NY chicken lover!!!!

I like using leaves too but this fall was so wet I didn’t get as many as I would of liked. I have been mixing with pine shavings and I bought 2 small packages of the chopped straw and trying sweet stall pdz this year. I’m at about 12” of bedding down now and taking out the areas that get really dirty when we get these thaws and I can push a wheelbarrow. In the spring when I’m able to get it all out I’m thinking I might but down a 6” layer of mulch to build the floor up better. This winter has went way better than last year with the new additions.

20171028_171615.jpg I was able to get 9 bags of leaves from the neighbors yard today ..Some of the leaves were still too wet so I left those ..if the weather holds tomorrow I am going to try to get some more ..Im hoping it doesnt rain or snow

Hey New York thread!

Writing from Binghamton--looking to start a small backyard flock this spring. Anybody know anyone nearby who might have some interesting hatching eggs? Thought I'd look around and see what was available before going the Agway chick route ;)

Welcome! I’m in the southern Adirondacks. I have a flock of different breeds and am looking to get a rooster. Would be willing to give you hatching eggs if I get a boy. You have lots of options on this thread tho!

Hi all, I just got looking in this forum. Wow! Lots of people from NY. I'm from Windsor, NY. I have 4 hens and 11 3-month olds… I think 5 cockerels and 7 pullets that the hens hatched out from fertilized eggs we bought from a small farm. Our hens are red sex link and all of the chicks are black, barred or copper/black.

Hey Kat! I'm nearby in Binghamton--can I ask what small farm you bought your eggs from and what breeds they have?

John

I’m not far from you in Marathon. I have a mixed backyard flock, which results in interesting mutt chicks. Currently only getting 1-2 eggs a day.
Later on spring, when weather is more suitable, I often get some purebred eggs shipped for hatching. I watch the auction threads for good quality Wyandotte’s.

hi John, I just saw your post... the guy that I got the eggs from got rid of all of his chickens this past fall. Sorry. But, I have 4 roos from his eggs that I would be willing to give you to start with. They are currently free ranging, just hanging out in the lean-to with the horses. They are not mean but are also really not handled. They are either a brahma or langshan mix (that's what his 2 roosters were)... 3 look like barred rock coloring, 1 is copper/black... all are very pretty... all have some feathering on their legs and feet. They are excellent for keeping the poo in the pasture broke up and eating bugs, but I don't want any roosters here. The hens will do that just fine. This pic is 2 months ago, they have grown a bit since then. They are very large.
