NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi everyone - in case you didn't see the Chickenstock thread, the 'for sale, raffle & food' sheets are looking bare! If you plan to come and know what you're bringing can you please let me know so I can post it, TIA :)

I don't reckon I'll be able to come but I can donate to the cause if you'd like. If someone will stop to pick things up. I'll see if I can find the thread.

HI all, today was a balmy 46 degrees! After clearing snow and ice off the car a few times earlier in the week it was lovely to get home from work and let the girls out to free range for a few hours. Green grass coming through = 'bottoms up'

Got a few things going on with the chickens, firstly one of the Easter Eggers (not sure which one) has started having little 'pebbles' of extra shell, normally on the pointiest part of her eggs, and occasionally dotted around the sides too, none of the other chickens have this, have read a few threads on here, doesn't seem like I need to be too concerned, I'm just not sure why it's started happening, and just with one chicken. Any ideas?

Noticed some thinning neck feathers, and found just a few lice on one of the 4 chickens, no crusty grey lice egg build up on the feather shafts, so hoping I caught it early, treated all birds and the coop. Not really a surprise, as we have lots of wild birds around, and always see so many rodent tunnels in the snow when it starts to melt, and know that can be 2 of the main species that can spread them.

Finally, hoping a poop picture doesn't offend anyone, our Red Sexlink Ginger, is not having any formed stools at all anymore, for a few days I've been noticing her producing these very liquid splats (she is the one I found a few lice on). Other 3 chickens producing normal stool. She is eating normally, active, laying.

Would welcome advice on recommended dewormers. Do any of you give them on a set timescale as a preventative, or only if you see worms in the stool? I'm wondering if it's worth giving them a dewormer now they are back out free ranging for a few hours each day. What product would be a good one that I can get in a small quantity, as we just have the 4 birds. Or does anyone think it could be the stress of having mites that could be causing this loose stool?

Finally I'll end on a silly one - Ginger is very curious, I was squatting down, trying to get a nice photo of the 4 girls all lined up, when she turned and saw me - and just had to come running over and look what was in my hand, well, you know, it could be a camera shaped treat! The following blurry 'extreme close up' is the result!

Anyone need a nice buff brahma cockerel? Mareks vaccinated, fecal float tested zero in February. Nice looking but just hatchery stock. Hatch date 10/9/17.

I have three boys. Two, a cochin and salmon Faverolle get along great and work together well, but this guy will fight.

He's great with people(zero aggression) not fearful but I don't pet the boys. You can pick him up and he stays calm. Polite with mature hens but a bit rapey with the little faverolle pullets his own age, typical young roo. He's just too big for them. He's a motivated flock care taker, even caged he eats last.

I've had him segregated hoping he'd calm down but he just isn't a rooster friendly guy. Bears confinement well.

I'm south of buffalo, would drive to meet someone.

Hi all! I've been MIA for a long time on here, but decided to check in for chickenstock.

It's been a crazy busy year thus far! Have hatched several batches of chicks already, but hoping for spring to finally arrive so I can build a few more breeding coops and separate them.

Hi all,

I live in Maryland but am driving up to Buffalo in a few weeks and looking for someone who needs bantam roosters. I have a silver duckwing Easter egger and a sebright. No one in Maryland seems interested.

Thanks,
Kelly

Hi, Kelly. I'm a new member, just joined today. while looking to see who else is in my area, I noticed your post. exactly when are you driving to the Buffalo area? I am thinking about taking your roosters, but I have a few issues before I adopt anyone's animals. My property is just a 40-acre piece of dirt/grass. No fence, no coop, no run, nothing. I was planning on starting all that stuff in June at the earliest. If your boys can stand being inside-only for a few weeks, I MIGHT take them earlier. I'm renting a trailer in a trailer-park as a temporary place until I start house/farm building which wont start until June. I would be willing to talk to you about it, so please feel free to contact me. Somewhere there's a private message function, but I havent figured that part out yet. Been here less than ten min and already getting stuck. lol.
looking forward to talking with you, Tara (Tara's Farm username).

I've had eggs sorta like that, didn't worry about it, straightened out eventually. Is she just starting back up laying? Might be just getting things worked out in her system, 'timing' a little off.
I've never wormed chickens, never heard of anyone worming chickens till BYC. I still haven't, never had any sick chickens or any die on me ( besides a couple one yr, not sure why ) 20+ yrs of having chickens I don't think that's bad, especially after reading some horror stories on here. I've never had a fecal float test but recently when I process I've opened up their stomachs and intestines just to see if there is any, haven't seen any. I know they can, every living animal out there can and does, I'm not against worming chickens just haven't ever done it myself. I was about ready to this winter, no eggs... I always have eggs even in the winter. Try to have young stock lay around fall and then they lay all winter. My giant's I have now usually lay in winter anyway, and the Naked necks were just laying young, everybody stopped...... should I worm them? dang, no eggs, maybe I should worm them?....
About two weeks before Easter they started back up and had enough eggs that were not frozen to hatch for Ehal.
Now I'm swimming in eggs, have multiple 18packs in the fridge, pickling them now, so many eggs... now that it's spring .... NOT! I think we are in a perpetual winter.... :barnie
Girls are laying great now anyway.
