NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi everyone!
I'm new here, but have been reading this New York thread to learn as much as I can about how to take care of my chickens in this climate. You all have been very helpful, so thank you.

I have six girls, 4 RIR and 2 BR, they are from Lee's Feeds, a great place. I wanted pretty chickens that are not too difficult to raise as I learn. I adore my chickens, and my husband likes them too. He has built them a lovely coop, predator proof and cozy, although it is not finished to his aesthetic wishes, maybe in the spring.

My girls have lots of personality, and I entertain my long suffering friends with their antics...and they are giving us 3-4 eggs a day still since it is their first winter. We can't eat that many, so I deal eggs in the locker room at the gym!

I'm loving life in CNY.

Glass. Used to go to Lees when I had Guinea Pigs. They used to have my wood chips delivered to the house 10 bundles at a time.

I live too far from there now. I do have a Tractor Supply and Country Max nearby though. Make sure you watch CL if your looking for new chicks. You never know what I have.

I may be getting some Columbian Rock eggs to hatch. Which means another hoop coop.

Stoney - I will have to modify my trap with hardware cloth to catch what ever is trying to get at my chickens. I don't own a gun. Would they go after peanut butter? I see some late nights ahead as I watch for the bugger. Is there anything that deters them? Like the smell of humans? While I have been "marking" around the place pehaps I need to be more diligent.

I just went on the web and found some U-tube videos on how to build a weasel box and trap. Very interesting. Looks like I'll be building a few of these.

I too "mark" . I think it helps. Meat seems to work best as bait. At least this is what I have found. I've caught many possums, coons and skunks on hot dogs

I have a friend up the road with loads of waterfowl, kept in 4 ft high garden fence. NO ROOF! He keeps a flood light on all night and has never had a problem. Maybe a light will help for now until you can get the trap ready. Have a good night and keep warm!

Found a cute lil mole/vole under my feeder today. Poor guy. Was tempted to let the chickens eat him but he went back to his spot. I guess as pests go I should be grateful. :)

Thanks everyone for the well wishes.

Framac - I don't have peas. Good garden o' peas, my neighbors would have a cow. Now that I think of it I always wondered where Cows came from.

Anyhow if I did you could have it. We stayed at a hotel in TX once and they had one. It was noisy. I'd like some Guinea hens but they are even worse.

On another note I realized that something is after my chickens in the hoop coop. I did see prints and haven't researched them but I think it's a weasel or mink. Can they get through chicken wire? Whatever it is it can't get through the hardware cloth, thank the Lord. It chewed through the felt covering the coop part but it got through the chicken wire into the run.

How can I deal with it?

"good garden of peas!" Hey Rancher, I just finished reading love, Ruby Lavender. It was a great kids book. Thanks for recommending it!

Snow snow snow! Probably three inches here. :) The chickens are not happy. :)

SO FAR (knocking on wood here), the coop my DH thought had TOO much ventilation and that I left too much open space is turning out to be my best coop - no frostbite at all, not even the roo. And thankfully the snow is not getting in the coop.

We made the coop out of this and left those large two triangle areas on the top 'open' and covered it with hardware cloth. Just put a front on with some doors and window.

I'll have a bunch of free baby roos available in a week or two if anyone would like them - probably will be a few girls in there as well, since I am not all that good at sexing. If no one wants, next stop craigslist and then auction. Too many baby birds in the house and they neeeed to go. :P Can meet between Glens Falls and Albany.
