NY chicken lover!!!!

Ok.... So I'm Strongly considering hosting the Picnic this year for maybe the end of June( if that would be enough time for others to prep) but I have some concerns I wanted to address.

First off I think I remember reading that people bring birds/ animals to the picnic, what are the risks to my flock of having strange birds and flock shoes/boots on my property?? Another question is what beyond providing a location and a potty is my responsibility as a hostess?? If I do commit I wanna make sure my birds aren't put at risk and I wanna make sure I do my part in making it Great!?! Any input and or feedback would be Greatly Appreciated!?!?

End of June would be wonderful. All of us with chicks might be able to sex them by then, if you allow caged birds to come. You set the rules.

A grill would be nice so we can grill things. Access to an oven to reheat anything that should be hot when served would allow a greater variety of foods. Alternatively a lead cord to plug crock pots into works. You tell us what facilities you have available and we bring things that work within your facilities. No grill? We cook the chicken at home and it is served cold. My favorite way to eat chicken is cold, actually. No outlets? We bring cold salads and chips. We're flexible that way. If I ever figure out a way to host on my land there will be no power, but lots of grill space. Just the way I am set up. Everyone is different and we respect that.

Now bio-security is another matter. Some people are fanatic about it. Some are not. Everyone jump in here, but it is my understanding that most things that kill chickens are airborne and not transmitted by humans or are transmitted from chicken to chicken directly. There is one thing that is in ALL soil (So people say) that can come into a flock on people's shoes, I would imagine, BUT most people wear one pair of shoes into their chicken's area and don't wear that pair of shoes into their house or car. I know I don't wear my chicken shoes or boots anywhere but in my chicken coop. If you were to host I would respect your concerns about bio-security and make sure I wear shoes that never go in the coop. (I am thinking my favorite sandals, cuz I love them and there is no way they go near chicken poo) If people choose to walk near your chickens to see your layout they would be tracking your germs back to their own flock, not the other way around. I strongly agree with all animals brought on to another's property need to be properly crated and it has nothing to do with bio-security. It has to do with the security of the animal brought to the event....imagine a chicken getting loose and how scared that bird would be. (giggle. Anyone remember that? )

Afternoon all. Had a lovely day out with the family. Lots of sunshine but a chilly wind. At least it dried up the grass enough to be cut.

Stony--another one down and only a few thousand more!

I googled averille park and its only about an hour and 15 from me. Two hours drive is about my limit for a get together. Would love to go to one though. I have no room on my acre for parking or hosting. However, I am willing to cook and bake.

Loading everyone up as this week is my crazy week at work. I will be there more than I am here. I will have just enough time on tuesday to do some coop maintanance but thats it.

I hope everyone had a good day today!

That's normal - my adults do it as well. I never bothered with wetting the food - I just give them the dry food and plenty of water, and they're fine. I adore duckehs - that said, they can be nasty, filthy little monsters.

The troops are out running around today. The duckehs like their makeshift pond a lot (crummy cell phone photo - I was too lazy to get the big camera out). The Khaki Campbells are enormous already - they're not even four months old, and are fully as large as my Production Rouens (which are admittedly pretty dinky birds). Judging by their calls when I moved them, I have five KC hens and a drake (hens quack, drakes sort of hiss and whisper).

I like your set up. Very nice.

When we were at Tabs and Travis's I never really thought about it. I wear boots to the chicken area at home, but their place was clean so I didn't worry. I have been some places where it wasn't.

If you plan to bring something back , just have your quarantine place set up in advance. Or just don't go into their coop area.

We brought ice and everyone can bring coolers like they're going on a picnic. It is after all a picnic. We brought a fold out table and our own chairs. I say if you don't have a lot of money for a summer vacation this is the ideal opportunity.

Or don't wear your picnic shoes into your coop area. It's really just that simple. The only people who will have a problem are those who only have one pair of shoes to their name. If that is the case, let me know your size and I will pick up a pair of flip flops for you to wear at the picnic so you don't have to worry about bio-security in either direction. (I never assume that we are all of equal economic status because it just isn't the case in any group of people)

Yes, Ice and ice chests for the food you brought, chair(s) for your group to sit in, any folding table that fits in your car are all appreciated. The first year I brought an ice chest full of ice for drinks. I can do so again if someone is bringing community drinks....but last year pretty much everyone brought their own fav drink.

People who had a shorter distance to travel to the picnic usually brought the cold or hot food. Those who were traveling a long distance usually brought paper products, rolls, chips and/or plastic cups and eating utensils. But just because that is what has been done in the past doesn't mean it has to be done in the future.

My drive a few years ago to get the ivermectin from you was pleasant. AQHA is not far from me(though I am not sure exactly where). It would be good to see you again!!
