Rosemary essential oil works nicely to keep bugs away. You should be able to find it at Wegman's in the natural section. Just add several drops to any lotion.Oooh! Good to know! I am going to try that. My Grandmother bought cracker barrel out of that Gardeners Hands mint hand lotion and soap, it smells very nice.
Oh, my! That's cute!
So sad. Sorry you lost your sweetie.RIP my little Beatrice. She had been living in a crate in my den for awhile, she hadn't been well and really I should have put her down long ago...luckily she passed away in her sleep last night before I had to make the decision. She was my favorite though she was always cuddly and would follow me around the yard![]()

We had one of these on our chicken deck yesterday! We had no idea what it was but my daughter snapped a pic with her cell phone. It was hanging around the poop. What's the deal with them?POOP ALERT ...A Nessus Sphinx Moth in the run today ..Hope you can see it

My neighbor is so sweet. I've been free ranging them late in the afternoon and she will text me when she drives by going home that some of them have escaped. Their new favorite place is in the drainage ditch next to the road. Stinkers.Haha sometimes I find my hens louder than the roo's. I will be going to work sometimes at 5:30am and the hens are being so obnoxious that you would think they are being attacked...ugh good thing we don't have any neighbors (well neighbors that care). We only have one neighbor close to us and we just give them a dozen eggs a week and that keeps them happy. I couldn't imagine living in the city...
I have 6 tires that I used last year for planters. The flock has taken them over as dust baths.Ah ok. A hacksaw should work, not sure about a jigsaw blades kind of skinny and tire jiggling might bend them.
I like that potato idea there cooped. Imay try that depending on how many tires my wife uses.
Wish I could find some big tractor tires around me for free. Kids want a sand box and I want some bigger planters.

Cass do you know when gramma chick is coming to pick up your chicks, i believe she had expressed an interest in the eggs that i offered also and if she is traveling here in the future to shop and pickup chicks, i could set some eggs aside for her too. I might be in error about her wanting some eggs, i don't have time to go back in the thread and check. They don't turn then on weekends. And with setting eggs on Wednesday they would only have to go in 2 weekends....one teacher each of 4 days, once even would be better than nunce....and it was 4 teachers at each school doing the hatching. I am upset. (can't say ****** off, software stars it out) I am NOT going to volunteer eggs for next year, that's for sure OR if I do? I'm going to charge them $5 a dozen for them.
I have 16 - 18 chicks. How many did you think you wanted? I am going to get some eggs from Bpapa for myself and keep one or two of the Sumantras to try and get a roo again. I don't need a single one of these chicks. And my brother already backed out on his wanting some. So they are yours for the asking. Besides, you were going to go shopping too....can't deprive you of that trip. LOL
Yes, we found his body. Hawk. That hawk is gonna meet up with a fitting end. Shhhh SSS
Quote: He must have had a amorous look on his face ..LOL
No I thought it was a humming bird moth at first ..But when I searched it on google ..I saw some one else had identified it as the Nessus .
It was pretty cool ..it wings fluttered very fast ..
Onions and asparagus is in the garden. Let it rain. Fresh compost from the town is very very dry and my shoulder hurts to much to drag the hose that far.
Went to Lowes twice today. The second trip I slipped off the curb and fell under the truck. Ray started the truck and man, was I scared he was going to run over me with the front tire. So, now, not only do I have a bruise from impact with the curb but scrapes from scrambling to get out from under the side of the truck.
My chickens have been out parading in the rain. Silly birds.
The new chicks are half the size of the week old chicks. I knew they grew fast, but wow, doubling in size in one week?
Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there.
Ok.... So I'm Strongly considering hosting the Picnic this year for maybe the end of June( if that would be enough time for others to prep) but I have some concerns I wanted to address.
First off I think I remember reading that people bring birds/ animals to the picnic, what are the risks to my flock of having strange birds and flock shoes/boots on my property?? Another question is what beyond providing a location and a potty is my responsibility as a hostess?? If I do commit I wanna make sure my birds aren't put at risk and I wanna make sure I do my part in making it Great!?! Any input and or feedback would be Greatly Appreciated!?!?
I have considered the potato thing, but believe that lead can leach into the soil. or some other toxic thing. I've not researched it though. I'm sure many of these tires are old. Lord only knows what other bad things are in the dump. There is a lot of broke jars and rusted stuff in there too. The house was built in 1959. The best I can hope for is to just cover it over and plant non edible plants.
Nook nook, I agree with featherz. the rules are what you determine. Cass runs the chinese auction and I think there was enough money for a porta potty. People do like to bring birds for sale, but if you say no birds, then no birds it is. Or as featherz said disinfecting is a must if anyone goes to see your birds, or you can say going near your birds is off limits due to biosecurity reasons. Biosecurity, is the only thing that would concern me if I hosted. Any way it is really up to you.The rules are whatever you set, it's your house! =) So if you want no animals then no animals it is.I've only been to two, but I know in the past the hostess has set aside a special place for crated animals for swaps/auction (like in the garage or somewhere away from the chicken coops) and that the hostess birds were of course penned up so people didn't go traipsing around.
I don't know your layout, but if I were hosting (not a good set up for that here), I'd probably do something like that and I wouldn't let any people past my electronic netting border unless they wanted to spray up with some oxine.
fwiw, I'd love having someone (like you) kinda local for me host - I couldn't go last year since it was so far away.![]()
