NY chicken lover!!!!

1. Does insurance cost a lot?

2. Do you need a rider on your homeowners policy.

3. What is covered.

4. How much is covered?

5.Are there a lot of claims?

6.Why do you need it?

1) it raised our premium up $103 a year for $2500 gross income
2) I have no clue what you mean by rider, sorry.
3 & 4)$2500 worth of chickens/ eggs/ meat sold from my flock.
5) not a lot of claims at all for poultry farms. My agent covers many farms and has never had a claim on poultry.
6) mainly in case someone who consumes anything raised on our FARM (yay I can call it that now) and ends up with food poisoning their not able to sue me and their medical for the inconvenience is covered by the insurance. Im too broke to pay thousands in someone else's medical so, $100.00 a year to be covered it is.
I can give you better details once I get all my paper work. I do know I am able to have a roadside stand and sell produce, eggs, chicks, chickens ( live or processed) . however I can only have $2500.00 farm income per year or I have to increase my premium. It goes in $2500 increment.

Sorry for your loss Gramma.
Thanks for the insurance info chickengirl and congrats.
Pyxis, waiting on an update.
I purchased eggs and await their arrival Friday.
My hens laid two eggs in their nest boxes today. They were laying 5-6/day, so I'm guessing they laid some in their travels about the yard on this pretty day.

Hovabator thermal airflow 1602n, opinions and experiences please.

That's the incubator I started with. It does a decent job. Make sure the room it's in has stable temp and humidity as best possible. I fitted aquarium airline tubing to the reservoir to squirt water in so that I didn't have to open it to add water. Highly recommend an auto turner if u don't already have one. I checked temp & humidity multiple times per day and adjusted as needed. It's not a "set it and forget it" bator, but quite a few chicks in my hovabator. Does that answer some questions?

On a happy note!! I got to put my first add for eggs up today. I am officially insured and able to sell!!! To top that my insurance agent is my first customer, neat ..
CONGRATULATIONS !

5 pages later and I'm caught up.

Grama sorry for the loss of Budgie.

Pyxis good luck with these babies on the way.

Midget is a wonderful momma chick and the babies are doing great. The both have the same coloration... maybe Partridge??? is the word I'm looking for. We let them out into the run while the others were free ranging in the yard. Midget was ecstatic dustbathing and the chicks eventually copied her.
I think I am going to sell 3 of my BSL they will be 1 yr old in May. How much should I ask for them? 2 hens lay large and one hen lays extra large egg most everyday. I am happy with the eggs but they are by far the most chicken aggressive birds I have. With them gone I am hoping the coop dynamics change. And a chicken could raise her babies in peace.
They definitely show Velociraptor tendencies. Their focus and hunting skills are amazing if not completely frightening.

I feed my chickens chicken all the time along with any other leftover we have. Pork, beef, Turkey whatever we have. I have also fed them cooked fish and they love protein of any kind.
My husband "just thinks it's so wrong" , but I figure it's better than throwing it away.
I am a recent empty nester that is having a hard time cooking for 2. All of my kids have recently moved out and are in college and working. It's hard cooking for 2 & I just hate it... our home seems so empty.
My husband is healing well after his surgery and is well enough that it's driving him (& me) crazy because he is so bored all the time. :)
Nothing much else going on although I am getting ready to buy new chickens.

The Rooster pecking order has changed here ...
My 5 month old Cockerel has dethroned my 2nd in command .that is 2 years old
I feel so sorry for Bobby ..he is being attacked by 2 Roosters ..
He is a very tame boy ..he hid out most of the day ..I separated him tonight so he could have some peace
He was hiding in the hen house

This is the 5 month old . ..Scotty he is mating ..and he challenged Bobby and won ..Now he chases Bobby too
He may be 1/2 Australorp 1/2 Cuckoo Maran as he is more aggressive than Bobby ever was

This is the boss Lucky ...No one challenges him ..he is not as tall as they are ...but he is BIG

Im not sure whether to keep Bobby or Scotty ...I know for sure 3 Roosters is too Many ..
I think this one is a Roo too ..not 2 weeks yet ....AHHHH

You should be able to get $ 10- $ 20 each for them they are laying & will lay at least another year .
My Budgie was the top hen ...she was a red sex link ..maybe it is their nature .

Thank you everyone for your Kind Words ...I am dealing with it slowly
