorp and white leghorn. No mix breeds they are all pure, except the eggs. There is no telling what you might end up with. As for pick up, I'm in harpursville but can meet somewhere depending on where you are coming from would determine where.

I could bring some Belgian Trappist Dubbels, or maybe a Tripel, brewed in a abbey, by Trappist monks, Orval or Chimay perhaps?
'Bless, O Lord, this creature beer, which thou hast deigned to produce from the fat of grain: that it may be a salutary remedy to the human race, and grant through the invocation of thy holy name; that, whoever shall drink it, may gain health in body and peace in soul. Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.'
And it is sprinkled with holy water.
Just kidding rancher, please don't bite my head off...

I understand your concern, and I actually posted the beer kegs comment as a little bit of a joke, even though I could, I have four stainless 5 gallon soda kegs for homebrew. I bottle sometimes also when I want to give some away, but it is so much easier to just keg it.
I actually don't even drink in public anymore it seems. Family and work is most important to me now days, we have five kids and they all want something, need something, want to go somewhere, play outside, not conducive to drinking...I think I have had a couple beers at a restaurant once in the last three yrs. I save my beers for at night when the day is over, works done, the kids are in bed, and I can actually relax and enjoy them, watching TV, movie, news, puttering in the garage, whatever.

Little history on the Trappist beers, OMG they're goood, but super expensive, Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown brews similar, but they ain't monks. I watched a series of videos with Michael Jackson, the 'Beer Hunter' not the singer, he visited those Monasteries, awesome episode, the 'tuns' beer vats were old wooden open round vats in the cellar, not very sanitary, cob webs hanging all over. They leave the windows open, add no yeast to the wort, wild yeast blows in from the wind and they let God ferment it. They do not profit from the sales, all proceeds go to charity.
Did you know the monks invented Limburger Cheese? They wanted a cheese that was strong enough to stand up to the strength of their beers. When I heard this I had to try it, I love stinky super sharp cheese. I thought it was great, had it plain, and on sour rye with red onions like they do, very good. Then I tried it sober...almost puked, super disgusting, smells like sewer, tastes like...I can't even say...Made with the same bacteria that is responsible for human body odor, it's

Limburger killed Mighty Mouse!!

edited to add; Rancher my wife doesn't drink either, so I'm usually on my best behavior

Folks I'm just one person and no damage meant. I am not the host and in no way meant to press my standard on anyone else. I hope everyone has a good time.

As for the Trappist Monks there's a reason they live in Monasteries. Cuz when they drink all that beer they can't get out and raise cain in the village.

When I was in Greece, we visited some of the monasteries. Lord have mercy they must have been drunk when they decided to build the places on the sides of mountains. Some were very high and scary. One originally had a basket that was lowered to pull you up and let you don't. Of course it had been modified for tourist later on but I thought no way would I be a Monk. I'm scared of heights. Still we had to cross some pretty high bridges.

What was interesting was some of the gardens they had for growing food. Sorry if my sense of humor offends anyone. If you get the chance to go to Greece you should go.

That is indeed a scary looking place to build anything, rancher! I guess they wanted to be as remote as possible. I feel sorry for whoever had to go up and down in that basket. But maybe their aim was also to discourage visitors.

I thought I was out of the woods with this tonsillectomy recovery but early this morning I woke up and started spitting up blood. Went to the ER and apparently a scab came off too soon! I'm back on only soft and liquid foods :( A new scab looks to be forming hopefully or I'll have to go back to surgery to recauterized my throat...ouch! Just trying to keep positive thoughts that I won't bleed again. Keep me all in your thoughts and send positive vibes my way!
