NY chicken lover!!!!

Yesterday I scored an Eglu for $50! It is made by Omlet, a European brand, portable backyard coop/pen. Looks kinda like a fancy plastic doghouse with attached wire pen. Found the model online, for $295. Think it is a pretty good deal for me! Now I can get the big kids (aka Annie's 3 BB Orps and the Australorp, maybe the rapidly growing EE) out of the stock tank. This morning they were taking test flights from one end to the other, plowing over the little GLW and 4 Anconas in the process. And everyone is hitting a growth spurt, doubling feed/water intake.

I posted pics of the new babies in case anyone needed a silkie cuteness fix. They are 2 days old and moved into their brooder box this morning. Still hoping the last 4 eggs hatch.

Guys and gals, I'd like to present to you my first truly broody girl. She's sitting on five eggs I gave her Sunday night, after she slept in this nest box for two days running and refused to stay on the roost even after being turfed out. She's a dinky little thing for an Orpington, so I only gave her five. She has one of Trucker Chick's eggs, one from my Marans, and three random light brown ones that are probably from the BOs or the Dominiques.

Thus far she has been a dutiful mom - around midday she'll go out and have dinner and drinks in the run for a bit, but she's right back on duty shortly after. Occasionally, being a birdbrain, she has returned to the wrong box and settled down on whatever she found there, so I've had to put her back where she belongs a couple of times, but she now seems to be getting the hang of it and fixing the proper location in her little head. The eggs were definitely cold on both those occasions, but, after doing some reading on the forum, I've opted to leave them, as several BYCers have reported successful hatches even with goofy, directionally challenged broodies.

I thought about moving her to another room, but I've elected to let her stay where she likes it - assuming the eggs are developing, I'll just put up a temporary chick barrier when they're due to hatch so she can get out but they're stuck inside.

No out of the 4 dels I got from you last Nov(??) 3 were roos. the others are getting culled this weekend I hope. As long as I can get a table and a sharp knife together by then.

I think I will keep one though since they are dual purpose and I can use him to mate with all the hens so I get bigger birds. I think my reasoning is correct.

You know I kept 10 chicks and out of them I think 7 may be roos.

Not good odds.. I've got more eggs in the incu hoping for more pullets. I also have Del chicks coming this month from MO.

Now you are going to want to get some of my BR's from MO. Big roo and nice looking hens. Though the roo is NOT nice. But then that will make eating them that much easier of a decision.

You come, I give you eggs.
