NY chicken lover!!!!

any good gardening resources for the region? in the PNW we have Uprising Seeds - heirloom varieties cultivated in WA, OR and ID. there are also many books and guides to growing in the unique maritime climate of western WA. are there similar books and seed resources for central NY? might as well start studying!

I just went on line and ordered as many catalogs as I could. Some were better than others in that they offered info on "canning tomatoes, slicing tomatoes, etc. etc." Others have growing and planting information. Some offer discounts in their emails, which is good incentive.

I got a just onion catalog and a just taters catalog. Not all onion and taters grow good in all areas and they offer that information, which I liked.

I've already got my "shelling beans" and "three canning" type tomato seeds. I'm going to try drying beans this year. My goal is to see how much of a percentage of the food we use I can grow. I figure if I can grow 25 - 50 % of our house food that would be good.

We have a homesteading thread which is good. Lots off advice and nice people.

I ordered our onions yesterday, 12 bunches, split between us, my father in law, and a guy at work. From Dixondale Farms. Comes to $4 a bunch free shipping, a bunch is aprox 60 plants, we always end up with way more than that. I recommend them, always strong healthy plants, and they grow way bigger than sets.

Morning all from freezing chautauqua "we got dumped on" county. Last night we got so much snow my brother texted me to move my car at 11 pm so he could plow as it was deep. I had to shovel my way to my car and it was almost to my shoulders..

This year with my ladies and gentlemen I am using the deep liter method. I was going out every morning and scraping off the dropping boards. I can only get to them on the outside, but the dropping boards kept freezing and sticking. So I decided to just go with the deep liter merthod. I did it last winter and the coops were warmer. The only thing that concerns me is that I can't turn over the liter and dropping on the droppings boards.

Will it still work as supossed to? The coops are warmer like last year also.

Fruition seeds based in Naples, NY & Harris seed out of Rochester, Ny. Personally, I use Pinetree seeds (www.superseeds.com). They pack smaller sizes for the home gardener - always had good results,

turn it as weather permits. As long as it's froze there isn't much option. It works just the same just takes a bit.

I have their catalog. What onions did you order?

We have four in school right now, oldest doesn't have to deal with it. We were complaining to wife's sister about common core, she says her boy does just fine with it, it's easy. Well our kids do just fine with it also, straight A kids, still doesn't make any sense to beat around the bush to get a answer you already have in your head.
A teacher defending common core in a discussion on the news actually explained kids are scared of certain numbers, and feel safe, friends with others, why common core works. A 'easier' way for kids to learn....

I am so glad my kids are no longer in school, but they did attend a private Christian school so I don't think they were required to follow this nonsense.

I do have Pine Tree catalog and will take a look. I just got the David Austin rose catalog and am dreaming. I prefer White, yellow or orange roses to pinks and reds. I planted some Princess Margrets but they're not doing as well as the old pink climber I brought cuttings from at the old house.

NOW FOR WHY I dropped in.

DW bought a book for my GS, Title "Mother Bruce" Ryan T. Higgins. Very cute and very funny.

We have membership to B&N. They send me coupons for % off. This time 20% so we get the 20% + our 10% membership. Now if there is something marked down like a 40% then we get that plus the 20% plus our 10% membership. It's a really good deal. The membership is $25 year.

B&N sells toys too.

Anyhow if you read to your kids Mother Bruce is a cute and funny story.
