NY chicken lover!!!!

Tab's chicken obsession :

If I set up my coop as a greenhouse too, the chickens would say "Yippee a buffet!"

I intend to put the shelves up high where they can't jump to. I figure maybe eight or so trays near the top. I'll post pics when I do. As soon at HD has some cull lumber suitable for the shelves.

Tabs - the panels are $40 for two at TSC and I used left over chicken wire for the run. Since your using it as a green house you just need to have chicken wire for the plastic support. Two panels make an 9x8 greenhouse and you wouldn't need to put it on blocks cuz a gravel floor would be fine. The ply wood floor was the most expensive for the coop. The run much cheaper, maybe less than $100.00 . Check your chicken friends and ask if they have some left over chicken wire laying around. I got some hardware cloth from a friend and even had enough to surround my roses. Plus you'd only need one door so that would be cheaper too. I used alot of "cull" lumber 2x3's or 2x4's from HD. .51 cents a piece. I stop in often to see what they have and save up til I get enough. Right now I've got enough pieces of plywood to do the roof on my 8x24 run. Next year I buy the roofing material. Just earmark you egg money for the green house. You know me, I've sold you chicks for cheap so no worries there unless you want Green Fire birds and I haven't ordered mine yet.

Listen folks, I've got five chicks I really don't want to deal with this winter. Plus I may take a trip to AL in December so if you want to come and get them they're yours. A couple of Dels and an EE and two I'm not sure of. I know I'll get in trouble for giving chicks away but such is life. See if I keep them it means setting up the pen in the back room again and it gets messy and quite frankly I just don't want to clean the mess up again. Not to mention they'll be there for a few months. Might even be laying by late winter which means I gotta set up a nest box. I only got them cuz of the darn broody hen. I'm just to old to want to deal with it.

Love ya,

Rancher- I wouldn't mind greenfire birds because they're pretty or your chicks because they're so stinking cute, but we're in process of downsizing right now. DH wouldn't be too happy if I went out to get replacements for the ones we just sold, especially since we plan on hatching more of our own in a few months.

I'm in the mood to say spring is right around the corner and ignore the fact that winter hasn't quite hit yet.

Mine won't eat raw pumpkin....what's the trick?

Sure they will , just crack it open and back off on scratch. They'll eventually eat it. They just need time to discover how tasty it is.

Well clearly you and your hus. are wise people who know when to say enough. It's easy to get carried away. Like me

Though I just did sell nine hens. I had plenty of eggs and sales had slacked off but then sales picked up again. Now the girls have picked up again. 21 yesterday. And that's not including the 10 BRs and 2 SLW who haven't started to lay yet. They probably won't start til very late winter.

Well the new girls have started laying so it's up. Plus warmer weather helps too. Lots of water too. I like the nipple waterers but the girls don't seem to get enough water that way. Nipples are good for "lazy days" but not something I can rely on. Unless I put more nipple waterers in the run. In the winter they are in the coop.

Well come spring I'll have more chicks of different breeds. Lav, buff and BBS orps. Good Lord willing.

My Coronation Sussex is trying to breed my Coro pullets, so hopefully I'll get eggs soon. I am getting 1 egg from the Light Sussex pullet that is split to Coronation so I should get mostly Coronation chicks. Once my Coronation Sussex pullets start laying, I'll be offering chicks when I've hatched out enough for myself...I love the Coronations, they are so beautiful!
I picked up a couple of pullets from a friend that bought his directly from GF so I know they are pure GF.
