NY chicken lover!!!!

Stony--thanks for the input. I am hoping she will be broody in the spring,

Rancher--I have rir and the roosters are quite tasty, especially if they are getting on your nerves! Going to eat one tonight for dinner. Now as far as the two boys I have left, they have proven their worth protecting the girls from the hawks and such. They arent real noisey and have learned to respect me after I caught them with the fishing net and pinned them down. They never have challenged my husband ever. They are big boys, but like I said, take care of the girls real well. I remind them every once in a while that their 5 brothers went to freezer camp for misbehaving and were quite tasty so they better watch their step! I am hoping to get some nice chicks come spring and maybe a good son or two for replacements. Girls are consistant layers for sure.

Hard day today. My fathers birthday (he would have been 69) and my parents anniversary today (would have been 50 years). Missing him terribly.

Totally understand. Just had my birthday recently and I was born on my dad's birthday. It was always *our* special day.

Thank you very much. I'll keep them in mind if I get meat chickens this year. But all this talk about zoning laws has me rethinking. The city of Cohoes was one of the first cities to allow BYC in city limits. They spell out what is allowed and what isn't. No roosters, no more than 9 chickens and they can not be free range. I have 6 hens now and they are confined to my entire yard which could be viewed as free range to someone. But they've never left my yard which has 6 ft high fencing and my dog keeping everyone safe. All of my neighbors get eggs for free whenever I see them and I've even given eggs to the fire department and code enforcement. Really I'm not trying to bribe anyone. I just like giving away my eggs and you can never have too many friends. I hoping that more people realize that BYC owners aren't trying to run a poultry farm and are just trying to be more self sustaining. Who knows maybe years from now we'll be viewed as being trend setters.

Anyway, thanks again and sorry for my verbal diarrhea.

Jay

If you get meaties, they mature faster, so maybe you can portion off a more secluded part of your yard, grow them out, harvest and have them in the freezer before your neighbor knows they were ever there!!

LOL!!! I'm hoping (especially in the spring) that all our extra eggs will go to the local food pantry. I hope they can accept them. We do sell them from a cooler in our driveway, but often have extras when people just don't stop. Not in it to make money... just help pay for the feed!

Welcome home, Rancher!

Food pantrys can accept them , but can't count them as part of what they are giving out....ours puts things like that on a table and tell folks they can take what they want from the table. Why can't they "give it out"? Well...the government has said that only Government inspected Grade A eggs can be considered "food" for the poor. (GIVE ME A BREAK...grrr)

So if your local food pantry has a fridge to keep them in, they might take them. You know who WILL accept them, no questions asked? Any local soup kitchen or "mission" (like the one on South Pearl street in Albany) Or a local woman's shelter.

Thanks, Chickprincess. It is nice to be home really. Even if it is cold.

Speaking of Cold ! it was cold today ...the water in the water bowls froze up . We saw some White stuff on the ground also this evening ..ICK

One quart is a very tiny bowl. I'd get the gallon ones. I got a bunch at walmart for $5 last summer on clearance, but around now they usually run around $20-$25, like this one:

The food pantry in wilton ALWAYS wants eggs, even lists them in RED on the website. Problem is they have very short drop off windows - I think it's like an hour saturday morning and an hour on wednesdays. You drop them off right before people come in to get their food so no spoilage problems.

They might not be part of the "regional food bank", which has a whole bunch of stupid rules they impose on member organizations. Our church food pantry did not join the regional food bank for decades, but now with demand being what it is for food, they joined to get some of the good parts of being a member. The people who run our little pantry still shake their heads and abide by the regional food bank's rules, but really and truely wonder what the harm is in giving out beef slaughtered and wrapped in butcher paper (not plastic like the supermarket), eggs from back yard flocks and goods baked by church members. We ALWAYS gave each food pantry reciepient a plate of cookies with their Christmas basket, a dozen colored eggs with their Easter basket and a loaf of pumpkin bread with their Thanksgiving basket. The Regional Food Bank does not allow those types of things to be given out, so the church food pantry organizer puts those items on a table near the exit door and says to everyone that comes to pick up their food "There is XYZ on the table by the door if you would like some". I can't explain why the regional food bank has their rules, but I do know they have some quirky ones. A Food Panty does not have to be a member of the Regional Food Bank. Many churches run food pantrys to serve their local area. Another reason I suspect that Wilton's food pantry isn't a member of the regional Food bank is because if you ARE a member you have to have a refridgerator devoted to only Food Pantry items as part of your inventory. (Another stupid rule, but there you have it)
