NY chicken lover!!!!

My first order of chicks came the end of Feb and being new and not having the coop done yet it was quite the adventure. However what I learned was to have the coop ready and raise chicks early if I wanted eggs before the snow flew that year. So IMO starting in Feb was a good time.

I have some BR's that were delivered late and they've yet to lay a decent amount each day. They are certainly old enough.

When this hatch is done I'm doing another for sure. I've told no one to expect eggs to buy for the next week. All Del eggs will be saved. I may buy some too.

Mad - I suggest starting the end of this month not next.

Question for everyone. Are you hatching and what are you hatching? How many eggs? How many do you plan to hatch this year? I've got 27 in now. 10 CR, 4 EE, and 13 Del.

What breeds or breed do you wish you could get? I'm sure these might be repeat questions but I'm old and forget alot.

I just hatched out umm.. three NN, one mystery mutt and 14 blue eggers of varying types (supposedly real americaunas and EE's). What I would like? Hmm. I would LOVE rose combed leghorns and some green egger NN. :)

I have this hatchery order in for late april, but I think I may cancel it. We shall see as it gets a bit closer, but my coops are at capacity.

I just placed a call and talked to Paul Harter about chicks but won't be able to get them until late April, but I am going to order them just the same.

I was going to order some Partridge rocks but he says this is the last year he will hatch those since no one really wants them.

He does have BO but I think Hinkjc farms has good BO's and see no since in going anywhere else for them.

Now last year I made the trip down and brought chicks back for one other person and may do so again. If you think you may be interested let me know. It's much easier to come to Syracuse than for ya' all to drive down. Unless of course you want to. I'll have to watch the gas prices. Shipping costs are about $40 and it may not be worth the drive now that I think about it. 10 gallons of gas eats that up huh?

I just checked Hinkjc site. They won't be selling Lav orps. Perhaps just this year, can't say. I have a buyer for the roo I got last year, but will be working with her black and her lav hens that I have.

So I doubt I'll be going down. I don't need anything really. She doesn't ship either. Bummer.

I only have a pair of BO's from her so I might order 5 chicks from P. H.

That nice red girl who was seeming broody is continuing. I thought this morning that she was over it. I have pulled her out of that nest box several times (at least 4)each day, and confiscated all the golf balls, she had three in that box, but she was back in there this afternoon. And her poop smells terrible, and she has plucked her under wings....I think she is serious.

But, since I only have 6 girls, provided the nasty girls get straightened out, maybe I could have two or three chicks. I would say eggs, but the odds would be good that there would be some males , and then I could have neighbor problems, or attachment problems...so chicks may be the way to go. Coop is 6x8. It may need a small guest house for emergencies or time out,...my poor husband.

But wouldn't it be grand to see little chicks being raised by that nice red girl?

I need good weather so I can get the basement girls back where they belong.

All this talk of brooders and hatching is certainly contagious...

Right now I got a Barnyard mix in the Bator (35).

I am going to be hatching some B/B/S Orps, Amers, RIR, BLRW, and Ordering some Jersey Giants. Who knows what else.

My wife told me not to go crazy with hatching and every week comes home saying that she has people wanting 30 more. Such an enabler she is. I think she needs about 120 for her friends right now, and I need at least 40 for mine, not including what I want.

I am trying to get some Kedu Cemani.

It's nice to hear everyone talking about hatching chicks. It means spring is coming soon.

We are having some eggs hatched at the elementary school. I can bring them over when they are ready to fire up the incubators.
Anytime now.....

Chickens are loving the light snow we have. They are free ranging (one coop) or out in pen (the other coop) every day.

16 - 18 eggs daily still.

Have a nice evening everyone.

Wonder if Oneida county cooperative extention is doing the chicken/other fowl program this year?

Aria: Wonder what a Silkie/Ameraucana would look like?

I don't know about Oneida but we are having a Poultry School in April - love to see lots of people there!

It's a really fun day.

Rancher - I have 62 eggs in 2 incubators right now.

23 Chantecler
13 Australorp
15 Araucana
9 Mille Fleur D'Uccle
2 Porcelain D'Uccle (slackers!)

I will be candling later this evening, after dinner, I am hungry! I am in the February swap 2x's and signed up for the March swap 2x's plus I can save eggs from our girls too. We also have three Chantecler girls that give me the broody-wanna-be stink eye.

I would rather have eggs NOT BROODIES.

Driving to get chicks or eggs is getting awfully expensive. Shipping isn't great for eggs but for $10 you can usually get some eggs shipped.

the more eggs I collect, the more I think of firing up the bator. Past experience has taught me to have a brooder ready before loading the bator. Gotta do that. Anyone interested in Sumatra's, blacks and blues, and the RARE splash? Knowing I wouldn't have to keep them all would help ease my beautiful wifes mind.

i also could hatch some EE's. EE with black Sumatra as the roo. Blue eggs.

I'll take a dozen. Seriously. I love your birds. How much you charging per chick, so I can start collecting my pennies. (seriously, I collect pennies for such purchases and take them to the bank for "real" money to make the actual purchase)

Edited to add: Sumantra only...have EE already and Lav Ameruacanas. I'll take some of each color, whatever hatches, I'm not picky, but I really like the black roos, so mostly black would be wonderful. Of course, blue would be nice, I don't have anything blue. Or splash. OK...I go back to "whatever hatches", I'm not picky. LOL
