NY chicken lover!!!!

Gramma...I am amassing lots of photo's. Just don't have the energy to post them by the time I get done with everything I have to do here at 10:30 at night or later! Plus, last time I had trouble; not sure why. I wonder if there's an easier way to post pics. How do you do that here on BYC? I usually upload to another file and then copy the image. But last time, it didn't work. I remember someone said there was an easier way...

TOB
I have difficulty posting pictures as well, but it takes my son about 90 seconds to do it.......Most of my problem is I resist technology........and can't retain how he does it.....(or maybe my brain is full and can't take in more instruction.......

edited to say, that Stoney, the little photo box works well enough, but I can never figure out how to import them from my computer...AAUUGGHH!! I suppose If I did it more often I would retain the ability to do it.....

ROFL! That video is great. sent it to DH to say "see hon? Could be worse!!"..

I used to free range my birds over my 26 forested acres, but the losses got to be too great and they mainly stayed in the cleared areas anyways. I can't bring myself to shoot an animal and even if I could, I'd probably be a crap shot. I doubt DH would kill an animal unless it was about to eat him - he can't even put down a sick chicken for me. Add that to the fact that I am not home enough to catch any daytime predators and I'm sleeping for the nighttime ones.

So I compromised and spend mega bux on electric netting - and now the entire somewhat clear back fields are available to the chickens during the day. Still can get eaten by hawks, but I do have shelter areas and roosters so it helps some. My large penned up runs are left open and are only used in situations where I need to keep them penned (snowstorms, yard cleanups, whatever). So I think they do ok. :) They are all locked up at night with combination padlocks - even a coon can't figure that one out (I hope).
I have come to the same conclusion. I just bought $500 more of the electric poultry netting. Yup! I am nuts, but I do want the birds out doing what they do and I do NOT want them in the neighbor's yard. Love the stuff though......

Well the chickens are still in the tenants flowers ...Driving me Nuts !
It is mostly the older hens ..that we were given..that are the troublemakers ..
It is funny my Roo knows they are bad ...he saw them 1st ..& made a sound that alerted me ..
Im getting tired of chasing them ..I sprayed them with a hose ..today till they left her yard
This was after her dust mop dog chased them all over the place .
When I came home from work my husband says Sally lost her Dog ..
Im like What ? It was over here chasing the chickens ...& now she cant find it ..SO ?
WELL we couldnt find the chickens either ..
So I am mad at her ...She asks me Did you find your chickens ? I said no ..she didnt apologize For her dog scaring the crap out of them ..
I ve apologized for them scratching everywhere ...Even though she put up the Targets / Bullseyes for them
idunno.gif

I asked my husband is there something non lethal I can shoot at that dog ...
Next time it comes over I think I am going to soak it with the hose ....
Would some type of fencing solve the problem?? Keep your chickens in & her dog out ??

Hi,

I have two hens in Syracuse, NY, Got conflicted answers from the code department, one said 3 hens, no roosters, the second said no chickens,at all. Would love to know what the correct answer is?

Does anyone know anything concrete?

Thanks!

Morning all. Just popped in before leaving for work to see what everyone was up to. I found 8 eggs in the corner of the big coop behind the roost this morning. First time that has happened. I will have to check there daily I guess.

Dh saw a fisher in the road last night. Tried to run it over but it was too fast. Must be living down in the swamp. Means the game cam stays out and hopefully it doesnt come by for dinner.

Supposed to be nice tomorrow so hopefully I can get some coop cleaning done. Also want to try to introduce the tots to the divas in hopes they will accept them into the coop. I dont think there will be a problem with the silkies but the big girls are another story. The tots will be 8 weeks old on the 26 so it would be nice to get them out of my basement. We shall see.

Off to the pharm.

Do you brood them inside? I swear I am going to start a business of brooding chicks inside for all the people who say they hate it. I absolutely LOVED it! I love all the little sounds they make, and holding them. I can hardly wait for the next time I have a batch of chicks to brood.
Chickens, not ducklings.
Ducklings smell like farts and are messy. Their cuteness increases a GREAT deal when they go outside.
I don't mind brooding inside but once the chicks get to that "inbetween" stage of almost being fully feathered but not quite enough to go outside (if it's cold out) I tend to get impatient because they are making a bigger mess at that point. The ducklings?!? Oh my are they messy indeed!! I cannot wait to get them out of my laundry room. As a matter of fact, if I can get this duck house finished this weekend, I may put them outside and hook up the heat lamp inside of their house. Not only are they messy but they are LOUD!

My birds are in the coop and run most of the time. We only allow them out when we're going to be around, mostly because of the neighbor dogs and kids, potential predators that can't be dealt with very easily. Also, we don't want them getting onto other people's property, as it's our choice to keep them, not theirs, and other folks shouldn't have to deal with them eating their plants and scratching up their gardens. Other people's mileage may vary, of course, but it's what works for us.

I have seen posts on BYC (not in this section, but elsewhere) that imply if not outright state that keeping chickens in runs is cruel, and that no one who can't or won't free-range constantly should be keeping them. As far as I'm concerned, that's utterly ludicrous. My birds are hardly abused by being in a large run instead of free-ranging in the yard, and anyone who believes otherwise can feel free to stick it.

There - off MY soapbox.
I also prefer to keep my birds alive. What's the point of having them if they are just plucked away by predators & killed? Aren't we responsible for their lives?
I cannot shoot or spend the time waiting outside for something to come along. I have had chickens since the mid 90's. My first flock, out of ignorance, was let to free range. Eventually by the end of summer, I had no birds left. I can't afford to buy birds, to feed the local fox & raccoon population. This is my opinion, one can agree or not.

If one does free range, that is great. I cannot.

Everyone has their way of doing things. We can take from peoples posts, and use it or not. I prefer to fence in my coop areas. All adults have outside areas. Some have grass, some do not.
I try to rotate them to the grassy areas weekly. It works for me.

I'm really not sure how this spiraled into a free range or not debate. I know I personally really don't care how any one chooses to raise THEIR birds. It is their choice. What I do care about is being told, and I quoted it earlier and will paraphrase now, that I don't take individual lives seriously and that loss of life doesn't bother me.

With that said, as I always say, I report what works for me and has worked for me. Not what I read. You are reporting what works for you as do most others. This gives newbies to chickens options from real life experiences and ways to raise their birds. Heck I started out with 7 cooped and penned birds. I was PETRIFIED to let them out and freerange. I evolved.
