NY chicken lover!!!!

Loving you doesn't mean agreeing with everything you say, but treating you well.
Well said !
you can disagree about a issue or Topic
..but it doesnt mean you should hate or hurt the other person in any way .
Jesus said (Matthew 7:12)" Now called The golden rule
"All things, therefore, that you want men to do to you, you also must likewise do to them.”
Also Matt 22 :39 The second commandment , like it, is this: ‘You must love your neighbor as yourself.’+
If more people applied these ...We Would have a different world .
Stay Safe Everyone

I wanted to say Hello from NYC! I enjoy so much reading the posts here and learning from you all, I'm saddened because I have to rehome my Beautiful New Hampshire Red rooster.

About three months ago we got our first chicks 4 of them, they were about a week old sooo cute! we fell in love, it was our first time raising chicks but thanks to these boards I had a brooder and everything set up for them, at the time I had been told that since they were so small there might be a "possibility" of maybe one of them being a Rooster, well that's exactly what happened.

We are heartbroken having to let him go but we can not have him here, he sings beautifully and that's the problem I can appreciate it but not my neighbors and it goes against city codes too .

He is very docile and human friendly has been fed only organic food and LOVES grapes, I love my boy and the joy I have received watching them grow has made me very happy, happiest I have been in a while actually...

I sadly have to give him away, I have not decided if I would let one of my chickens go with him so that he would not feel alone
(I know i'm being silly) if anyone can help me I would very much appreciate it, I know you will all understand TIA :(

I've given away roosters, sold roosters, and paired roosters with hens to sell or give away. There is no blanket response to how to handle it. I can't take him because I already have roosters that I need to rehome. If you pair him with a hen for companionship you might want to consider asking for money. If he's only been fed organic, also contact any organic farms in the tri-state area. They'd probably give him a good home.

This is one of the things the chicken books don't always address. Dealing with our emotions. I think we've all have been or will be in this situation eventually.

Like Tao, I too have given away roosters. I hatch my own and have nearly 25 chicks now that will grow out and some will be roosters. I have one right now that can go.

All that said there is one benefit to this New Hampshire rooster folks. He can be crossed to a Delaware hen and you'd get sex linked chicks. All the males would be Yellow and all the females would be Red.

I have Delaware hens and I might be amiable to take him but I'm on the downside of chicken keeping. If I were younger I would take him. Also, I'm too far from the Bronx.

All that said, Bronx, you might want to post him to CL with the information about his benefit to getting "sex linked" chicks if someone has a Delaware hen. If you have a nice picture that would help too.

To anyone who does not know about New Hampshires they can be a large and very nice dual purpose breed, and make a nice cross for the homestead. You can keep the hens for eggs and process the roosters for the freezer. Keep your New Hampshire rooster with a half dozen Delaware hens and you'll have hens for eggs and rooster for meat for some time.

Again, Bronx I am sorry for your trouble.

I wish you well,

Rancher

New Hampshires are some of the sweetest birds.. i'm sorry you are having to deal with this.. i am still hoping all my 9 are hens.. even tho i live in the country, a rooster would upset my neighbours and i'm just not prepared to deal with roosters.. i do think CraigsList might be a place to start..

Have you spoken with your neighbors? I find that some folks are happy to hear a rooster crow. My neighbors don't seem to mind.

You know I just had the thought that the roosters crow might inspire a country feel and bring reduced stress. Perhaps some of us equate "the country" with a slower and relaxing atmosphere. Maybe even help with meditation.

Or it could just be me. I just came in from outside. There is a nice breeze and seeing the chickens in the yard transports me to a more peaceful time and place.
