NY chicken lover!!!!

Heading out to Rochester tomorrow. Its where there is an in plan pediatric dentist. I figured to visit my brother and the strong museum while out there.
The other day I saw a raptor flying above our farm that I'm trying to figure out what kind it was. It had a dark belly and was white at the wingtips. Anyone have any ideas? I was thinking maybe the dark phase of the broad-winged hawk, but they migrate.

Broad-winged is my best guess. Maybe there's already a migratory push. It's possible.

I was told that the Coopers hawk that took my hen might be migrating. I didn't know they migrated. Though I've never had an attack before either.

Red tails seem to be a permanent bird here though right?

As for the ACV, I have read in the Practical Poultry magazine that it's not something you want to put in the water on a regular (every day ) basis. It may turn the birds off from drinking the water.

Keeping in mind there are differences of opinions on the matter. Which is why I haven't commented on it til now.

As always to each his/her own.

Hey guys, I just finished setting up my incubator and have it plugged in now. How long should I wait before putting eggs in? I mean obviously when it's at the right temperature, humidity etc. but do you generally have a rule of thumb on how long to monitor it for?

Tab's have you had chicks shipped? I was wondering how the Rome PO is with chicks. I have 2 batches shipping on the 8th from different locations. How long in advance should I call them. I really do not want to go with the kids to pick up a box of little corpses. Also if this weather keeps up I might have to add a heat pack. 80 deg last year right now go figure. Got to love NY weather.
No I have never had chicks shipped. I have had eggs shipped, but I've had them sent to my grandma's PO Box in Westmoreland because we actually live closer to that post office. I've called the post office after buying the eggs because they ship within a few days. With our weather it could possibly change and be warmer by the 8th you never know. Sorry I didn't have much advice about shipping chicks. We usaually hatch our own.

I usually have it run half to full day so I can check to make sure it is maintaining a consistent temperature.

I would wait 24 hours, but in our Brinsea's I have put eggs in before I even turned it on.

Depends on how much of a rush I am in. They seem to stick right on temp so I will check again in a few hours after the eggs have had time to get up to temperature.

Thanks! I'm thinking I'll set them tomorrow night depending on how things are going. The eggs I'm planning on hatching have been sitting in temperatures between 65-70 degrees, I've read that this can cause low hatching rates, should I be worried?

Sorry for all the questions. I should be writing a 15 page paper right now for one of my classes but instead I'm doing a lot of research and getting ready to set eggs. Oppps

On the subject of fishing line, I haven't used it in the coop, but did make a spider web of it over MU garden one year. I had to plant the corn 3 times because the crows would wait for it to sprout then eat the kernel off. They left it alone after I made the invisible web, but the next morning at 4:30 am they were stomping around in the back yard under my window voicing their displeasure.
Sounds good! I may make a combo out of making waist high "tables" out of wooden stakes with chicken wire as the top part and using fishing line in a web pattern. I have quite a large area to cover and this would make the most sense. Glad it worked for you. Thanks for letting me know.
Yeah, you'd better hide! I resemble that!

I used to check for 12 hours or so, but my incubator is pretty consistent.

Chicks in the house are growing quickly and smelling! Even with changing the litter daily, there's smell. Wish it would warm up quick so I can get them into the garage!

Flock is out today. Wish me luck that the hawk doesn't show up again!

Happy sun shiny day!

Nope. You shouldn't be worried, that is exactly the right temp to store hatching eggs....the trick, as I am told, is to turn them each day while waiting for enough to collect to set. Oops on my part, I didn't do that last time, but still had a 50% hatch rate....I only collected for 4 days however not a full week.

What you should be worried about is getting that paper done so you can go out and have some fun.

Ok, I thought I read somewhere that they should be in a cool, damp place but I have only been collecting them since Tuesday.

I know I know haha I thought this going back to school thing wouldn't be too difficult but between work and the animals it's getting a little draining. Oh well...hopefully come December I'll have my masters
