NY chicken lover!!!!

Is anyone else having a hard time selling eggs??? The last week and a half, I swear, I have sold about 3 dozen total. Are people not buying because of the weather?

coming up on easter retailers run sales on eggs as a loss leader, you may have regulars that can't resist a bargain.

Afternoon all! Been working like a crazed woman these last few days so I have only had time to quick read and mark my spots. Love that some of you have been playing along with me.

The cheeps are not happy that the snow has been here and that chicken momma has been so busy. I have just enough time to let them out or lock them up and make sure their feed and water is full. I am hoping that it is nice tomorrow so I can let them out and spend some time with them. Lord knows I need some chicken therapy. All work and no play make for a crabby chicken momma!

My eggs are still perking along and I will candle the heritage ones tonight to see how they are doing. Somehow my broody silkie girls ended up with two more eggs under them so now they are trying to hatch 4. I guess I will be candling them as well tonight to see whats going on there. Have to clean out the dog crate and get it ready for the newbies when they hatch.

I have been moving lots of eggs lately which is good because production is going up so my fridge gets a little full before I get requests for more eggs. I can never quit my job because most of my customers are from there. At least the cheeps are paying for their own food and upkeep so I cant complain.

Hoping the snow they are calling for tomorrow night misses us. I really need spring to come!

Argh! My little araucana Princess is broody again. She's too cute but she lays like four eggs then goes broody.. always in the favorite nest box. And she's so little she can only hold a few eggs.. Silly girl - and I need her blue eggs too. This is her last year sitting on chicks waaay too big for her. :)

I was just wondering who would like to make a swap later this summer. I have a group of 15 SR BLRW's coming on the 8th form Nava and would like a nice roo that is not so closely related. I will do the driving as long as it is in state. I know this is early but I like to have some idea of what is going on.

I have more customers than I have eggs. I have been trying to get ahead on my own "keeping" eggs because I do Easter brunch with a bunch of quiche and of course, just traditional hard boiled eggs and I sold

all my eggs. But they have been laying terrifically so I will be able to make my quiche this week!!

Hey guys, I just finished setting up my incubator and have it plugged in now. How long should I wait before putting eggs in? I mean obviously when it's at the right temperature, humidity etc. but do you generally have a rule of thumb on how long to monitor it for?

My brinsea seems very accurate, so I don't let it run before hand but the little Giant I let run for a full day to adjust as needed.

Went outside for a bit today to feed and water all the animals. Checked the nestboxes as usual, nothing from the silkies still but there were 3 big brown eggs in the orp's coop!! Hubby is going to be happy, he started making comments the other day when we were out of eggs - wondering when MY chickens were going to start laying again! LOL

Question regarding my silkie hen (Pearl, the white one I got from Tab) and roo ( the one I got from Adora), if I continue to hatch eggs from Pearl, will I most likely continue to get the same color I got with this last hatch? Will the chicks ever be different? I'll post pics of the chicks once I get pictures uploaded to my PC. I'm just trying to decide to if I should continue to hatch from that pairing or of I should add another color hen to the flock.

I like to give new customers paper work (copied at the UPS store) on the nutritious value of pasture fed chicken eggs. However it's hard to compete with the stores who sell eggs for $1 doz.

You are so right!! Fortuanalty, I work in an area that people will spend $4 a dozen. I feed orgaic grains and sprout and feed fermented feeds. At the local health food stores a half dozen of "heritage" eggs will go for $4 a half dozen. Buckeyes are a heritage breed!

By the way, they are incubating nicely!! With the delayed shipping I thought they wouldn't be developing as well. I also am incubating my own buckeyes as well in the little giant! They do appear to be developing as well. i may have some buckeyes to sell!!! (or eat)!!!!

Oh definately add another color and remember that it is best to add chickens in twos, so the new one doesn't get picked on. (am I an enabler or what? LOL)

Here are some from the other day, Pearl and Duncan are making quite the pair! I plan to keep the "middle child" of my chicks that hatched in December. Hoping it turns out to be a hen!

This is the Chick I plan to keep...

Pearl and her babies...they all looked Partridge in color when they first hatched but now they're this black speckled white
