NY chicken lover!!!!

I do not know of anyone in particular but I ordered chicks and hope to breed them next spring. Since Fowley is not selling this year I got mine from chickenhill poultry.

My only concern is the shipping. I like checking my chicks out personally. I have read many horror stories concerning shipped chicks, but if I can not find what I'm looking for then I may bite the bullet....

My rooster, BB is lame. He didn't roost tonight and was favoring one of his legs. His comb is pale, I gave him water and food, and I hope he makes it through the night so I can help him tomorrow. If he doesn't make it my flock plans will all change. :(

He didn't make it through the night. I looked him over and there were no signs of injury or illness. He seemed a little off yesterday. I thought he was eating and drinking, but his crop seemed empty today. :/ :(
So, plans will adjust. I'm not looking to replace him yet. I am going to contact a Brabanter breeder I know and see if I can get a quality cock to cover all the hens in the spring.
The hens are talkative. No signs of illness or injury, but I will look closer throughout the day. I gave them oatmeal with sugar and cayenne pepper. They love it.

So sorry - we all know how valuable a good rooster is ....

Mine are all doing fine in this winter - even the ones I got from fellow BYC'ers - Rex, Duke and Baron - all young roosters - I must have been out of my mind to take them in - but they are all doing well and looking good. :)

I would keep in mind how close you are to the nearest "hub" post office. I'm near the Hancock airport where things come in. I've had to drive out and pick up chicks. Even overnight has been late. Check for reviews of places you plant to order. Tell whoever that you want the chicks to go out in the AM not PM. The sooner they get in the system the sooner you'll get them. Late mailings are a bigger risk.

I worked for the PO so I know how things work.

If you can get someone closer to a hub to pick them up for you that would be better. Rural PO's are a bigger risk. Once you get what you want keep two or three roosters and hatch your own. Either with a hen (any hen will do) or a good incubator. ALWAYS keep a spare rooster.

I incorporated my rooster in with my ladies. He's mating away like crazy and such a gentleman. I haven't gotten attacked yet so I like him too. But one question.... I have one hen who is getting the **** beaten out of her by her sister. They've always been on the bottom of the pecking order but the mean one will grab her by the comb and drag her across the coop. Her face had bloody scabs all over and her comb is ripped open so I moved her out to clean her up and let it heal. I tried to put her back out yesterday and the one mean been went after her again. What should I do? Do I let them fight it out? They've never been aggressive with each other until I added the rooster. I feel so sad for this hen because she looks like she's in pain.

I would put the mean one in 'time out' by herself for a week or so. That will adjust the pecking order a little, but keep an eye on her, if she remains mean she might be dinner....

Morning everyone - in case anyone is interested - I have 2 Welsummer roosters and one Spitzhauben rooster looking for some ladies to love. I'm putting it here first, but they will be generally posted in a week or so.
If you want them (him) let me know, I would be willing to travel part way to meet you. Price ??? make me an offer..

ISO blue or green egg laying pullets, I lost my cream legbar to a hawk late fall and now have a boring egg basket. i would especially like a green egg with brown speckles layer... I'm in southern Garrison near Peekskill. If you have hatching eggs I'd be interested as well
