NY chicken lover!!!!

I think it was @BakerzDozen or maybe @bakingintherainthat has a fox? I was going to mention rabies works great but that's not funny. I think it was fox that got all our ducks and some guineas when we moved here.
I was just reading in a National Geographic lights turning on and off all night long are keeping elephants out of their crops and lion's out of villages in Africa.
Maybe a couple motion lights would keep fox away?

LOL omg almost spit out my water.

@PhoredaBurds
THank you for posting the pic of your watering system. Yesterday I had to replace my cracked red and white bottom and even at 20% off it was still $35. So I am thinking of switching to something like what you showed. I was curious if the chickens would really figure it out since they are incredibly stupid so it is good to hear your experience haha.

Everyone talking about heirloom seeds, it reminds me of the one year my sister and mother thought it would be a good idea to order 10 of every variety. Anyways the farmer must be selling them pretty cheap for the amount they purchased. They came a good size and in good condition. We grew them naturally and still had mountains of tomatoes. I can get more info if anyone wants, he's located in Clarence, NY.

I get a lot of seed catalogs in the mail but I never know if the prices are fair or not. One came today from BURGESS and i know they also have a website. I have been trying to find Bilberry (vaccinium myrtillus) if anyone hears of anywhere selling the plant. We have garlic scapes that grow here. Occasionally you will see them on sale at Wegmans for "like a lot" cant remember how much $$. I have a paper bag full of seeds somewhere around here..

Also a big fan of KALE because it lasts so far into the winter. Would love to try other cold hardy greens. I usually use them in smoothies and can go through several bags a week. Dinosaur kale is my favorite so far.

I say try anything that might work. I've thought of using blinking red christmas lights too. Of course I do have the white lights and some multi colored light that are on all night now. Plus lights in the runs.

I'm game for anything that will keep them away.

I've considered renting out my garden in exchange for a share of the crop.

Snowing out. DW and I went to the library because we've been in for three days. We did walk the mall (shoppingtown) a bit. Some of the stores were closing early due to a storm?

We have basic cable but what a disappointment that is.

I did sign up for Amazon prime, but even that is a let down.

Snow blowed the drive and out the chickens once already. I wait to close up time to snow blow and collect any eggs. I honestly think the chickens lay better if I spend time out in the yard.

Only the Dels and C. rocks are laying. It might be because of the water and them not getting as much as they want. While it's unfroze it is cold to drink.

Is it possible that one of my cockerels is trying to be broody? Or is it just coincidence that he has decided to nestle down on a pile of eggs 3 days in a row?
Because it's cold I would say he's trying to keep warm. I'm having to move hens out of the nest boxes. The only ones I let stay in on is Frenchy and Buckwheat.

Too if there is another rooster there he might be hiding out because he's getting picked on. I would just keep taking him out and setting him on the roost. I might help to put an empty milk jug in the nest box at night.

Are you sure it is a cockerel ?pics?
My roosters have called hens to a nest ..to try to get them to brood .
Heres Lucky trying to get a hen to sit .

Maybe he is trying to entice someone ?
Ive heard some roosters help take care of babies..
Not heard of ones who incubate ...

These are the Chickies

that went out in the snow

These are the chickies that got stuck under the deck ...with no place to go

Most came out when I called them ...two I carried..to the coop ...
2 I had to chase out with a pole ..if I let them they would have slept down there .
Warm & dry next to the house

I have used Burpee and I think you may be right. However I did grow their Italian Ice and they produced good and tasted good.

I tried the "Mortgage Lifter" and it sure didn't lift our mortgage. It didn't produce good, nor did the Brandywine.

I find that if I start my own plants they do better than if I buy them.

i'm going to have to try my favorite tomato out there - it's an heirloom variety called Stupice. it's early and really big on flavor. it's always done extremely well for us. we have tried some other heirloom varieties but the Stupice was by far the easiest to grow. favorite cherry tomato is sweet million - last time we grew them our plants grew over 6 ft tall. they'd be great for dehydrating.
