Finally a chick has hatched!! Today is day 24! I have had 3 pip then die. There are no pips right now but some are peeping and rocking

I don't know what they were waiting for! I still have 33 eggs to go!

whoo HOO!!! Come on chickies. Now that one has hatched it's peeping might get the rest moving toward hatching.

I don't want another roo but I have a nice white hen you could have to make him happy! ;-)

No, I want a silkie hen. Hawk thought mine was really tasty and the local songbirds are using the feathers from the lawn to feather their nests. Literally.

This mean lady wouldn't let me see whats under her. Luckily I was wearing a coat when she bit at my arm! I told her fine keep them! I'm sure she don't have many eggs under her since this nesting box rarely gets used. Whatever makes her happy I guess!

That's why I own a "headlight". I put it on and go down after dark to check on mean broodies. I rarely get pecked at night. I DO wear gloves, however. I really hate chick bites.

What kind hatched, do you know? This is good news, and as Cass said, maybe the peeping will give the others some good encouragement to come on out!

Life cycle of a "bird" is part of NY State curriculum. They must fulfill that part some other way. Pictures? Film strip? Does your son go to a public school? Private schools might do things differently.

I have a daughter in 9th grade and she has never done it, unless they did it in 7th grade she skipped that completely They go to public school. I'm gonna have to question the kiddos tonight and see what they know about it.

The sad part is she's not broody! lol she got off the eggs a couple hours later. I was surprised to find 4 eggs in there.

Okay--welcome to all the newbies.

it was nice having vinyl flooring as everything came up easily with a flat spade.

I have not seen a tick since we got chickens. We only have an acre and I think everything that could be eaten has been eaten but they keep finding more. My neighbors are happy to have them come over on their lawn as they have been pulling ticks off their dogs and themselves. 41 chickens makes it hard for anything to survive on my real estate!!

Mine are about 5 weeks ...& are pure white ..I am suspecting they maybe white leghorns ..
Or do they do their last color change with their last growth spirt ?

If you don't know the genders, you might be happy to have five. I had a pair of pekin ducklings once that I picked up when I was left with one lone drake, hoping against hope that both were girls or both were boys. No dice. I had an even pair and that poor girl was so sexually harassed until I picked up some more females. The last thing you want is more males than females, ugh. If you had kept three, you might have ended up with my problem. Plus, who can resist cute little ducklings? And five are as easy to care for as three

Don't mind me, I have morefowl disease and I try to spread it to everyone.

I love the five but they are MESSY!!!!! These ducklings are ten times messier than the chicks were!
When I took away the three Pekins I tried to leave myself an... assortment. I went by "butt shape" and have no idea if this will have any bearing on gender. I had hamsters when I was like 8 years old, and you could tell gender (with pretty good accuracy) on the youngsters who hadn't grown the telltale signs yet by butt shape. I don't know what I believe the butt shape means on ducklings... but I made sure to keep not-all-the-same. Hopefully that works out well.
For the two added "brown" ducklings I believe I have a Swedish and a Rouen.
Anyway, my mission today is to figure out a nice safe clean way to keep these duckling babies while they are in the brooder. I had been keeping them on sand (I did for the chicks). Last night, while I was at work they splished and splashed their water to the point that all the sand was mud. Wet mud. All of them were muddy, one was so coated in mud that I had to wash her off. I then used a hair dryer on all of them because they were cold and wet. They are currently on a puppy pee pad. They were eating wood shavings before. I don't know what to do! I researched chickens for a long time before I got mine. My husband got the ducklings as almost an "impulse buy" and I love them... but this is making me crazy! I want to go to bed when I get home from work, not spend hours nursing muddy ducklings.

I'm not really sure what breed. I think it is one of my Barred Rocks eggs because of the color. The chick is black and the daddy would either be a leghorn a rir or a del.
