NY chicken lover!!!!

One of the TSC employees solved her hawk problem by feeding the local crows, away from her coop. She hasn't lost a chicken to a hawk in 2 years. (I didn't ask her about other predators)
I am thinking of putting out a bird feeder on the opposite side of my property from my garden and coop and try and draw some crows in. Fill it with cracked corn instead of birdseed so only the large birds are attracted to it.
I don't know. I have lots of crows daily and a few ravens even. And I still have hawks and the rare hawk attack.
The crows and the ravens feed right along side the chickens.

I don't have ducklings now but when I do I feed them Game bird chick starter. It is non medicated. I have never supplimented any vitamins ever.

Lynzi, I fed mine grower crumbles when they were small and switched to layer pellets when they got bigger to cut down on waste. They grew so fast you could see them get bigger day by day. No problems except the male grew so fast he had trouble walking for a short time (muscovey). They also started getting some treats like romaine lettuce, peas, a little bread, leftover pasta, and anything else suitable when they were old enough.

Thanks!! I look for that next time I'm out.

I'm off to the barn to feed horses then to the coop to feed chickens. Unfortunately everyone has to stay locked up today because we won't be home. My husbands gramma isn't expected to make it through the day so we will be over there with her. She has been battling cancer for 2 years and she said she is done fighting

It's gonna be a rough few days. I'm just glad she won't have to suffer much longer.
mder, I am sorry to hear of your hard times. I hope these times pass with out to much difficulty.

Hi All!
Trapped a mink 4 weeks ago after it killed my one and only rooster, Henry. (beautiful lavender ameraucana from mugsmagee)
Hen sitting on eggs and crossing fingers that they hatch. Awfully cold out there. She started with 12 eggs and has kicked
out six so far. We will know for sure in one week. BTW...minks smell awful!

I am sorry about your roo. I have eggs in the bator and the Roo is a lav from her, if you'd like to replace him. Not sure what colors there will be but I did get a blue/lav hen once. She lays nice blue eggs.

Again sorry for your loss,

Rancher

Eggs are due to hatch around the third of april. If you want chicks. Just say "remember when you offered me chicks?" I know I'll forget.

I am sorry for this news and can sympathize. Lost my mother quite a few years back.

I don't know that crows can prevent hawk attacks entirely, but they sure make a lot of noise and are kind of an early warning system here. The hawks cruise over the valley and would be out of sight to my flock because of the trees, but the crows see them and start in with their noise.

I don't what is about the hawks that the crows don't like but I stepped outside last week and heard a lot of squawking coming from up above and as I looked up I saw a crow going after a hawk as they were both flying above my house. That crow would not give it up, I don't know what he was upset over but he definitely made his point! I've also been seeing a lot of turkey vultures flying around as of late. But they're more of a scavenger so I don't think I have to worry too much about them attacking my birds.

In short.

book i got from the library. "handy farm devices and how to make them".-- Cobleigh

Scare away crows and hawks.

for keeping hawks and crows away from the poutlry yards, get a few bright tin shingles, line them together with wire and hang upon an arm extending from the top of a high pole, where sun and wind strike fairly. The jingle and glitter is sufficient to keep these pest at a safe distance. You will find them useful in the corn and melon fields where crows can be troublesome.

have a safe day,

Rancher
