a blood ring means that the veins didn't develop, so the chick won't develop. Sorry

bummer. out of all the hatches I have done (5) I have never seen that.

Ok, time for some chicken math from the pros - If I have a 6'x8' snowmobile trailer to rebuild into a portable coop (not necessarily a tractor), do the raised poop board/roost, what is the max chicken number for said coop? Chickens would likely be coop-bound most the winter because we get some nasty wind up here, so the coop would be parked on the east side of the horse barn as a wind block. Thinking single slope roof, 7' down to 5'. Also, what size nest boxes has everyone found works for large fowl? Biggest would be Orps/Sussex, unless hubby wants a Jersey Giant. Smallest would be the Welsummers. I did have a 12-16 hole nest box at my grandpa's barn, but found today that my brother gave it away to the Amish.

Along with the hanging feeder and the chick feeders. But did get the spare stock tank today to go with the brooder light, get the chick feeders/waters tomorrow, then just add chicks!

12 chickens would be very comfortable in there. Nest boxes? Hmmm...Mine are about 12"X10"....2 of my hens it's a tight squeeze, but the rest fit fine....sometimes more than one hen. And don't think that just because you provide nest boxes that the hens will use them. I went down to lock up and my floor was littered with eggs. Seems someone was offended by others laying eggs in THEIR spot and rolled the eggs out. (one small crack, rest were fine)

Can you find out which Amish he gave them too and see if you can get your chicks from them? I mean, they did get your equipment for free.

When we made our "new" coop we put in 5 buckets (5 gal) for nesting boxes (they had a much larger space in our old coop) They refused to lay in there so I took them out and put in old dresser drawers and a milk bin turned on side. they tended to lay outside in a bag of leaves or behind the milk bin. Now I have broodys in the dresser drawers and I out the buckets in our other side and now they ONLY lay in the buckets (even the biggest orps and sussex) so .... If you are raising them from chick age then a bucket would work on its side or an old milk crate if you want to reuse items.

This is when we originally built it last July.

I banded some of my chicks (each of my neices and nephews picked one to be THEIRS, but it will live with me) One of the bands got VERY tight on their little leg....and I couldn't get it off with scissors....guess what worked very well? NIPPERS. Those wire cutters that look like they could nip off the end of a toe nail...those wire nippers....saved the chicks leg and nipped right through the plastic band...woohoo!!!

I know which Amish farmer has it, but I'm sure brother recieved many baked goods in return. Not sure if they hatch out any chicks though. They likely use all the eggs to feed the small army of children and for the baked good business. My neighbor Amish has several chickens/roos in a shed without windows or nest boxes. I now have two escaped roos living in the horse barn. The red one we named Roo, been around for over a week. Not sure of his breed with the missing tail feathers, figure a RIR or New Hampshire. The white one is the showed up this morning, think he is a Leghorn. A little shy, but ran right up when I called and tossed some bread out.

hmm...who needs more roos....where do you live again? If you are close to me I have chicks or Annie has chicks and I am pretty sure that Featherz has hens for sale.....

I'm sorry that the Amish wound up with your stuff.....But I would love to have Amish neighbors. Never have to worry about loud rock music at all hours of the day and night. LOL

No more Roos, thanks! The one was more than plenty, but now have 2 and wondering how long before we gain another. There are 2 BO roos and a feather legged roo with a very big, dominant RIR roo left in the shed with BO, white Leghorn, 1 Australorp, 1 Black Star and several red hens. I'm in Central NY, Cortland County, long way from Albany.

Second Broody sitting on a nest for over a week. I moved her to an isolation area, gave her food/water and eggs. Checked on her last night, on the roost. This morning, scratching around. Do most people find this happens when you move a broody?

I would say she may have wanted to be but isn't ready yet. A good broody will stick right down and not move around. Keep an eye on her to see if she spends the majority of the day and all night in the nest.
