she has black copper Marans. They are beautiful and lay beautiful eggs but she says not quite show. I'm hoping to get some from her in May.

I found a nice home for Chippy, my mean EE. He is going to live with a family from Thailand. Every Christmas they have a tradition of processing a cockerel for their Christmas dinner. I told them I can provide them with as many as they want. The are now a customer for meat birds and eggs in the spring and the largest cockerel every December.

Yep - lovely Marans - all Marans BUT I don't breed for feather color - hence you see Cowboy who had a white father with the most lovely leg feathers and a Black Copper Marans mother .... :)

My goal is a dual purpose bird that lays super dark eggs .... I don't show - that is what I have - I do have a BCM baby roo heading to my place in a few weeks - so if he covers the current girls - there will be very nice pure BCM - but I can't promise anything at this time. So my birds come from some very nice lines -but I don't cull or fuss with the feather color issue - in fact - I have some lavender copper hens, blue/black/splash ... so it is a fun guessing game on peep color for me.

:)

:) All the birds are in the coop wanting me to serve them today .... they DO go out in the snow - but I do spoil them by laying down hay for them to walk on ... They are slow to come out on these winter days - but I always seem to see a few that find their way all the way to the bird feeder to snag the dropped seeds.

I've got a yellow bellied sap sucker that is coming every morning - a lovely addition to just the jays, chickadees and cardnials. :)

I dont put out straw , etc for them to walk on ...dont have any ..
Instead I shovel a path down to the grass ...most days ..
For them to walk on & eat .
Try putting some scratch mixed with bird seed......Shake it so they know you have it ..That will bring most of them out .
Mine will walk in the snow if I dont shovel ...
On the way to their Rec Room under the deck which is dry & all dirt .
which is where I throw the scratch mix
