NY chicken lover!!!!

Tab,
I was obsessed with blue eggs at the start. THEN I learned that Ameruacanas are NOT reliable layers. 2 - 4 eggs a week at peak. BUMMER!!!! Now I am keeping 2 Ameruacana roos and am going to breed my own EE, trying to get shades of green, blue and teal in the eggs of the offspring. (this of course assumes I ever get another broody hen sigh) Have your Ameruacana's ever laid "well", meaning 5 eggs a week?

my Ee's lay ok. But they aren't 6 day a week layers. 4 to 5 days a week though. I hatched, and am hatching more EE/Sumatra crosses. Most of my Sumatra hens lay 5 to 6 eggs a week, and a few lay a blue egg anyway. Doing the experiment to see how many they ay, size of egg, and frequency of the eggs. I like my eggs for sale to be many colors.

now my best egg layer currently is a young RIR who lays an egg for at least 20 days straight, and then takes 1 day off, and goes right back to it again. I have some of her eggs in the bator now, hoping they all turn into hens like her!

Mine lay pretty decent, I can't say I kept track of how many per week though. They all took the winter off, I saw someone had laid an egg this am (as it ran by in the mouth of a hen!) I wonder if its like the dark egg layers, it just takes longer to *make* the eggs?

I'm getting some Cream Legbars, so it should be interesting to see if there is a compairison in egg laying ability?

You guys are making me want to hatch, BIG TIME! I have nothing to put in the 'bator!

How long will it take my new roo to fertilize all the girls? I've seen him mating with a couple, so that pleases me.

We have 10 girls and are getting 6-7 eggs a day on average. I have a Mille Fleur D'Uccle who hasn't laid for months and months, though. I've seen her on and off the nest, so I hope she's thinking about laying today.

The hens would be fertile in 2-3 days. When I got a new roo I waited 5 days then set some eggs to test for fertility. 4 of 8 hatched.

Now I'm REALLY happy. I'll wait until he's been here a week and start saving them. I can't wait to see what those babies look like. There are some interesting mixes.

I think you are all very brave to even consider going to TSC during chick days. I know myself, I would be about as likely to leave that store without chicks as I would be ignore an open package of oreos when I'm starving. And it hasn't even been a week since the basement saw the last of the chickens.

Have you had Inside Out Oreos yet?. DW makes them at Christmas time and they are delicious.

I went into TSC twice this week and left without any chicks. Darn, they ones they have are bigger than the ones in my brooder so I can't slip a few in and say "I must have counted wrong, there were always 19 in there." LOL

I have no trouble resisting hatchery chicks. Not to mention I have too many now. Where on earth would I put them. I'm trying to keep things pure and an added hen of any breed would mean crosses I can't decifer.

Plus you have to buy six. That's practically a flock all by itself.

Not to mention what would I do with these chicks that may or may not hatch from the incu. Hatch day is Fri - Sun. (one can never tell how long it will take. ) My broody had a dead chick and I think she's given up. That's fine with me but she did hatch out three chicks and three ducklings.

My EE's lay pretty good considering they are on year two. They are hybrids you realize, and hybrids are better layers than most pure.

My Ameraucana lays about 5 days per week. Same as my english game hen. They are housed together,so I think they are in competition with each other.

Anyhow, my girls say they are hot, hot, hot. Their wings are out from the bodies a little and they are going through more water then usual. I guess we all need to adjust to the sun. (Especially after not seeing it for oh, what, 5 months!)

I have heard that fried Oreos are good. Good reason for me never to try one. I do not need fried food in my life and it would probably be so good, I would run right to the store to pick up a frydaddy, oreos and oil.

What is the recepie for inside out oreos? Not that I need more sugar, either, but I lost that battle long, long ago.

Just dropped the bicycle down to the shop to get spruced up for spring. Running is good, but biking is better!
(They have these new things called H E L M E T S F O R A D U L T S. Huh. Never had one, so bought one.)
Actually, I have been wearing my horseback riding helmet, but the riding helmet really is hot in the summer, not to mention that people seem to think it looks weird.

Hope someone is having a picnic. Not quite up to that level of organization myself.

My EE's lay hmm.. 3-4 times/week. When they feel like it. :P My OE maybe a bit less.

Girls aren't hot today, no panting or wings out but just had a neighbor drive in and tell me my leghorns were in the middle of the street. Urg!

We either have to move that coop further back on the property (which will be a MAJOR pita) or I may have to rehome those ladies to somewhere they can roam without heading into the street. They have 26 acres here, but they want to go 'thatta-way'.

DH wants to move this very (top) heavy coop up to my trailer hitch on my Jeep but I am not so sure that's a good idea. I have visions of it ripping something important out of the jeep and/or falling on his head. :)
