So the incu is full. BUT the girls don't seem to want to lay very well these days.

I'm going to switch back to Dumor for the Dels and leave the others with Agway Egg Producer. Also I have a picking problme which in the Dels is something i've never had to deal with before. I wonder if it's the feed and lack of nutrients? They've plenty of room.

I have an EE that is broody and is driving me nuts.

Also the BR's and the two SLW shoudl be laying by now but I might get an egg every other day or so. And then it's on the floor and not in the nest box. I've very digusted with them.

I've wormed every one and gave them a days of vitamins but to no avail. This weather has been great for me but hasn't helped them at all.

*looks around at all the empty nesters a bit sheepishly* I'm averaging a dozen a day. Rock on, my pullets! I can hook you up with a couple dozen if need be.

My kefir grains are also extremely happy now. I had a jar of cherry-apricot jam that was more like sauce, so I've been mixing that in, and it's great!

We are going from 6-8 eggs per day to 10-12. With 40+ hens, that is not good, but at least it is finally going in the right direction.

I am up to 4 eggs from 11 hens. Not good, but better than NONE a few weeks ago.

And no updates again. Cripes. I thought this "upgrade" was supposed to be a good thing. But when has any upgrade ever been a good thing when it comes to technology?

Hi and Welcome!

There is a thread for lower NYS Dutchess county and below. There may be more people closer to you. I also went to Cornell for a summer internship and loved it. Isn't it funny how it always stays with you? I lived near the suspension bridge...scarey to walk across that.

Anyone out there from Long Island. (My heart still belongs to Ithaca but have lived in Islip for 20+ years and my son was born in South Side so you figure it out) I have a small flock and a couple of baby roosters if anyone wants them (NOT FOR SUNDAY DINNER THOUGH) Late October I bought an incubator and a number of fertilized eggs. Hatched out 13 chicks have given away 4. With the 9 I have left I have several roosters (One Red Blue Laced Wyandotte, One Turken(UGLY only a mother caught love)and one fancy laced Polish )Can't keep them IT'S THE LAW. Like no one in the Town of Islip is breaking any code. I have neighbors the would have a problem.The idea behind starting them in October was so that I didn't have to buy day olds in the spring and wait months for eggs.Mentally I think I am in a 9th grade biology class. Can take the girl out of the lab but you can't take the lab out of the girl(Microbiologist by trade-Cornell Vet School and API ). THANKS for letting me vent. NOT A TYPIST

My 40 chickens were cranking down in laying (I even have a few April chickens that are starting a molt!), but with the temps lately I am up to 20 eggs (was getting 8-12 the last few weeks). The older chickens are going back into production again and I'm getting a few green eggs. YAY.

MMMM!cherry-apricot kefir!! sounds really tastey! I will probably need to have some eggs. I think my husband will be off on Tuesday, so how about Monday?

Morning everyone!

For some odd reason I am not getting the postings in my email from this thread since the change went into being. Anyone got any suggestions as to how I fix this? I missed like a whole lot of postings!

I think the egg drought is finally breaking! In the last 4 days I have gotten 3 eggs, which is more than what I have gotten IN TWO MONTHS! About time the girls started putting out again. I will say the molt was hard on them and they are now looking really, really good. Like all grown up hens good. They will be 2 in April. I hope they will continue ramping up production. I also found a silkie egg in the run this morning! At almost 9 months old, the girls are finally starting to lay! Now if I can just get them to lay inside the coop in the nest box, that would be cool. Little Man has been more assertive and challenging lately so I have had to put him in his place. He is much more respectful than Mumbles was and usually stops when I tell him to knock it off. I have not seen him trying to mount the girls in my presence so either he has been unsuccessful in his bids for some action or he doesnt do it when I am around (which is fine cause everything I read says he shouldnt anyways as I am the leader!). I am hoping that I can hatch some chicks this spring or summer.

Does anyone have any kefir grains they would be willing to share? I would like to make my own as it is mad expensive to buy in the store and they add sugar to most of the ones in the store. Let me know please.

I may be looking for some red star hatching eggs this spring as well. Let me know if anyone has any.
