NY chicken lover!!!!

Good garden o' peas, I wish these chickens would kick in laying. I'm trying to save eggs to hatch but I also have so many customers who want eggs it's hard.

I've way to many hens not earning their keep. It's very disappointing. If it were for the Dels I'd really be up the creek. I don't know that some of the breeds I have will be staying next fall.

The lav orps are horrible, as are the Barred Rocks. I need utility AND good looks, but if I had my choice I'd take utility.

Of what I've got? Dels first, EE's and then the Birchens. These three lay the biggest and most eggs. We shall have to wait and see on the CR's since they just started to lay a few weeks ago.

Keep in mind we're talking winter layers here. I may try some Buckeyes or Chanteclers. I might go back to BO's too, though I haven't found them to be hardy.

Does anyone have Rosecomb RIR's.

Rancher--sorry to hear of your troubles. My oldest hens arent back to laying yet but my rir;s and red sexlinks are. I am getting about a dozen a day. Before winter, I was getting 2 dozen a day. Mine are from a hatchery in Jersey but they are pretty close to the standards. Not rosecomb though. I plan on hatching out some of their eggs come spring. If we were closer, I would give you some eggs or chicks.

Bought some clearance fruit for the cheeps today along with some greens. They were all over them. Almost lost my arms and hands! Supposed to get some freezing rain tomorrow, which will make it hard getting out to the coops on the snow.

Have a good evening!

The funny thing is I have a Sussex hen from Marq, and she brooded and stopped and started laying right away. Pretty good too. I may get some of those.

It really depends on the line I think. Some times to close of breeding is not good.

When I first got started I started out with hatchery and then got all snobby but I'm rethinking that idea. Mostly because I wouldn't need so many roosters on the place.

Now I was just commenting to TOB about how friendly my Dels are and that I had a RIR hen picked pretty badly in the other coop. Stuck her in with the Dels and she was fine. Feathers grew back real nice. She did however get out and run back to the original coop but she seems to be doing fine there.
I can pretty much stick anyone in with the Dels and they are fine with it. Mosty it's the newbie who gets out and runs right back to where they came from .

I've got two frizzles in with the Dels and an EE but they're fine. Frenchy is an original hatchery frizzle and she's been with the Dels from day one. Buckwheat her daughter has been in there since she was born.

I even stuck a young roo in there and everyone seems fine. Three roosters and no fighting. Though he wasn't too old at the time. Not yet crowing.

My only thing with the Dels is they don't go broody. Only one has in all the time I've had chickens and that was just once. I really wish I had some that did, but such is life.

I have buckeyes. I purchased a rooster this past fall that came from a laying line. the older girls haven't come back into lay yet, but I purchased a timer for lighting them.. HHHMMm maybe that is something I can do today as I am home with my son who had wisdom teeth removal.

Hello, One of the new Roosters I purchased is favoring one leg.
Cannot see anything wrong with the leg.

I do know that the 5 Silkies were in a small box. And they were
5 and 6 months old. Guess they did not get enough exercise?

Others seem ok. Is there something I could do??? Thanks Aria

I suggest you separate him and let him rest a bit. I could just be a bruise. Kinda like when I stubbed my toe on the crib, but then I doubt he woke up everyone in the coop swearing his head off.

No Aria I don't need Silkies. Broodies I got just not when I want them.

These people got Silkies and forgot their tin foil hats.

Rancher, I too am interested in Buckeyes and Chanticlers. Also more Speckled Sussex. Ginny, maybe When it gets warmer, and I have a broody I could get some Buckeye eggs from you. I think I would like a non white chanticler more than white...white ones would be beacons for hawks.

I still wish that the eggs could be separated by sex, but even the chicks keep that from me until they can't disguise themselves anymore. I do blame Mama for raising those two boys and not telling me.

Then you want partridge chanticlers. Sure, I could provide you with eggs. Is there a byc chicken party this year? Or do you get to Albany or Massachusetts?

I've added some lighting to the coop and egg production is a bit up. But my BA's just started laying. Oh my... they are the cutest little eggs I've seen! I keep telling them, "Ok, now you've got to pop them out bigger!". I have 6 or 7 little eggs in the fridge. I don't even want to crack them open!
Collecting the eggs today, someone left me a HUGE present... a 3.6 oz egg! Broke my record of 3.5. Poor girl!
