NY chicken lover!!!!

yes TOB. Mothers is needed. Although I know people who use the stuff without mothers and seem to do ok. Buried somewhere in this thread is a "recipe" for making your own AVC with mothers.

Rancher, I don't drink either. Not in a long time. Drinking killed most, heck all of the men on my bio fathers side of the family. But funny is funny

We do what Stony does. We have had chickens for a few years but we had Call Ducks for 15 years. They need food water and all that Stony says and they are fine with us. I will say Chickens are much easier for us. DUCKS are too MESSY.

Thanks for the guidance, folks.

Hi! Short story: I am looking to buy two coturnix quail hens from someone in the Saratoga area (I live in Schuylerville) and at the same time would like to find a new home for my male coturnix quail. I will pay a more than fair price for the hens (they don't have to be super young, just proven to be female) and trade in my male for free to anyone who wants him (he's actually a very pretty silver color).

Long story:
I have had my first two coturnix quails since last fall (before that I had buttons) and they live in the aviary in my dining room. I was hoping for three hens and wound up buying three young unsexed quails from a swap meet at the Washinton County Fairgrounds. One died the next day for no apparant reason and the other two wound up being a male and female. The ratio is completely off (I know it's supposed to be 4-5 hens per cock) and my sweet girl has taken a beating. I have the male quaranteed inside the aviary, but I need to find a new home for him and get two female friends for her...I can't comfortably fit more than three quails. I hope someone nearby is able to help!

Thank you so much! :)

Thx for the reply, Stony. I'm kind of catching on to some of these points.

Safety and health threats can really drive you batty. I am very familiar with my dogs' and horse's appearance, and check them over for potential issues, so I'm sure this will be necessary with my birds, hence your "monitor" comment.

Hi ChickPrincess,

Do you worm your flock on a routine basis, or is this something you do after symptoms appear? Thx.

This is only the second time I have treated my flock for parasites. I have not decided if I will do this on a regular basis, but probably not. I treated last fall for roundworms. I could easily see huge, long worms (6" +) in their poop. I treated with Wazine 17. I recently discovered lice on their vents. I think their recent feather loss must be due to lice, and not mating, like I originally suspected. I have to treat them again next Saturday and then be done. This time I used Eprinex, which should treat both external AND internal parasites.
hello I'm an hour south of Buffalo NY in Forestville. I love that video of the two chicks dust bathing right above me. I'm gonna have to get give mine some dirt when I get some. Atm trying to find supplys to build a coop.
Welcome!

you will get worms anytime you worm anything. Even yourself. We all carry a healthy balance of worms. The "treatment" kills the worms, then it just all starts over again. A healthy balance of worms is unavoidable period. If it is living, it has worms.

Wood ash to dust bath in. No bugs. It works. All natural, costs nothing, healthy and did I mention it works?
